Two independent opticians in Salford have merged their practices to safeguard the future of independent business in the town, giving back to a charity close to their hearts in the process.

Eyeline Opticians and Alan Miller Opticians have joined forces and will now trade from the former’s site on Fitzgerald Way.

Upon moving into the new premises, it was discovered that they had an excess of PPE and as a result have decided to donate this to a local charity that will be able to make better use of them.

The donations have been delivered to Humphrey Booth Day Centre, a charity located on Eccles Old Road. The charity provides a plethora of services to those in need, particularly the elderly, including general care, coffee mornings, entertainment and themed nights, and even assist with housing.

The charity means a great deal to both practices as many of them have personally witnessed the incredible work that they do. Upon receiving the donations, Humphrey Booth thanked the local Optical team.

Much like Humphrey Booth, caring for the community is very much a core value for the two practices. With just a few hundred metres separating the two practices, the merger will allow patients to receive an advanced level of eyecare from just a short distance away.

Patients from Alan Miller Opticians will also be able to take advantage of an extended frame selection at Eyeline Opticians. All patient records from Alan Miller Opticians, including contact lens details and supply, have been safely and confidentially transferred to the new premises at Eyeline Opticians.

In addition, familiar faces from Alan Miller Opticians, including Karen and Elaine, have joined the Eyeline Opticians team.

Plans for a new community in Worsley, Salford that will lead the way in sustainable living, provide much-needed affordable homes and create jobs have launched today.

Peel L&P and its homebuilder Northstone is inviting residents to have their say on the masterplan and first phase proposals for the ‘East of Boothstown’ site off Leigh Road, on the edge of Worsley and next to the RHS Garden Bridgewater.

The plans relate to a site earmarked for housing in Greater Manchester’s ‘Places for Everyone’ plan, which sets out how each borough should be developed to meet local need for new homes, jobs and sustainable growth.

Up to 350 new energy efficient homes, mainly for families, are planned for the site with around 70 in phase one delivered by Northstone and to be known as Alder Carr.

The consultation includes providing around 50% affordable housing overall, with 20% available at the East of Boothstown site and 30% off-site through a proposed contribution towards more affordable homes across Salford.

Improvements to local junctions are also intended to be made to ease traffic in the area and there will be a new pedestrian crossing over Leigh Road.

The plans will set a new standard for sustainable and environmentally conscious new homes and will feature energy saving technology to help residents keep running costs low. The neighbourhood will also benefit from a network of open spaces and footpaths rich in biodiversity with tree-lined streets, community green spaces, children’s play parks, ponds, and fitness trails. A new scenic wetland route will be created along Shaw Brook.

New pedestrian routes through the neighbourhood will improve access for pedestrians and cyclists, both for the new community and existing residents of the area and to RHS Garden Bridgewater and the Bridgewater Canal. These routes will be accessible for the whole family and community with resting spots and informal opportunities to ‘play on the way'.

“The site has been identified in the Places for Everyone plan for some time and as these plans move forward, we have developed ideas for what would be delivered at this special site close to RHS Garden Bridgewater.

“There is strong demand for all types of housing in Salford so these plans include one to four-bed affordable homes, family houses for sale and Northstone’s newly adapted home for families with dependent relatives. By providing 50% affordable housing overall, we can make a significant contribution to meeting the urgent need for affordable homes in the city.

“Future homes also need to be cleaner, greener and warmer and our homes would be significantly more energy efficient than those built today’s standard.

“We know that peak hour traffic and congestion is an issue locally so we are carrying out a full assessment and working with various transport bodies to provide the necessary improvements to the network.

“We look forward to working with the community to help shape these plans further to meet local needs and complement the surrounding landscape.”

Adoption programme targets support at SMEs with free Christmas guide to 'game-changing' technology.

SME manufacturers across Salford are being urged to start planning for next Christmas by exploring how technology can help with the seasonal surge.

While production is in full swing to meet demand for the festive season, makers across sectors are facing a multitude of challenges, including rising energy prices, supply chain disruption and labour shortages.

