The much loved Greater Manchester Archaeology Day returns to Peel Hall at Salford Uni Campus on Saturday the 30th of November (2019) and this years Brian Grimsditch Memorial Lecture will be given by Dr Mike Heyworth who holds the position of executive director of the council for British Archaeology.

Brian was a well known figure across Greater Manchester having overseen many a dig and discovery, some of which our predecessors SalfordOnline and Historian Tony Flynn had the opportunity to cover.

Sadly Brian passed away aged just 61-years-old in 2015. His memory lives on in what has become an annual history lecture at the event each year.

This years event falls on the 30th of November 2019 and the day will see many talks from centre staff as well as stalls detailing their most recent fieldwork spanning the previous twelve months.

There will also be stalls selling archaeology and history books as well as refreshments available in the form of teas, coffees and biscuits.

Some of the most prominent excavations across Greater Manchester will also be highlighted by leading experts in their field.

The inspiration for both the Federation and the Archaeology Day can be traced back to the establishment of the Greater Manchester Archaeology Group, in 1979. This was the forerunner of the first version of the Greater Manchester Archaeology Federation, which was established in 1984.

The Group, along with the newly established Greater Manchester Archaeology Unit (in 1980), ran a Greater Manchester Archaeology Day in 1981 and throughout the 1980's.

So they are running into a series of celebrations with 2020 marking the 40th anniversary of professional archaeology within Greater Manchester, and 2021 marking the 40th anniversary of the Greater Manchester Archaeology day, at least as a concept.

Many things have changed in those four decades and GMAD 2020 will be looking to capture some of those developments.

Tickets for the day are priced at just £10 each and are available from the link below.

The night of the 22nd of May 2017 was a night that would never be forgotten by the people of Manchester, a night that would see 22 people callously slaughtered as crowds prepared to exit a packed Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena.

As parents awaited their children in the foyer, British born Muslim of Libyan ancestery, Salman Ramadan Abedi, detonated a bomb hidden in his backpack which was so powerfil it was capable of killing anyone stood within a 20 metre radius outright.

In total 22 innocent people lost their lives, many of them children who had gone to see the concert, up to 250 others were caught up in the blast and injured , with countless others left holding emotional scars which will last them a lifetime.

The senseless killing of these innocents prompted scenes of mourning that Greater Manchester has never seen before, and hopefully will never bear witness to again.

Today, Hashem Abedi, brother of Salman, stood in the dock at the Old Bailey to enter his pleas of not guilty to the 22 counts of murder which were read to him by the courts clerk.

As each charge was read out he replied 'Not Guilty', the same response given when read the additional charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause an explosion to endanger life.

The start of the trial was put back until January the 13th 2020 and he was remanded back into custody.

The Salford Super Mum with a heart of gold is no stranger in Salford when it comes to helping those in need, since Natalie Jane Lek's early days which saw her cooking a thousand Christmas dinners for the most needy in society, she has gone on to found the much loved Launch Project with the goal of helping local families who are struggling to cope as austerity bites.

Be that via offering cheap but quality recycled school uniforms, to delivering cheap healthy food packages for those families who need to make every penny count when it comes to their weekly shopping bills, Natalie has tried hard to come up with a solution for everything and there really seems to be no stopping her.

With that in mind she has long recognised the need for a FREE legal advice service in Salford.

Lek Legal Services will offer completely free of charge legal advice to any resident of Salford who need it, this includes help with resolving benefit sanctions and penalty issues, help with advice and filing in forms for everything from housing benefit and council tax to personal independence payments and universal credit.

If the need be LLS will even attend tribunals and speak to the courts on behalf of their clients so as to ensure they have the best legal representation they can.

Over the summer there were a number of ownership changes within the bus network in Northern areas of Greater Manchester, many of which affect Salford

To make sure these changes passed smoothly for customers, a temporary arrangement was put in place for tickets issued by First, Go North West and Diamond Bus to be accepted on each company’s buses.

Now that each company’s network of services in North Manchester is clearly established, the bus companies say that there is no longer a need for this temporary arrangement to continue.

As such, with effect from 1 January 2020, each individual operator’s tickets will only be valid on that operator’s buses.

Customers are being advised to check that they have the correct tickets for the services they use.

For those customers who wish to use more than one operator’s services, there is a full range of great value tickets available through System One which are valid on all bus services in Greater Manchester.

If you have a Netflix account like me then chances are you share it with members of your family, I know I do as my daughter currently lives away in Wales and she uses my account to catch up on episodes of her favourite shows. In fact the whole reason I got Netflix in the first place was to cut the cord with conventional broadcast TV and because of the flexibility of online streaming from anywhere in the world.

Well it seems all of that may be about to come to an end as apparently Netflix has had enough of what it see's as lost revenues, so if you innocently share your account with Granny then chances are she may be getting her services cut off in the not to distant future.

The provider has revealed that it is currently monitoring people who hand out their passwords to family and friends to use and the company is looking at ways to close the loophole which allows passwords to be shared.

The cost of the service ranges from between £5.99 and £11.99 and the most costly option allows you to view on up to four screens at a time so long as they know the password, but after falling revenues partly down to the investments made in programming by the company in recent years, they are now looking at closing the loophole.

This of course would risk alienating customers who are paying for the service with some declaring that they will simply close their accounts if it happens, a move which Netflix would want to avoid at all costs as they rely on the revenue to survive.

