Daniel Johnson (14/01/1991) of HMP Forest Bank was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to affray, possession of a bladed article and attempted actual bodily harm at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square on Monday 29 July 2019.

Johnson was visiting the Spar store on Piccadilly in the early hours of Saturday 22 June 2019, when instigated an argument with a man and woman that continued to the front door of the shop.

When the man confronted him, Johnson twice lunged at him with a knife that he’d been concealing up his sleeve. Shortly after he became involved in a violent altercation with a second woman.

Following this, he tried to hide the blade before casting it onto the floor when police arrived.

Johnson later claimed to police that he was carrying a knife for protection against a group of men he’d had trouble with in the past, but could not provide an explanation about why the argument started.

Constable Samuel Schofield of GMP’s City of Manchester Division, said:

“It is only by sheer luck and the timely intervention of two security guards that no-one was seriously injured during these altercations.

“The wild lunges Johnson made towards his target could have struck anybody. His despicable behaviour put innocent lives at risk and left bystanders terrified for their safety.

“Johnson must have been aware that CCTV was operating in the area, not to mention the dozens of witnesses that saw this incident unfold in one of the busiest parts of town.

“His disregard for these factors show him to be a dangerous offender who was spoiling for a fight and intent on committing violence.

“We’re pleased he has now been jailed and we hope he uses this time to rectify his behaviour for the future.”

 

At around 1.20am earlier today (Friday 26 July 2019), police were called to reports that a man had been stabbed on Chester Road.

Two men got out of a taxi opposite the Gorse Hill pub on Chester Road and a short time later they were confronted by four males who chased them on foot towards Talbot Road.

A 27-year-old man received a serious stab wound to his back near to the bus stop.

Emergency services attended he was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Two men, aged 21 and 20, and two 17-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They remain in custody for questioning.

Scenes are in place outside the pub and the bus stop where the man was attacked on Chester Road. Enquiries are ongoing.

Detective Inspector Dave Jones, of GMP’s Trafford district, said:

“We currently have four people in custody who will be questioned by officers throughout the day but I’d like to take this opportunity to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

“The man is currently in a life threatening condition and receiving treatment in hospital and we’re doing all we can to support his family.

“I appreciate this happened in the early hours of the morning when the area will have been quite quiet but Chester Road is a main route in and out of the city centre. I would therefore urge any motorists who used this route around the time of the attack and has a dash-cam fitted to their vehicle to please get in touch.

“There will be extra officers in the area throughout the coming days as we progress with our enquiries and we will provide updates as soon as we can.”

It would seem that the warm spell is over (For Now) as the Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rain which they expect to move Northwards from 9am on Saturday until 3pm on Sunday.

Temperatures will see highs of 17c and lows of 14c with winds from the North West of 11 km/h and gusts of 18 km/h. It will be noticeably cloudier and cooler which will come as a welcome relief to most.

Thunderstorms could accompany the rain and some areas could see flash flooding and travel disruption on road and rail networks, although the chance is said to be relatively small.

Drivers should expect difficult driving conditions and are asked to be aware of spray and road flooding.

Hilly areas are most likely to be affected by the rain.

A Met Office spokesman said:

"An area of rain is expected to move slowly and erratically northwestwards across parts of the UK on Saturday and Sunday, and while some places within the warning area may see very little others could see several hours of heavy rain.

"Accumulations of 40-60mm are possible, with perhaps as much as 80-100mm in places, especially over high ground."

The good news is that the hot weather is set to return once more by Monday, it won't be quite as hot as the week we have had but use sun cream and remember to not take pets for walkies during the peak heat hours.

With Salford having one of the worst rates for children’s tooth extractions in Greater Manchester, Salford’s Start Well Communication Group, a collaboration of organisations including NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Salford City Council, has launched the new scheme to help tackle the issue.

The Salford Family Friendly Dental Practice scheme launches on Monday, July 29 and will see participating dental practices pledge to provide appointments at more convenient times for families, such as after school and during school holidays, and allow all family members to register at the same practice. These were some of the barriers disclosed during engagement which took place with parents and children.  

One of the biggest issues revealed by both children and parents was fear and therefore, as part of the scheme, dentists will create at least one child-friendly room including toys, stickers and wall art. Each participating practice will host an annual open day for families to come along, look around and meet the staff to ease fear.

Dr Wan-Ley Yeung, Salford CCG’s Clinical Lead for Children and Young People, said:

The body of the missing 24-year-old Chef from Seedley was found wrapped in plastic on the 9th of July by a group of school children, after being dumped in woodland close to Buile Hill Park. Police now say they think his body was carried to the area rather than been transported in a vehicle.

They have still been unable to identify the location where Hiran was killed. A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of his murder but was later released on bail pending further investigations.