But changing consumer habits towards more sustainable products, online shopping and supporting small businesses instead of huge corporations are also creating opportunities for growth.

Made Smarter, a collaboration between the UK government and industry supporting the adoption of digital technologies, is calling on manufacturers to seize the moment to start planning for the future.

It has produced a free downloadable guide to help demystify digitalisation and drive technology adoption. The document titled 'Is digital technology the key to success during busy periods such as Christmas?' includes topics such as how digital tools can help: plan production and capacity, oversee and manage the workforce, forecast demand, and inventory needs, manage stock levels and optimise picking, and automate the packaging process.

The guide also has case studies of Made Smarter-supported manufacturers who are reaping the benefits of investing in technology which is helping them cope with increasing demand during busy periods.

Seven Bro7hers Brewery, based in Salford, is investing to automate their packaging line which will increase productivity, capacity and enable staff to focus on value-added jobs. The technology will also give them a significant amount of data on production line performance, which will support their decision-making.

Donna Edwards, Programme Director for Made Smarter's North West adoption programme, said:

"The festive period is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year for many manufacturers who will also be experiencing tough conditions amid increased energy and materials prices, and supply chain and labour challenges.

"Thankfully, there are numerous technologies you can employ to prepare yourself for the seasonal surge, remain competitive, and set yourself up for success all year round.

"For manufacturers the Christmas rush will highlight bottlenecks and other issues with their processes. The Made Smarter team can work with them to identify potential solutions to these challenges and support them to develop an implementation plan to ensure success in 2023."

Since it was launched in 2018 the adoption programme in the North West has supported 2,500 manufacturers to start their digital journey by providing them with specialist advice and a digital roadmap to help them select the right approach, level of investment and tools for their business.

More than 275 of them, supported by matched funding, have invested in new technology, ranging from software and sensors to robotics and extended reality, to become more efficient, build resilience, increase their productivity and grow sustainably.

As a result, these manufacturers are set to create 1,250 new jobs, upskill almost 2,300 existing roles, deliver an additional £176 million in gross value added to the region, and help the UK meet its net zero target by 2050.

LAUNCHES £40K CROWDFUND FOR EXPANSION

Independent brewery Strange Times Brewing Co. has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help raise £40K for an on-site canning machine that will allow the brand to distribute its products nationwide. Enabling the brewery to start small-packaging its beers will mean it can launch an online shop and sell directly to the public while keeping its prices at a competitive rate.

Strange Times Brewing Co. was launched in Salford, Greater Manchester at the start of 2021. Founder Alex Lord and Head Brewer Lauren Guy have a combined 25 years of industry experience between them, and have built up a loyal following of craft beer fans in the past two years which enabled them to hire Assistant Brewer Aaron Barton-Wells. Like many businesses, Strange Times Brewing Co.'s growth expectations were somewhat impacted by the pandemic, however, the business has continued to thrive. The brewery offers a range of classic and varied core beers, all of which are vegan.

Now, this crowdfund presents the opportunity for them to further expand into the national market. Alex and Lauren have known from the start that they wanted to can their beers and have put huge amounts of work into the creative side of the business to ensure their products will stand out on the shelf.

The £40K crowdfund is a reward-based campaign that will see supporters receive different benefits based on the amount they donate:

£12 - TWO BEER CHEER - Two cans of Strange Times (ST) beer (Two different beers).

£30 - COUPLE GOALS - Four cans of ST beer + two branded glasses (Four different beers).

£40 - DEALERS CHOICE - Eight cans of ST beer (Two of each beer) OR six cans of the Name A Beer competition winning beer.

£55 - TWELVE/TEES - Four cans of ST beer, two branded glasses and a ST T-Shirt OR 12 cans of ST beer (three of each beer).

£70 - HOODIE BUNDLE OR BEER - Four cans of ST beer, two branded glasses and a ST Hoodie OR 20 cans of ST beer.

£80 - SUPER BUNDLE - Four cans of ST beer, two branded glasses, a T-Shirt and a Hoodie OR 24 cans of ST beer.

