<p><img src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2023_10/main.jpg.d9998b728230d9766e1f16341b1c7935.jpg" /></p>
<p>
	<strong>A new immersive installation at the University of Salford will allow members of the public to interact with the virtual environment of a never-before-seen landscape that was home to a former indigenous group of Southern Brazil.</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Based at the Universities MediaCity campus’ Development Lab, Southern Jê: Exploring Indigenous Heritage Through Immersive Technologies, will introduce visitors to the world of the Jê, an Amerindian Indigenous group.
</p>

<p>
	Opening from Monday 16 October until Friday 20 October, the installation will immerse people amongst the landscape of the Jê, whose cultural heritage remains largely shrouded in mystery and open to interpretation.
</p>

<p>
	The Jê’s modern descendants are represented by the ethnic groups of the Kaigang and Xokleng, based in southern Brazil, and the cultural heritage of the Jê people primarily resides within the memories of their descendants, passed down through stories and myths.
</p>

<p>
	Developed using the Unity 3D game engine and showcased via a 360 physical projection, the experience will allow visitors to seamlessly integrate themselves within the environment and interact with it using an interactive table and a hololens device (a mixed reality headset).
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Dr Juan Hiriart, Senior Lecturer in Interactive Media Arts and Design at the University of Salford, said:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	“This is a groundbreaking immersive experience that will bring visitors into the virtual environment of an indigenous community in Brazil which has been the subject of archaeological fascination for generations.
</p>

<p>
	“Many people in the UK will be completely unaware of what has been happening in Brazil and the ongoing brutal persecution of its indigenous communities, resulting in ethnocide and cultural genocide. Southern Jê will help educate people on this and also showcase the potential of using this technology to inform archaeological discussions and research on South America’s indigenous past.
</p>

<p>
	The wider research project, which has involved researchers and technicians from the University of Salford and multiple universities and museums across Brazil and Belgium, will be utilised in workshops and online sessions for indigenous children at the University Federal of Santa Catarina in Brazil where the children will be able to enter and interact with the virtual space through metaverse technology.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Juan said:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	“The project’s mission is to collaborate with archaeologists and indigenous partners, harnessing the power of new and emerging digital technologies to shed light on their distant past and present challenges.
</p>

<p>
	“This project seeks to restore and celebrate the rich tapestry of indigenous identities woven into the fabric of Latin American culture and DNA.”
</p>

<p>
	Virtual reconstructions such as this have great potential for archaeologists and indigenous communities alike, as they allow both sides to image and explore an environment together in a way that was not possible before.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Juan added:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	“Archaeologists have been studying the Jê for decades but most of their knowledge resides on scientific publications. This virtual reconstruction will help to disseminate this information while also opening spaces for further discussions and interpretations.”
</p>

<p>
	Alongside the immersive exhibition, a series of talks will also take place at their Media City campus on Wednesday 18 October from 3pm about the project and its research implications.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>These talks are:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Professor Erik Champion, Enterprise Fellow and Emeritus Professor at the University of South Australia and former UNESCO Chair of Cultural Heritage and Visualisation on Extended Reality and Heritage Futures
</p>

<p>
	Dr Priscilla Ulguim of Vrije Universiteit Brussel on Towards Collaborative Archaeogaming
</p>

<p>
	Dr Juan Hiriart on Immersive Technology and Indigenous Heritage Preservation.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>The exhibition will be open for public viewing from 4pm to 6pm on Monday 16 October and then from 2pm to 6pm from Tuesday 17 October until Friday 20 October.</strong>
</p>

<p>
	<strong>The full research group for the Southern Jê project consists of:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Main investigator Dr Juan Hiriat and Nathan Bowman from the University of Salford
</p>

<p>

<p>
	The University of Salford Business School announces its pivotal role as a member of the Centre for Digital Innovation (CDI) consortium. Fortified by the £100m Government Innovation Accelerator funding, this consortium is set to address the North West's digital skills gap, particularly aiming to enhance the capabilities of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region.
</p>

<p>
	The CDI consortium, marked by its collaboration between key academic institutions such as Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Salford, Lancaster University, the University of Manchester, GM Colleges and a host of private sector partners, has set its sights on moulding the North West into a digital paragon within the UK.
</p>

<p>
	The overarching vision of the CDI consortium is to establish a transformative supercluster of digital innovation. This initiative promises to furnish SMEs with a wealth of resources, including expert knowledge, groundbreaking research, and avant-garde facilities. It paves the way for the creation of novel products, the fostering of innovative technologies, the establishment of efficient supply chains, and the cultivation of strategic collaborations. With the added focus on staff training, businesses are set to navigate the digital era with confidence and expertise.
</p>