A post-mortem on Mr Chauhan's body failed to determine the cause of death.

Hiran was last seen as he made his way home from work in Manchester on the 2nd of July, he was seen exiting a tram at Langworthy at around 11:31pm but he never made it to his room in a rented house he shared with others.

An appeal has been issued for anyone with footage captures in the Eccles Old Road area on the 9th of July to come forward as it could help police identify the killer.

The incident happened at around 9am when the temperature was a relatively low 21C considering the temperatures would rise even further. Imagine being out in the heat in a fur coat? Dogs can not sweat and so the only way they can lose heat from their bodies is to pant, this is even harder for some breeds who have been selectively bred to have flatter snouts.

The dogs death has prompted animal charities to again warn pet owners to be cautious about exercising their animals during the current heatwave.

A statement from the RSPCA reads,

"This morning we were informed a local dog died of heat stroke after being taken on a walk at 9am when the temperature was 21C.

"The dog was otherwise fit and healthy.

"Despite lots of warnings about the heat we still see dogs being walked to the shops, on the school run, or as soon as owners get in from work.

"We do understand the crucial nature of walking your dog, however please bear in mind that walking in high temperatures can cause serious and irreversible damage, and in some cases death.

"It does not matter if your dog is white, young, not a bull breed or used to the heat. Please be mindful of its needs."

Start to pant excessively

If you suspect your dog has heatstroke...

Take them to a cool, shaded area

Call a vet immediately

Douse them in cool (not cold) water

Keeping your dog safe in hot weather...

Make sure they can always access plenty of fresh water

But don't let them drink too much too quickly or they may throw up

Avoid walks around midday - when it's likely to be the hottest

Avoid strenuous exercise between 11am and 4pm

Move your dog somewhere cold and shaded if they get too hot and sponge cool water on their abdomen, armpits and feet

If you leave them inside, ensure they can access a shaded area

Avoid walking your dog on dark, hot surfaces that absorb sunlight as it will burn their paws

Don't feed your pooch within an hour either side of exercise as this could cause bloating and gastrointestinal problems

If your dog doesn't have much hair, apply sun cream to exposed skin - particularly around their ears

If your dog has a lot of hair, consider trimming its coat to help it cope with the warmer temperatures

Cooling coats are also an option - these are jackets that can be refrigerated and worn by your dog to keep them cool

Breeds that typically overheat include: pugs, bulldogs, greyhounds and any thick pup with thick fur - but any dog can suffer in high temperatures

Mr Leigh has been awarded the honour for his internationally recognised achievements in cinema and his decades-long contribution to popular British culture in representing northern working class voices.

His gritty cinematic style draws on memories and locations from his childhood and captures the reality of everyday working class life.

Chief Executive, Jim Taylor, presented the award at a special council meeting on Wednesday 24 July, he said.

Mr Leigh, grew up in Great Cheetham Street, Broughton where his father was a GP. He attended North Grecian Street Primary School in Lower Broughton, before attending Salford Grammar school.

Famed Salford actor Albert Finney, who also attended Salford Grammar, would later finance Mr Leigh’s first feature film Bleak Moments (1971).

Mr Leigh’s first BBC television film Hard Labour was filmed entirely in Salford in 1973, using memories and locations from his childhood. Vera Drake, highlighting the struggles faced by women seeking illegal abortions, was inspired by his experiences growing up in Salford – and his recent blockbuster Peterloo captures the history of working class struggle for the vote in Salford and Manchester.

Mr Leigh, has a full list of international accolades for his work including five BAFTA awards, two British Independent film awards and a Palme D’Or award in 1996 for Secrets and Lies. In 1993 he won Best director at Cannes for his film Naked. In 1991 he was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Salford.

The heavens are set to light up yet again as the hot weather is set to spark scattered thunderstorms later on Thursday, continuing overnight. These could be severe, yet as spectacular as those on Tuesday night.

Inspectors gave criticism after it emerged staff didn’t know how to protect the children between the 1-4 age group from the ‘potential risk of extremist views and behaviours,’ according to a report published by Ofsted today.

Parents are not encouraged to promote their children's health and well-being, such as through the provision of healthy meals.

They do not fully risk assess incidents to prevent them from recurring. 

 

However there were some positives as Ofsted found that the children’s physical development is supported, and children have access to a ‘well-resourced outdoor learning environment’ which they enjoy playing in.

The nursery also supports the children to understand the importance of brushing their teeth.

In order to improve its rating, the nursery has been told that it must develop staff’s knowledge of the Prevent duty and improve the quality of teaching as well as carry out effective risk assessments and make sure staff are giving children clear guidance on what is expected of them

In honour of these brave men, the Friends of Salford Cemeteries Trust would like to invite members of the public to the 75th anniversary Remembrance Service for the seven man crew and two civilians.