£100 - MAKE IT YOURSELF - A ST beer cocktail-making experience at Bee Orchid bar in Salford Quays for four people (three cocktails each) OR 34 cans of ST beer.

£250 - STRAIGHT TO YOUR FACE - 12 cans of ST beer a month for six months delivered to your door OR 24 cans of ST beer a month for three months delivered straight to your door.

	£500 - THERE'S A FRIDGE - An exclusive, one-of-a-kind, only one-in-existence offer! A ST branded beer fridge + 60 ST cans of beer.

£750 - THE YEAR OF BEER - 24 cans of ST beer every month for 12 months delivered to your door.

If the crowdfund surpasses its target, these funds will go towards the creation of local job opportunities within the business to further widen Strange Times Brewing Co.’s customer base. The brewery’s future goals include opening a small onsite shop to sell beer and merchandise to the public face-to-face, and to contribute to the local community by organising more events and tours at its brewery site in Salford.

This crowdfund will help us sell Strange Times Brewing Co. beers nationwide which is a vital next step for the growth of our business.”

Strange Times Brewing Co. celebrates creativity from its range of recipes to its imagery. The packaging has been designed by artist Mina Mond and is inspired by tarot cards, the meanings of which tie into the stories of each of its five signature brews, and specialty recipes that will be launched throughout the year.

ØKAR Island Bitter and ØKAR Coffee Mocha Liqueurs are available now to the UK drinks trade for the very first time from Irlam-based purpose-led drinks firm, Ten Locks. Crafted on the land of the Peramangk people, who are the traditional owners of the Adelaide Hills, the liqueurs encapsulate the unique native botanicals and culture of Australia.

The two liquids will be the third and fourth products to join Ten Locks’ portfolio from Applewood Distillery, joining Applewood Coral and Applewood Gin, which have already proved a hit in the UK, having secured listings with Daisy Green Group and New World Trading’s The Botanist Fascia.

Both brands, produced by the leading distiller, form a growing collection of sustainable Australian drinks that exhibit a true passion for creating craft liquids that capture the unique heritage and natural resources of the country.

ØKAR Island Bitter uses some of the rarest and ancient ingredients on earth, all native to the coastal rainforests of Australia, to create a juicy, vibrant and bitter taste. Described as ‘bitter in the back and a party in the front’, it’s an Australian twist on traditional Italian Amari, and presents the opportunity to create next level Negronis at a time when the serve is being embraced by consumers on premise and at home.

ØKAR Mocha is the first truly Australian coffee liqueur. It oozes Australia’s café culture by blending an eclectic mix of Mexican, Brazilian and Papuan coffees with native Wattleseed, Cacao, Coconut and Davidson Plum. The outcome is a beautifully crafted liqueur that shakes up an Espresso Martini or can be enjoyed neat over ice.

ØKAR leads with integrity and has been awarded B-Corp status as a result. Its motto – “Here for a good time & a long time” – aligns perfectly with Ten Locks’ drive to strive forward focused on enacting positive change in the industry. ØKAR uses native Australian ingredients to create demand for plants that grow in the country’s harsh climates, works with local independent farmers to give back to the community, reduces logistic emissions and has invested in solar energy to offset its carbon footprint.

Seven new roles have been created at RECOM Solutions, strengthening its team amid a period of bumper growth.

Andy Mellor has joined RECOM as finance director with a remit that includes providing strategies and implementing procedures to facilitate further growth for the business, which is based at Salford Quays.

RECOM’s finance team has also been strengthened by the appointment of Natalie Ferguson as accounts manager. Her role is to ensure the smooth running of the internal accounts department.

Jordan Wilson has joined RECOM as a construction project manager, bringing more than 10 years’ experience of delivering technical, quality and management functions across complex schemes in the UK and overseas.

Another addition is Tom Salt, who has joined as an assistant construction manager with responsibility for managing subcontractor teams to ensure the successful delivery of RECOM projects.

Luke Roscoe has been recruited to support the strategic development of the business. He is focusing on client success, project delivery and supporting the senior leadership team in developing strategies for further sustained growth.

He has nearly a decade of experience in master–planning and client–side project management across the public and private sectors.