<p>
	Salford Business School plays a central role in charting the digital future. Steering the online digital skills platform of the consortium, the School zeroes in on the foundational pillars of the digital age: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industrial Digitisation (ID), Immersive Technology (IT), and Cyber Security (CY). In doing so, they weave these intricate technologies into the industry's framework, making them accessible, relevant, and ready for application.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Professor Janice Allan, Dean of Salford Business School, remarked:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	"Our role within the Consortium underscores Salford Business School's commitment to technological excellence and inclusivity in the North West. As the digital landscape swiftly evolves, embedding digital proficiency into our educational framework is crucial. At Salford Business School, we're leading the charge, equipping our graduates for the ever-changing demands of the digital age.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Earlier in March, when discussing the allocation of the £100m Innovation Accelerator funding, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, remarked:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	“Greater Manchester’s selection as one of three Innovation Accelerator regions demonstrates the Government’s confidence in our innovation ecosystem. The projects being backed are undertaking world-leading research to address some of the biggest challenges we face."

<p>
	A new film is bringing to light how glaucoma can be prevented from affecting those around us. It is the creation of an academic from The University of Salford, who started researching the disease twenty years ago.
</p>

<p>
	Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease and the largest cause of irreversible blindness that affects an estimated 100 million people globally. A significant proportion of glaucoma is inherited as a genetic condition. With glaucoma, neurons (ganglion cells) in the retina begin to die causing vision loss and ultimately blindness. Most people who are affected by the disease only realise they have it after they’ve already lost 70-80% of their sight.
</p>

<p>
	Dr Arijit Mukhopadhyay, an expert Human Genetics &amp; Genomics at the University of Salford, has created a film called ‘Vision of the Blind Lady’ that focuses in on an Indian family that have a specific genetic defect of Glaucoma. This rare and aggressive mutation can be found in all populations over the world. The family that is focused on in the film has a condition where children who have inherited the genetic defect can begin to lose vision at the age of 12 and become fully blind by the age of 18.
</p>

<div class="ipsEmbeddedVideo" contenteditable="false">
	<div>
		<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="113" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/MgWYvDEY3NA?feature=oembed" title="VISION OF THE BLIND LADY" width="200"></iframe>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	It has a huge impact on the families. One of the family members the film focusses on said: “I wanted to sell everything to get some money with the hope that with money we can be cured. But doctors told us, it is in our DNA, no amount of money can cure it.”
</p>

<p>
	<strong>When asked how the condition affects what she can see, she added:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	“Everything is dark. But the darkness is lighter when there is nothing in front of me. When I see darker darkness amidst lighter darkness, I know something is in front of me.”
</p>

<p>
	Arijit’s research, which was completed in the early 2000’s and is now being resumed with academics at the University of Salford and researchers in India, has shown promise that not only can the disease be slowed down, but if it is caught early enough and operated on, it can be stopped completely.
</p>

<p>
	Primarily funded by the Research Impact funds at the University of Salford the film’s goal is to demonstrate the impact of inherited conditions and how they can be prevented earlier on in life.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Dr Mukhopadhyay said:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	“The reason I made the film is that clinicians were not initially convinced that we can surgically operate before the disease fully manifests. Early diagnosis and early intervention are at the heart of the global focus on precision health which is also aligned with the integration of genomics in human health envisioned by the NHS. We need healthcare to be primarily proactive (prevention) where possible, rather than reactive (waiting for symptoms) – and use of genetic information is crucial to realise that future.
</p>

<p>
	“After the film has been shown, its impact has resulted in clinical experts and genetic counsellors becoming convinced. Now, thanks to the film, the expert that is seen in the movie has started treating and operating on children to try and prevent the aggressive mutation from making them blind at such a young age.”
</p>

<p>
	Motivated by the film’s strong message reputed charitable organisations such as Rotary has come forward to help with the logistics of providing timely treatment to this family.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>He went on to say:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	“I would also like to impact a policy change, where you start disease management from a genetic screening step. Inherited diseases can surface at any point in life, so we shouldn’t wait, and we can prepare the children for what’s coming.” He is currently engaged with clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors and relevant policy makers in India towards realising this dream.
</p>

<p>
	The film has been shown in multiple venues in India and in Salford to many students, as well being presented at the LTech festival organised by University of Salford. To further support the industry-leading research that takes place at the University of Salford, Dr Mukhopadhyay will be speaking at TEDx Salford later this month about the success of the film and his research.