The event will take place at 11:00 am on Sunday the 28th July 2019 at Agecroft Cemetery, Langley Road, Pendlebury, M27 8SS.

The brand new Lancaster had been on a bombing raid on German positions at Cahagnes in Normandy in support of British troops on the ground taking part in the Allied, D-Day invasion of Europe. The attacking force comprised 462 Lancasters, 200 Halifax bombers and 30 Mosquitos but due to cloud covering the target area many were not ordered down through the cloud to bomb at low level and returned to base in Lincolnshire whilst still carrying its full compliment of bombs. Moreover, the returning crews could not ditch their bombs in the English Channel due to all the Allied shipping supplying the invading forces. En-route back home they had to fly in a wide arc via Blackpool.

As it flew over Salford it lost height and crashed on the Irwell riverbank, close to Agecroft Cemetery after clipping the roofs of houses on Regatta Street (above) on the 30th July 1944.

45 year old ARP warden, Mr George Morris and 72 years old Mrs Lucy Bamford, both of Pendleton, it was reported in local news at the time that up to eighty others were injured as a result of the ensuing explosion.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for possible overnight thunderstorms with effect from 18:00 hours this evening until 09:00 hours Wednesday morning.

Update: 01:15 hours and it looks like the storm is heading our way. We may not see the worst of it as it tracks to the south east but we do seem to be in its path.

After a fine evening scattered thundery showers will arrive from the south. There will be the risk of hail and some bursts of heavy rain, but it will become drier by dawn. There is a possibility of localised flooding in some areas so be prepared to swim to the offy for milk.

It will be a stuffy and uncomfortable night ahead with a Minimum temperature of 18 °C.

Tomorrow will see a dry day although rather cloudy at first, but with some good sunny spells developing for the afternoon to give very warm sunshine, especially in the south of the area.

At around 8:12 pm on Monday night (22/07/19) an ambulance was called to the scene a woman in her 60s fell ill during a row and needed to be rushed to hospital where she remains in a critical and life threatening condition.

A spokesperson for GMP said,

"Police were called shortly before 8.10pm on Monday, July 22, to a report of an altercation between two women on Cumbrae Gardens, Salford.

"During the incident, a woman in her 60s fell ill and was taken to hospital where she remains in a life-threatening condition."

The area was taped off for a short while until police finished making enquiries but no arrests were made.

NHS Blood and Transplant and Salford Royal have released the figures to mark the publication of the annual Transplant Activity Report today and Salford Royal has one of the highest numbers of donors in England.

The report reveals there is growing support for organ donation around the country. Nationally, there was a record number of organ donors, with 1,600 people saving lives through deceased organ donation over the last year.

However, the report also shows that across the UK, fewer people died in circumstances where they were able to donate their organs – 225 fewer than in 2017/18. This means it is more important than ever that every person who wants and is able to donate their organs after death, is given the opportunity to do so.

Dr Chris Booth, Clinical Lead for Organ Donation from Salford Royal, said:

“We are very proud at Salford to have supported so many families through the process of organ donation. Each of our donors has given a life changing gift to a transplant recipient somewhere in the UK. Please tell your family that you want to support donation. Letting your family know that you want to save lives will make it much easier if there comes a time when organ donation is a possibility.”

From spring 2020, the law around organ and tissue donation in England is changing. All adults in England will be considered as having agreed to donate their own organs when they die unless they record a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups.

Organ donation is a most precious gift and adults covered by the change will still have a choice whether they want to be an organ donor and their families will still be involved before organ donation goes ahead.

The Summer Reading Challenge is themed ‘Space Chase’, which ties in with the 50^th anniversary of the first moon landing, and encourages 4-11 year olds to borrow and read any six library books over the summer.

Children will team up with futuristic family The Rockets for an exciting space mission as they track down books nabbed by a mischievous band of aliens.

As children read library books for the challenge, they will receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells. By adding these stickers to their collectable mission folders, young readers will help the Rockets solve clues, dodge asteroids and discover the missing books, having lots of fun and adventures along the way.

Children will also receive a special wristband for half price swimming at any Salford Community Leisure pool over the summer holidays and children who complete the challenge returning all six books will receive a free family swimming voucher.

The Salford primary school with the highest percentage of children who finish the Summer Reading Challenge will win a selection of books for their school library. To take part, sign up at any library from now until 21^st September.

Following an urgent public appeal issued hours after the five-week-old puppies were taken, officers from GMP’s City of Manchester Division attended a property in Moston and recovered all six dogs, it was initially thought that seven of the pups had been taken but one had been left behind.

A 40-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and remains in custody for questioning.

