<p>
	Treatment has improved hugely over the past 25 years and more people are aware that stroke is a medical emergency and the faster it is recognised, the more hospital staff can do.
</p>

<p>
	That will be the key message of a special event at Salford Care Organisation on World Stroke Day on Tuesday 29 October (11am-3pm).
</p>

<p>
	The Northern Care Alliance brings together the Salford Royal and Pennine Acute trusts and manages four Care Organisations, Salford, Oldham, Bury &amp; Rochdale, and North Manchester.
</p>

<p>
	The drop-in event for stroke survivors, carers, NHS professionals and the wider community in Mayo Building at Salford Royal Hospital will give an insight into what happens when people have a stroke and the steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of a stroke from occurring.
</p>

<p>
	There will be a chance to find out more about what we can all do to lower our risk of having a stroke, including blood pressure checks, as well as information on what happens in the brain when a stroke happens.
</p>

<p>
	Expert staff from Salford Care Organisation and the Stroke Association will explain how rehabilitation can help recovery after a stroke.
</p>

<p>
	Researchers at the University of Manchester and Salford Care Organisation will highlight some of the past and current studies that are improving diagnosis, care and treatment, including a programme to tackle cognitive decline after stroke and trials of an anti-inflammatory drug to see if it can reduce disability after stroke.
</p>

<p>
	And stroke survivors, doctors and volunteers will talk about rebuilding lives after stroke and dealing with long-term effects, such as fatigue and anxiety.
</p>

<p>
	Stroke Consultant Professor Craig Smith said:

		</p>

		<p>
			“We also want to highlight the treatments and rehabilitation that are available and to let people know how research that’s going on locally is helping to improve the care we give to stroke survivors.
		</p>

		<p>
			“Stroke is devastating and recovery can be tough but we want people to know that there is specialist support both in the health service and from the Stroke Association.”

She immediately rang 999 and within an hour I was being scanned in hospital.  I was in hospital for a month and left in a wheelchair but fortunately I have now recovered sufficiently to lead an almost normal life.

			“Craig and his colleagues throughout the NHS deserve recognition for all they do in the realm of stroke survivors care.”
		</p>

</blockquote>

<p>
	The event comes as Salford Care Organisation’s Acute Stroke Unit is celebrating 15 years of providing specialist life-saving treatment for patients from across Greater Manchester. It was also the first hospital in Greater Manchester to have its own dedicated stroke doctor and stroke rehabilitation unit. Salford Hyperacute Stroke Research Unit is one of only eight in the NHS and researchers from the Care Organisation and The University of Manchester are developing new treatments for stroke. Fairfield General Hospital also has an acute stroke unit with eight hyper-acute stroke beds.
</p>

<p>
	Kate Charles, Director at the Stroke Association, said:

		</p>

		<p>
			“Recovery is tough, but with the right specialist support and a ton of courage and determination, the brain can adapt. We hope to see lots of people at the World Stroke Day event where they can find out not only how to prevent the condition, but also how to rebuild their lives after stroke.”

<p>
	This is the perfect time of year to check your car tyres ahead of the colder winter months.
</p>

<p>
	Salford has already experienced an unprecedented amount of rain over the last few weeks, so in order to ensure safety on the regions roads, it’s imperative the tyres on your car can withstand the conditions and meet the legal standards.
</p>

<p>
	The latest figures show that in 2018 there were a total of 459 road traffic collisions in the UK as a result of illegal, defective or under inflated tyres. In addition to this, 17 people sadly lost their life as a result, with a further 116 suffering serious life changing injuries.
</p>

<p>
	The consequences of driving with illegal tyres could cost you three penalty points on your licence, as well as a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre, most importantly it could cost the lives.
</p>

<p>
	With that in mind GMP is planning six days of action across the force that will aim to increase education and enforcement.
</p>

<p>
	Traffic Police Community Support Officer, Mark Pickford of GMP said:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">
		Quote
	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix">
		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			“Tyres are the only thing that connects your car to the road so it’s important to make sure they keep you safe.
		</p>

		<p>
			“There is an easy test to take in order to see if your tyre depth hit the safety make and all you need is a 20p piece. The outside border of the 20p should disappear if your tyres have the correct tread depth, if it doesn’t, your tyres may be below the legal limit and you could receive points and a fine.
		</p>

		<p>
			“The legal tyre depth for cars in the UK and Europe is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Anything under this could be illegal.”
		</p>

<p><img src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2019_10/sensory2.jpg.31dc221ac819e26ab74c860c5d66c19a.jpg" /></p>

<p>
	The Mansion Association was born out of public anger after proposals to build homes within the boundary of Buile Hill Park emerged online, since the associations early days and tentative initial meetings, it has gone from strength to strength.
</p>

<p>
	The associations <strong><a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/171606253691611/" rel="external nofollow"><span style="color:#e74c3c;">Facebook Group</span></a></strong> has steadily grown and in recent months it has seen a huge burst of activity and support from the public who have thrown their weight behind the belief that the historic park and mansion can be once more brought back to a condition that the whole City can be proud of.
</p>