<p><img src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2023_10/main.jpg.5941085343ab4797e511a35e2d8249f6.jpg" /></p>
<p>
	Mobile phone use should be banned in schools across England to improve behaviour, the Education Secretary Gillian Keegan yesterday announced.
</p>

<p>
	New guidance from the Department for Education will back head teachers in banning mobile phone use throughout the school day, including at break times, to tackle disruptive behaviour and online bullying while boosting attention during lessons. It aims to support the wider work the government is doing to raise standards in schools by increasing students’ focus and reducing distractions.
</p>

<p>
	This ban supports the hard work of teachers and education staff – and continues to build on government’s reforms backed up by the highest level of funding for schools in history, in real terms, of nearly £60 billion by 2024-25.
</p>

<p>
	The move will bring England in line with other countries that have already implemented a ban, including France, Italy and Portugal. It follows warnings from the United Nations on the risks of smartphones in schools and government data that found around a third (29%) of secondary school pupils reported mobile phones being used when they were not supposed to in most, or all, lessons.
</p>

<p>
	If schools fail to implement the new guidance, the government will consider legislating in the future to make the guidance statutory.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Tom Bennett, school behaviour advisor yesterday said:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	"This is a fantastic move forward for ensuring that students are able to work, learn and grow in a place free from the distracting influence of mobile phones. Schools that have already banned them report that students are safer, happier and able to focus far more than they were before- and it’s popular with them too.
</p>

<p>
	"And heads should now be reassured that their efforts to keep schools mobile-free will be backed by the DfE. This is a positive and progressive step forward."
</p>

<p>
	The guidance will set out limited exemptions where necessary - for example, where children require their phones for medical reasons.
</p>

<p>
	The ban builds on a £10 million investment in behaviour hubs which support up to 700 schools to improve behaviour alongside the appointment of a new behavioural taskforce led by DfE’s behaviour tsar Tom Bennett.

<p>
	It’s GCSE results day, and at <strong>Buile Hill Academy</strong>, <strong>Ellesmere Park High School</strong>, and <strong>Moorside High School</strong>, communities are coming together to celebrate students’ achievements.
</p>

<p>
	The results received today are a testament to the hard work and commitment Salford students have shown during their time at secondary school, and they will go on to help them shape their future choices, whether that’s further study, an apprenticeship or training in the workplace.
</p>

<p>
	This year saw a normal exam season after the turbulent years of the pandemic, and challenges remain in schools across the country. In recognition of this, the exams regulator Ofqual asked exam boards to consider the impact the pandemic continues to have on students.
</p>

<p>
	Staff at the schools, all part of Consilium Academies, have gone over and above to support their Year 11 students, preparing them academically as well as emotionally to sit their exams. This includes targeted intervention, workshops during holidays and “last drop” sessions for students, as well as sessions for parents to ensure they understood the importance of working in partnership with students and parents.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>This support has enabled students to secure some fantastic results this year, including:</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Maria Covasa, Moorside High School, achieved seven grade 9s, one grade 8, one grade 7 and is intending to study A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at Winstanley College.

We are incredibly proud of all our students, and they are far more than a grade to us. The resilience they have shown under such conditions is remarkable. The success of our students is down to their hard work, and exceptional effort, combined with the passion and enthusiasm of our staff at Moorside High School who, year after year, give huge amounts of additional time, support and guidance whenever it is needed. We have seen some individually outstanding results, but whatever the students’ results are, it is important to remember that there are many different options out there, with lots of high-quality routes into further study, the workplace or a combination of both.

They have so much to look forward to and will no doubt make a positive difference wherever they go in the next stage of their lives.

Academic success, and  innate ability to perform confidently alongside children from the most privileged families, is our absolute goal for every child. It has been a tough year for many and the effects of Covid, in my view, still affect many of our students. Despite this, they took full advantage of every opportunity offered to them to be fully prepared for the ultimate lengthy exam season, and have worked hard. It has been heartwarming and a joy to see their confidence and resilience grow as the year progressed, supported by the dedicated staff of Ellesmere.
		</p>

		<p>
			“Today, the results speak for themselves. Seeing the children celebrate with their teachers, their families and each other is a reminder of what we are all about at Ellesmere. I wish them every success in their next steps and will always remind them that this is their school and they are always welcome here.”