Regeneration business, Peel L&P, has today (17 October) announced plans to create its first biodiversity bank that will enhance habitats and promote biodiversity. Peel L&P’s Sustainability & ESG Director, Jo Holden, made the announcement during a natural environment session at the GMCA’s Greater Manchester Green Summit in Salford.

The biodiversity banking project will involve habitat enhancements, including grassland and woodland, across a 35 hectare, ex-landfill site in Boothstown, Salford.

Peel L&P has worked in partnership with local stakeholders including Greater Manchester Ecology Unit, Natural England and ecologists FPCR over the last couple of years to understand the potential for biodiversity enhancements on the site and develop a 30-year Habitat Management Plan. Peel L&P aims to voluntarily associate a 10% net gain for biodiversity with future development sites, and in Salford, some of this could be within the Boothstown biodiversity bank.

Following the introduction of the Environment Act in 2021, developers are preparing for a mandatory requirement in 2023 for new sites to demonstrate they provide an additional ten percent more biodiversity as part of the development. Defra has created a Biodiversity Net Gain metric, currently Metric 3.1, which will ensure new developments preserve natural habitats where possible, create and restore habitats, and promote ecological connectivity across landscapes. Where the additional ten percent biodiversity is not wholly possible on-site, areas such as biodiversity banks can be used by developers to provide more biodiverse habitats off-site.

Enhancing and embedding biodiversity into its master planning activities is a priority for Peel L&P. The regeneration company’s pledges to (i) ensure that its impact on existing ecosystems and habitats are evaluated and (ii) to leave a site with a better level of biodiversity than when it started, come hand-in-hand with the responsibilities Peel L&P recognises in its Sustainability Five Year Plan and planning ahead for mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain requirements.

The Boothstown project has the potential to generate around 120 ‘Biodiversity units’. Biodiversity units are calculated using the Defra metric, which considers the size of the habitat, its quality and location, and are used for land and intertidal habitats, including hedgerows, rivers and streams. The metric assesses existing habitats, and planned new habitats created by a development or land change.

All of Peel L&P’s ESG activity is underpinned by the globally recognised United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The focus on biodiversity supports Goal 15 ‘Life on Land’, helping communities connect with nature, promote biodiversity and to protect, restore and promote sustainable ecosystems.

The BNG assessment compared baseline conditions to the plans for development and concluded that the plans will provide a net improvement to the biodiversity of the site, increasing biodiversity by 11%. Made Smarter has helped 2,500 businesses use tech and skill to grow GVA by £176 million and create 1,250 jobs

Three-year programme extension will target hundreds more makers with support

A trailblazing programme that has backed Salford manufacturers to adopt new digital technology and skills to create growth and jobs has secured £6.1m funding to continue for three more years.

Made Smarter has helped 2,500 small and medium-sized companies across the region start their digital journey by providing them with specialist advice and a digital roadmap to help them select the right approach, level of investment and tools for their business.

More than 250 of them, supported by matched funding, have invested in new technology, ranging from software and sensors to robotics and extended reality, to become more efficient, build resilience, increase their productivity and grow sustainably.

As a result, these manufacturers are set to create 1,250 new jobs, upskill almost 2,300 existing roles, deliver an additional £176 million in gross value added to the region, and help the UK meet its net zero target by 2050.

Now with a further £6.1m funding from the government, Made Smarter can accelerate its drive to support hundreds more SME manufacturers in Salford to embrace the industry 4.0 movement.

Meanwhile, as a result of the trailblazing work in the Northwest, the national roll out of the Made Smarter adoption programme has continued, and now includes the West of England and East Midlands. They join the Northeast, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the West Midlands regions.

Alain Dilworth, Programme Manager for the Made Smarter Adoption Programme in the Northwest, said:

“I am delighted that the Government has recognised the extraordinary impact that Made Smarter’s adoption programme is having on digitalisation of SME businesses and the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies in the Northwest whilst continuing to fund our work for the next three years.