<p>
	They have been at the forefront of the campaign to protect the park from housing developers as well as the fight to restore the grade 2 park and mansion back to their former glory, with a <strong><a href="https://www.change.org/p/salford-council-stop-salford-council-building-houses-in-buile-hill-park-before-it-is-to-late?use_react=false" rel="external nofollow"><span style="color:#e74c3c;">petition</span></a><span style="color:#e74c3c;"> </span></strong>ran by Lynda Curran managing to gain over three thousand signatures, a noble effort which was widely seen as being instrumental in highlighting the growing opposition to any form of plans for housing within the park.
</p>

<p>
	This option has since been completely ruled out by Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett, after a huge public backlash prompted him to make a statement on the parks future, housing has since been discounted, with other options now being pursued.
</p>

<p>
	Whilst the plans for the Mansion and Depot area's future are still being discussed and debated, the group hopes to get a head start on restoring at least one part of the park, that being the 'sensory garden' which was originally known as the garden for the blind when it first opened to the public back in 1963.
</p>

<p>
	<img alt="72877306_10217953112717959_8140781274554957824_n.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1173" data-unique="b6yxd3a32" src="https://salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2019_10/72877306_10217953112717959_8140781274554957824_n.jpg.b9fdff2269c5e3d5804726af9c49fa17.jpg" width="500" data-ratio="77"></p>

<p>
	Sadly the Garden was shelved due to budget cuts and as with the Mansion, it has since fallen into disuse and decline to such an extent that it was overgrown, wild and unkempt.
</p>

<p>
	Despite a <a href="https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/buile-hill-park-sensory-garden" rel="external nofollow"><strong><span style="color:#e74c3c;">crowdfunder</span></strong> </a>by the parks friends group in 2017 which raised £27 to buy new bulbs and flowers, the garden has sadly remained empty and unloved, albeit in a much better state than in previous years thanks to the hard work of volunteers who put a lot of effort into removing the brambles and overgrowth.
</p>

<p>
	After what was described as a positive meeting with the Mayor and the Council last week, the mansion group has set its sights on trying to restore the garden back to a place of beauty for the local community to enjoy once more, they are seeking permission to 'revive' the garden.
</p>

<p>
	The group has asked the council for permission to have access in order to clean it up and make the area available to the public once more, with that in mind they are looking for volunteers to devote a little time and effort into clearing the site of any old vegetation and to help clean it up and make it look beautiful once more.
</p>

<p>
	The public response to the idea so far has been nothing but positive with people from across the whole city offering to put in a little time and effort to make it happen. The people of Salford are seemingly very much behind this idea and want to see it happen.
</p>

<p>
	We popped down with a camera this morning to see the current state for ourselves and although the local friends group have done a sterling job of cleaning up and maintaining the area, it really could do with a little more tender loving care to revive it back to its former status as a local asset and thing of beauty.
</p>

<p>
	<img alt="sensory1.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1174" data-unique="6p9mnyv0p" src="https://salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2019_10/sensory1.jpg.e4f0aa0f9136853d64929ca0112be674.jpg" width="900" data-ratio="64.89"></p>

<p>
	Whilst there we spoke to a lady named Karen who lives local to the park, she suggested that local green fingered folks could maybe grow plants to be planted in the garden each year, she also suggested it may be a good idea to ask local schools to become involved in order to turn it into a community garden, by the community for the community.
</p>

<p>
	She said,
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">

	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix">

		<p>
			"It's an asset they can pass down to their children to enjoy in later life."
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	John who has walked his dogs at Buile Hill for over 3 decades, thought it was a 'grand idea'.
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix">

		</p>

		<p>
			"When the garden was allowed to fall into decline I was saddened at the state it would later come to be in.
		</p>

		<p>
			"I would love to see it being used once more."
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Others have suggested contacting local allotments &amp; growers associations asking them to get involved as well as the RHS who are soon to open their latest 'Bridgewater' garden in Worsley.
</p>

<p>
	The will and want of the community is there, all it needs is for the council to sign off on the idea and work can begin, this much loved and important part of our history could soon see a blossoming future.

	Meanwhile, the prison has had a number of issues with it's staff, in July two male staff members were arrested on suspicion of smuggling in prohibited items and in November last year (2018) two former workers were sent to prison themselves after they were found guilty of up to £100,000 worth of electrical equipment from the prison which they later sold online shopping website eBay.

<p>
	Less than a month after police discovered a huge cannabis farm in Lower Broughton, they have come across yet another.
</p>

<p>
	As part of their ongoing attempts to disrupt the supply of drugs in and around the North West of the country, GMP in Salford have discovered another substantial crop that would have otherwise entered the supply chain.
</p>

<p>
	The sophisticated set up was used to nurture the plants in various stages of growth, they will now be bagged as evidence and then later destroyed.
</p>

<p>
	A female was arrested at the scene for further questioning.

<p>
	Graffiti has been sprayed and damage has been done to an iconic veterans shelter in Monton for the second time within a week.
</p>

<p>
	The initials ED and JB were painted across the shelter which not long ago had a £25,000 face-lift thanks to a heritage fund grant.
</p>

<p>
	Alongside the initials are what look to be a phone number.
</p>

<p>
	Salford Council has been quick to act and the Grafitti has now been removed, CCTV is also planned for the area to help combat this kind of mindless behaviour.
</p>

<p>
	If anyone knows who ED &amp; JB are then please get in touch as we would like to give them the fame they crave.