<p>
	The mother of a girl with special educational needs has received an apology – and £2,000 – from Salford council over its failure to provide schooling.
</p>

<p>
	The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has ruled that the council did not consider the provision of alternative education properly, resulting in the missed provision.
</p>

<p>
	For a total of five months in 2022, the child, known as ‘C’ did not receive education.
</p>

<p>
	Salford council must also provide guidance to staff about alternative education provision and their responsibilities for ‘ensuring it is considered and provided where necessary’.
</p>

<p>
	Evidence it has complied with the rulings must be provided to the Ombudsman by the authority.
</p>

<p>
	C was unable to attend school from March 2022, the Ombudsman said. Her mother, ‘Mrs B’, complained to the council about the lack of alternative education provision.

<p>
	Under the Education Act 1996, councils must arrange suitable education at school or elsewhere for pupils who are out of school because of exclusion, illness or other reasons.
</p>

<p>
	This applies to all children of compulsory school age living in the local council area, whether or not they are on the role of a school.

<p>
	The council was ordered to apologise to Mrs B and C; pay Mrs B £2,000 in respect of lost education provision between March and July 2022, a period of three-and-a-half months taking into account school holidays, at a rate of £400 per month, totalling £1,400; and October 2022 to November 2022, a period of six weeks, totalling £600.

<p>
	Nine talented University of Salford students and alumni are heading to the Edinburgh TV Festival this month after securing places on its coveted talent scheme.
</p>

<p>
	The seven current students and two Salford alumni make up just less than a fifth of the total cohort for the festival’s prestigious Network scheme which identifies and nurtures the next generation of TV talent from all backgrounds.
</p>

<p>
	Network students will head to Edinburgh for four days of sessions and masterclasses from some of the most influential and important people in the media industry that are designed to introduce them to every aspect of the television industry and set them up for their first roles post-graduation.
</p>

<p>
	Students will also be paired with a mentor from the sister scheme Ones to Watch and join the festival’s job pool, connecting them with entry-level job opportunities.
</p>

<p>
	One of the lucky few heading to Edinburgh is 48-year-old mature student Byron Mondahl from our MA Documentary Production course.

	Both Albion Academy, Salford and Co-Op Academy, Walkden, have been rated good overall in their first inspections since converting to academies. Both schools' quality of education, leadership and management, behaviour and attitudes and personal development of pupils were all also rated good. Both schools were previously rated in need of improvement.
</p>

<p>
	Inspectors said the Albion Academy had high expectations of all pupils, had developed a broad and balanced curriculum with teachers who are knowledgeable about their subject and had built strong, positive relationships with the children. Inspectors found that pupils feel safe and happy in school, are polite and respectful and keen to do their best and enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities including summer camp creative writing, theatre visits and skiing lessons.

<p>
	Co-op Academy, Walkden was also praised for its broad curriculum, focused learning and culture of high aspirations which ensures pupils are making good progress. Inspectors said the school had created a kind and considerate community, with positive and respectful relationships between staff and pupils.
</p>

<p>
	Inspectors also praised staff for introducing a cycle donation scheme where pupils can also learn how to maintain and fix their bikes and for providing a good range of clubs and activities.
</p>

<p>
	Areas for improvement include improving training for teachers in some subject areas to ensure the most effective learning. Both schools were encouraged to continue trying to tackle low attendance amongst some pupils.

	Salford City Council has praised Belvedere Nursery for being rated as good by Ofsted.
</p>

<p>
	It has been rated as good for overall effectiveness, quality of education, leadership and management, overall effectiveness, and outstanding for behaviour and attitudes.
</p>

<p>
	The nursery provides early education sessions to 80 children. It’s one of five Salford Family Nurseries run by Salford City Council which offer high quality, affordable childcare with funded places for two, three and four year olds.
</p>

<p>
	It is part of the council’s Starting Life Well Services which works closely with the Early Help Service which provide support to children, young people, and families. These services include Family Hubs (formerly known as children’s centres), which have Early Help Practitioners and Parenting Practitioners and a range of other health and social care professionals.

<p>
	Salford University has donated 60 laptops to a local charity to help upskill homeless people.
</p>

<p>
	Emmaus Salford supports people who have been homeless by providing them with a place to stay, and with meaningful work in a community setting.
</p>

<p>
	Whilst at Emmaus people have access to individual support, training and personal development, to gain the skills and resilience needed to move forward positively in their lives. The laptops will be used as part of a training resource, to help upskill those that the charity helps and to help them create CV and with job applications.
</p>

<p>
	The Energy House 2.0 team at Salford University, Rochdale based construction company, Casey, and AEW Architects have been working with the charity on their ‘People’s Pods’ initiative that will support those who are sleeping rough. The aim is to upgrade and refurbish the site cabins; providing a warm and safe place to stay on a temporary basis.
</p>

<p>
	The thermal properties of a cabin were evaluated in the Energy House 2.0 under winter conditions, with the team making recommendations in terms of upgrading the structural insulation and the heating system to provide a warm and comfortable environment with low running costs.