The staff cross puppies, who are all safe and well, have now been reunited with their mother, Zena, who is over the moon at their return.

The investigation into the incident – which took place at a flat on Fernclough Road at around 9:30am yesterday – remains ongoing and detectives are keen to speak to anyone with information that can assist.

“This has been a fast paced investigation and I am pleased to be able to say that last night, we attended at an address in Moston and recovered all six puppies.

“The puppies are all safe and well, and have been reunited with their mother, Zena, who was absolutely delighted to see them.

“It has been a huge effort from the team to reunite the puppies with their mother before the worst happened, however our investigation is not finished there and we are keen to speak with anyone who can help us.

At around 9:30am this morning (Saturday 20 July 2019), two men armed with machetes gained entry to a flat on Fernclough Road after following a man inside and attacking him.

Leaving the victim on the floor with defensive wounds to his forearms and hands, the offenders then began their search of the property, looking for any valuables which they could steal.

Not content with the cash, keys and phone which they had taken from the victim, the two men continued their search and came across a litter of five-week-old staff cross puppies and their mother, Zena.

Showing no regard for the safety of the puppies, the two offenders started picking them up and shoving them in carrier bags.

When Zena tried to bravely defend her pups, she was hit in the head with a machete by one of the men, causing a deep laceration.

The offenders then fled the scene.

Both of them are described as black, skinny build, believed to be in their 20s and were wearing dark clothing with the hoods up.

One of the men is believed to be around 6ft 3in – 6ft 4in tall and was wearing a grey and black camouflage face covering.

His accomplice was slightly shorter and wearing a plain black face covering.

Detective Constable Nick Kershaw, of GMP’s City of Manchester Division, said:

“We are urgently appealing for information which will help us locate the puppies which were stolen this morning.

“The dogs are only five-weeks-old and without their mother, they likely won’t survive very long so it is important that anybody with information that can assist, please contacts police as a matter of urgency.

“This was an incredibly callous robbery, where the offenders showed absolutely no regard for the safety of anyone, human or animal, who was present at the time. They only had one thing on their mind, which was to take whatever they could.

“Please help us return these puppies and reunite them with their very sad mother, Zena, who has been left devastated.”

Sonnie Carter (19/04/2000) of Ennerdale Road, Stretford has been charged with Section 18 assault, possession of an offensive weapon and theft of a pedal cycle. 

He appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court yesterday, where he was bailed to appear at Manchester Crown Court on 16 August 2019. 

The 17-year-old boy who was stabbed has since been released from hospital.  

A boy aged 13, two men aged 21 and 28 and a woman, aged 22, who were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder have been released under investigation.  

The charges relate to an incident where officers were called to School Road, Stretford shortly before 1.50pm on Wednesday 17 July 2019 to a report that a boy had been stabbed.

Officers want to speak to three men highlighted in the footage following the attack, which occurred on Richmond Street at around 3.30am on Saturday 13 July 2019.

During the assault, a man punched 18-year-old Gabrielle Walsh unconsious. The victim was on a night out with friend when they attacked.

She was left requiring hospital treatment for an injury to her eye after telling a man who was following her that she was not interested in him.

The offender was accompanied by two other men, who went on to attack 18-year-old Kyle McKeown who she had been out with.

Senior Investigating Officer, Constable Ben Lomax of GMP’s City Centre Division said:

“We have released this shocking footage in the hope it helps us identify those responsible for this appealing and cowardly attack.

“Clearly, there were numerous people who not only witnessed this attack but will have seen the three men hastily departing the scene shortly afterwards.

“Several good Samaritans came to the aid of the victims shortly after this attack, for which we are grateful.

“Imagine if you or a member of your family was subjected to this kind of violence? You would quite rightly hope the perpetrators are caught.

“We want to speak to the three men who are highlighted running from the area shortly after the attack in this footage.

“Do you recognise them or the clothes they are wearing? One in particular has a distinctive way of running. Their clothes, too, are quite distinctive.

“Perhaps you saw three people like this earlier on during that evening, or later in the night. If you know something, please get in touch as soon as possible.”

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday 14 August 2019 having been charged this afternoon with the possession of a firearm.

Shortly after 2pm on Thursday 11 July 2019, officers were called to reports of shots fired close to a Primary School on Liverpool Street.

A 17-year-old boy and two men, aged 18 and 22, were previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Later, a 15-year-old boy and 37-year-old man were also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They have also been bailed pending further enquiries.

Malachy Ward (16/11/1990) was released from prison in June 2019 after being jailed for four years and four months for burglary.

He was released early from prison and remains on licence until 2020. He has now breached the conditions of his licence and the licence has been revoked.

Ward is known to have links to the Salford area of Greater Manchester, as well as Northern Ireland.