“While UK manufacturing navigated the pandemic and is working towards recovery, it is also bracing for further challenging times and economic bumps in the road ahead. Our rallying call to manufacturers is that digital technologies offer businesses opportunities to build resilience, innovate and transform. Digital tools can help manufacturers make marginal savings, set themselves apart from competitors in a volatile time, and make products quicker, affordable and more efficiently.

“This new funding means we can renew our ambition to reach out to the region’s SME manufacturers to connect them to the tools that will make an everyday difference to their businesses, build resilience and enable them to keep up with a fast-moving industry.”

Made Smarter’s simple and straightforward approach gets quickly to the heart of a business’s challenges and supports them to take that first step in their digital transformation.

Registration takes five minutes and is followed up with a digital transformation workshop to identify core challenges and provide a bespoke digital manufacturing roadmap.

Made Smarter’s team of expert advisors then pinpoint other ways that the programme can support a company’s digitalisation including skills and leadership development, and recommending the correct technology to invest in.

Salford’s Kingsland Drinks toasts Campaneo Spanish wine range with Miguel Barclay consumer campaign

Kingsland Drinks, based in Irlam, has invested in its popular Campaneo Spanish wine range with an integrated PR, digital and social media partnership with chef and YouTube star, Miguel Barclay. Kicking off this summer and running until the end of the year, the campaign will steer the range into the foodie space, enhancing the credibility of Campaneo and the Campo de Borja wine growing region.

Famed for his low cost, easy to prepare recipes on a budget, the chef behind the ‘One Pound Meals’ cookbook collection and social media channels is working with Kingsland Drinks on the #dinnerhacks themed digital campaign. Centred around the strapline ‘Elevate the everyday’ he is providing tips and hacks for turning midweek meals into sensational serves, offering advice on shopping lists, meal planning, quick recipes and hosting.

Running across mixed media including print, online and on social media channels, the activity targets post-family adults who enjoy mid-week wines and buy them as part of a weekly shop or top up shop. Miguel was charged with driving relatability and access to this audience, and his hacks and tips are designed to enhance everyday dinners, with twists on pizza, pasta, steaks and salad dishes to make them extra special.

Campaneo is aimed confidently at the everyday wine purchase occasion or for pairing with simple tasty foods and easy to prepare meals. The wines are also ideal for BBQs and picnics and offer a selection of no fuss, enjoyable, uncomplicated red wines.   The range features a Garnacha and a Tempranillo with more wines being added to the range during 2022.

IN4 Group’s Skills City to train over 1000 people from underrepresented groups into tech careers and apprenticeship starts

IN4 Group, a leading provider of skills, innovation and start-up growth services, is set to train over 1000 people from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds into technology careers and apprenticeships starts, after multiple government contract wins to the value of £3.5 million through its Skills City operation.

Based at innovation hub HOST, the Home of Skills & Technology in Salford, Skills City now works across the UK, having secured regional contract wins in the North West, North East and the Midlands.

This includes contracts from the Department for Education Skills Bootcamps Wave 3 bid to deliver its unique ‘accelerated apprenticeships’ model that fast-tracks people from Skills Bootcamps into technology apprenticeships, with learners qualifying in less time than the current standard through accredited training.

Skills City provides people across its seven digital Skills Bootcamps, which includes cyber security, software engineering, games development and immersive technologies, with training and development support over 12-16 weeks.

This helps prepare them for a guaranteed job interview which takes them into entry-level roles or careers that go straight into Level 3-5 apprenticeships with a local employer, connecting to Skills City’s employer network of over 3000 jobs and apprenticeships.

The fully funded Skills Bootcamps are aimed at increasing fair access to technology careers, particularly for those from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds.

Skills City has supported people from a variety of backgrounds, including return to work mums, Uber drivers, security guards, ex-military and hospitality workers into roles as cloud engineers and data analysts among others.

Over 32 per cent of learners were female and more than 56 per cent were from Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) groups, with 51 per cent unemployed at the start of their course.

With a focus on innovation and meeting employer demands for digital talent, Skills City will be introducing new Skills Bootcamps in data analytics and cloud engineering with sustainability which will be targeted at future-proofing jobs and the emerging green economy.