<p>
	The University of Salford has announced the launch of a brand-new programme to develop and create the professionals that construction firms need.
</p>

<p>
	Construction is one of the largest employers in the UK, and there is currently a large skills shortage in the sector, with a need for professionals who possess the right knowledge and insight to lead and problem solve in real-life projects.
</p>

<p>
	Starting from September 2023, the Construction Site Supervisor Level 4 Apprenticeship programme, completed over two years, will enable students to study and complete a valuable apprenticeship, developing crucial industry related skills.
</p>

<p>
	Being delivered by one of the UK’s leading centres for built environment education, students will study a wide range of construction and property-related topics. Those who complete the course will achieve Professional registration as TechCIOB as well as have an industry recognised qualification supporting future career development and will also have the option of progressing onto the Construction Site Management Level 6 apprenticeship upon completion.
</p>

<p>
	The course is completed over a 2-year period, with all students completing six key modules over the course of their study including Construction Management Practice, Sustainable Construction Technology, Building Services and Sustainability, Construction Law, Procedure and Regulation, Management and Project Delivery, and a collaborative Integrated Project, with all being delivered through face-to face lessons at Salford.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Paul Grayson will lead the course at Salford. He said:</strong>

		</p>

		<p>
			“All our programmes are delivered by a team of professionals, who bring their industry knowledge and experience into the educational setting, linking with national and international contractors to develop a complete learning package, tailored to meet the needs of employers.”

<p>
	A world-first cinematic experience that seeks to fully immerse its participants in its story will premiere at the University of Salford’s MediaCity campus this month.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Vera’s Not Alone is a new ground-breaking film installation from the University’s own Dr Pavel Prokopic that uses cinematic techniques to blur the line between the real and the imaginary.
</p>

<p>
	Premiering for public view from Tuesday 27 June, the film is Dr Prokopic’s first example of using his Nested Cinema concept, which is interdisciplinary practice-as-research that is inspired by and builds upon art cinema traditions.
</p>

<p>
	The concept involves presenting the film to its audience through multiple distinct layers of the cinematic experience that provides an immersive experience for the viewer which blurs the boundaries between the physical and the virtual.
</p>

<p>
	This consists of filmed content displayed on screens in a location that brings the world of the film to life, cinematic virtual reality (provided through VR headsets) to bring the audience further into the story and the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology through sound and lighting devices within the installation space to ensure that the participant becomes fully immersed in the narrative.
</p>

<p>
	The narrative follows the character Vera who we meet in an apocalyptic environment and soon discover that she is not alone.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Dr Prokopic, Lecturer in Film at the University of Salford said:</strong>
</p>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix" data-gramm="false">

		<p>
			“This is a world first. The whole concept of Nested Cinema is a completely new approach in which you bring your audience through multiple layers to experience film in a new way that will be fully immersive. It combines the real advantages of using virtual reality in the performance and utilising smart devices, specifically lighting, to creating a truly unique environment.
		</p>

		<p>
			“I hope that each audience member gets a deeper and more profound experience of film as a result. It is a real showcase of what cinema can achieve, the atmosphere that it creates and what it means for its audiences.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The intimate setting for audiences to take part in the 15-minute installation is an atmospheric interior space in the Development Lab of the University’s MediaCity campus building.
</p>

<p>
	It has been developed by Dr Prokopic, who created, wrote and directed the installation, alongside the Creative Technology Labs team in Technical Services and fellow academic colleagues based at the University’s School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Dr Prokopic added:</strong>
</p>

			“It has been super important to have the support of my colleagues at the University to deliver this exciting new project. Multiple people have made a big contribution, especially Jayne Sayer, who designed the installation set and flexible lighting atmospheres as well as Roger McKinley, John Joseph and Jake Orton from the Creative Tech Labs team.
		</p>

		<p>
			“As it is such a new idea, there have been a few challenges but I have had a lot of support around me to find the solutions to them.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	As the project can be transported, Dr Prokopic is hoping that in the event that the installation is a success, the experience could be exhibited elsewhere across the UK.
</p>

<p>
	The installation will have a private preview on Monday 26 June from 5pm and will then be available to the public from Tuesday 27 June until Friday 30 June, opening to visitors from 10am until 5pm.