The real problem is not so much with families sharing passwords but with some groups who are making tidy profits at the expense of Netflix by reselling single accounts on a multi screen subscription at a reduced monthly cost.

Netlfix say's that it is looking towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) software to solve the problem, with one possibility coming in the form of video software provider Synamedia who have already showcased a fully working behavioural analysis solution which can spot patterns in where and how users log on to the service, flagging them for a human to take a look at.

The software monitors for what it considers to be fraudulent activity, then it alerts staff so they can act upon its findings and have final say on if you loose your account.

The amount of money Netflix claims it is loosing as a result of this kind of credential sharing is not to be sniffed at as losses could be as much as £7.6 billion by 2021 the firm claims.

Ironically I pay for a Netflix subscription I barely watch, my daughter watches from Wales and my son occasionally watches in between lectures and lessons at Uni. Neither do so from home.

Police discovered the boy locked away in a small dark room with just a bowl of water to drink from after being called to the property earlier this month (3rd October) , two people were arrested at the scene shortly afterwards.

A man aged 32 and a woman aged 30 were arrested on suspicion of child neglect but were later released under investigation.

This years FREE display will feature the 'Bones of Paine' spooky puppet parade as the event combines Halloween with Bonfire Night.

The Bonfire will be lit as usual at 7:00pm with the much loved and spectacular Fireworks display to follow not long after at 7:30pm.

The event will end at around 9:30pm.

As always the roads around the area can become heavily congested so ensure if you are heading that way in the car that you leave early and please try to be respectful when parking as there have been many instances in which people have blocked homes in the area.

It has become something of a much loved annual event which attracts people in their thousands to the park, this year will not disappoint as the public from far and wide will once more be invited to descend upon the park to enjoy the Bonfire celebrations and as always it is totally free.

The event will start at around 5pm with a 'Little Sparks in the Park' display scheduled for around 5:30pm. This is a smaller display for the younger children with an emphasis on less noise and big bangs.

The bonfire will be lit from 7pm onwards with the main firework event taking place 30 mins later at 7:30pm with the event closing at 9:30pm.

A funfair will be on site again this year as will the various burger and hotdog stands so be sure to bring a little cash if you want something to eat.

As always parking is seriously restricted so be sure to get there early if you are looking for a spot and try to be respectful of the locals by not blocking roads or drives with your cars.

There are bus routes from across the city which cris-cross the area which we would recommend if and where possible as the roads around the park can become highly congested.

Manchester families are being invited to step into the realms of their imagination as Tangled Dance Company’s professional dancers and musicians unlock the frozen secrets of Salford’s Ordsall Hall and its enthralling world of wizards.

Set in a magical wizarding world, the spellbinding promenade dance performance focuses on the world of the ‘Tailors of Illusion’, following the Tailors, as they move from room to room in the venue, working their magic to untangle the growing roots of greed and restore the warmth of Christmas.

Each year at Christmas one of the Tailors is called to the Sirens of Yore(Choir) to be tested. Siblings Greta and Kristoff are both young Tailors and this Christmas Greta has been selected to visit the Sirens. She must collect one strand of each of their voices, to produce a magical cloak. Greta has to resist the urge to look into the Sirens’ eyes or a freezing curse will befall her and all in the land. However, Greta cannot resist and she looks into their eyes, then steals all their voices. Her heart turns to ice, and she is poisoned with such greed and hate that she goes on to rule the land and its people very harshly. Can Kristoff steal back the powerful voices and find a way to break the spell that has been cast on his sister?

There’s not many shows that we can all enjoy together but this was definitely one! We will definitely be back” and “It was magical, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I think they should do more stuff like this in stately homes because everyone should get a chance to see something like this.”

Tickets cost £10 for adults and £8 for children and are now available on Skiddle and in person at Ordsall Hall. Performances run at 2.30pm, 4.30pm and 6.30pm on Saturdays and at 4.30pm, 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Sundays. Each performance lasts approximately an hour.

Tangled Dance Company was founded in 2013 by Manchester choreographer and dance artist, Amy Hallam. Amy graduated from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2012 and now works as a freelance dance artist touring internationally with companies such as Wired Aerial Theatre, alongside running Tangled. In February 2014 Tangled received a Research and Development residency with Dance Manchester exploring initial ideas for a project and Amy’s first production ‘Once Upon A Twisted Tale’ was born and toured venues and festivals throughout the North West since then; the success of these performances inspired her to continue creating work that engages the public.

Since then, Tangled has performed at such festivals as Ignite Imaginations - Sheffield Light Night, Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival and Manchester's Urban Moves International Dance Festival. The company has continued to expand, creating more and larger scale site specific productions and developed a unique strand of Dance Photography Workshops. Tangled has received funding from Arts Council England to support their projects since 2016 and Frosted by Magic is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

A real family affair, Amy works alongside mum Vicky Eccleston, a professional costume and props designer, who creates unique portable sets for all of Tangled’s productions.

Tangled Dance Company is committed to making contemporary dance accessible to the public and creating opportunities for Manchester and Northern based artists to work in the North of England.

Fortunately there were no injuries after an aircraft had to abort it's landing attempt as a firework exploded next to it during descent to the runway. The incident is thought to have happened on Friday 18th October.

The pilot was able to land on the second attempt but the act of utter stupidity has been slammed by airport officials as the outcome could have been a lot worse.

Airport bosses hit out at the dangerous, stupid and irresponsible act so close to the busy airport.
