<p>
	A sickening child abuser who set up a global child sex network has been jailed for 10 years 6 months following an investigation by Greater Manchester Police.
</p>

<p>
	Benjamin Lancaster (02/06/1990) of Charles Street in Swinton, Salford, was yesterday jailed for over a decade for rape, possession of indecent images and arranging / facilitating travel for sexual purposes in relation to two victims, who were both under 16 at the time of the offences.
</p>

<p>
	He will also be on the sex offenders' register for life and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
</p>

<p>
	With the self-proclaimed moniker "Daddy Dominant Little Girls" - DDLG - the court heard how Lancaster claimed to be in a polyamorous relationship at the time of the offences.
</p>

<p>
	He would scour the internet for females to be part of the relationship. He would then give them a list of rules that they would need to abide by, including times to go to bed, what they could wear, who they could go out with and which sexual acts they would partake in.
</p>

<p>
	Acting as the dominant and the children as subservient, Lancaster would target children who were extremely vulnerable and promise them a better life - whilst making them call him "Daddy."
</p>

<p>
	Lancaster's sickening activities were discovered when a carer of one of the children checked her online usage and uncovered indecent images and videos between the two.
</p>

<p>
	She raised the alarm and Lancaster was arrested at his home address in October 2021. On analysis of his phone and devices, it was discovered that he was communicating inappropriately with children all over the world.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>DC Emma Puckering of the Salford Connect Team said:</strong>

		</p>

			"We would like to commend the strength and bravery of the victims and their support systems, who have supported the prosecution to conclusion.
		</p>

		<p>
			"We know that the sentencing will never erase what they experienced at the hands of Lancaster, but we hope that it signifies the beginning of the rest of their lives, allowing them to start to heal and come to terms with what's happened.

<p>
	Wilkinson (WILKO) has announce it is to file for administration, a move that could put 12,000 jobs in the U.K. under and see it's 400 stores close for good unless a buyer can be found.
</p>

<p>
	Business advisors PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has been advising Wilkinson's and had already started discussions with prospective financial investors about raising new equity to fund the business through a complex restructuring process.
</p>

<p>
	The chain which has stores within Salford confirmed in January they had made the tough decision to close some existing shops and that the first set of affected stores would shut their doors as early as February.
</p>

<p>
	Multiple Wilko shops have already closed for good with bosses confirming long and expensive leases as one of the reasons why.
</p>

<p>
	In recent months, it has been seeking to finalise a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) – a mechanism that would trigger steep rent cuts at hundreds of stores.
</p>

<p>
	The boss of the homeware and hardware chain said it is expected to enter insolvency after failing to secure a takeover to help the business with "mounting cash pressures".
</p>

<p>
	It has been hit by inflationary pressures and supply chain challenges as well as in recent years, a downturn in footfall due to the pandemic.
</p>

<p>
	The stores in Salford and Eccles currently remain open as usual.

<p>
	There were poignant scenes at Peel Green Cemetery today as 100's of people lined the route to the Chapel, many dressed in their Manchester United tops as Kevin had requested.
</p>

<p>
	A lone piper lead the funeral cortege playing the John Denver classic, "Take Me Home Country Roads" which has been sung on the terraces of Old Trafford for many years with the words, "Take Me Back To Old Trafford".

</p>

<p>
	Along with 100's more I stood outside the Chapel and listened to the service led by Father martin Collins from St Marys R.C. Church which was piped outside to a loudspeaker, inside the Chapel there was standing room only, an indication of how Kevin was loved and admired.
</p>

<p>
	I stood with a few "old school" Reds and tales were told of away matches and the scrapes that Kevin would often get involved, one that happened in a McDonalds in Denmark as United played Brondby F.C.in 1998 is hilarious, and sadly not printable!
</p>

<p>
	In his Eulogy friends spoke of Kevin's childhood and despite being disabled he saw this as no obstacle and often treated it as a challenge, he led a full life, became one of the first computer experts in Eccles and setting up his own computer business and training others, he then set up Porky Pigs Cafe in Peel Green, always on the go.
</p>

<p>
	Kevin despite being small in stature was a giant amongst men in so many ways, his life story should not only be an inspiration to others but made into a book if not a film, so many stories about him, it seems everybody has their own story to tell about him...a true character and Eccles will be a little sadder without him
</p>

<p>
	Finally I would like to doff my cap to all those who attended today, you did him proud, we can't ask for more.

<p>
	A well-known destination store in the heart of Salford, One Stop on Grecian Street, has taken a significant step towards enhancing community safety by installing a life-saving defibrillator outside their store. The new addition comes as a testament to Franchisee Priyesh Ramji Vekaria's commitment to the local community, driven by a ten-year background in emergency services as a police officer.
</p>

<p>
	Priyesh firmly believes that accidents and emergencies can happen to anyone, making it crucial to have accessible life-saving equipment that can be utilised without prior training or knowledge.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Priyesh, the owner of the One Stop franchise store, said:</strong>
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-gramm="false" data-ipsquote="">

		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Priyesh faced various obstacles while pursuing this endeavour, with the cost of a defibrillator being a significant concern. However, he connected with Claire Axon from Minutes Matter – a charity who distribute defibrillators far and wide, making them accessible to all.
</p>

<p>
	Claire's guidance proved invaluable and together they identified the Heart Sign Samaritan Pad 360p Defibrillator as the ideal choice within Priyesh's budget. With the remaining money from the budget, Priyesh contributed £500 directly to Minutes Matter to support their mission.
</p>

<p>
	Looking towards the future, Priyesh has ambitious plans to fund a kit to keep within his personal vehicle, ensuring he can offer emergency assistance when he’s on the road!  Important charities such as Minutes Matter deserve the support of entrepreneurs and One Stop are proud to have Priyesh represent them and be so involved.

<p>
	Reach, the parent company and publisher of news titles such as the Daily Mirror and Daily Express as well as more locally the Manchester Evening News, has reported a 24% drop in first-half adjusted operating profit as a result of Facebook’s move away from news content and a tough market for print advertising.
</p>

<p>
	The company said it would cut costs to improve its performance in the second half, allowing it to maintain profit expectations.
</p>

<p>
	Chief Executive Jim Mullen said digital revenue, which fell 16% to £60.8 million , had been “materially affected” by lower referral traffic, particularly after Facebook deprioritised news content.
</p>

<p>
	Facebook’s decision in April to shut down Instant Articles, a mobile-friendly format that quickly loaded news articles on the Facebook app led to a “significant decrease” in readers referred to its news sites.
</p>

<p>
	However, Mr Mullen claimed Reach's focus on its own customer data was increasing its exposure to directly sold, higher value advertising.
</p>

<p>
	Print revenue declined 2.7% to 217.3 million pounds after cover price increases largely offset advertising declines, the company said. It added that newsprint costs had started to fall, which would help reduce costs in the second half.
</p>

<p>
	Reach said full-year profits for 2023 were expected to be in line with market consensus given cost savings that would mainly boost its financial position in the second half of the year.
</p>

<p>
	Salford Media is not affected by the changes at Facebook as it is ran as a not for profit Community Interest Company (CIC), with any revenue generated being applied to build local news and media within the City as well as support local people and good causes. We have taken great strides to ensure our overall operating costs are the bare minimum required and all of our content is generated by volunteer journalists and photographers.

<p>
	Work to repair a leak on a major gas pipe that runs beneath the A57 Liverpool Road close to the Makro store in Irlam, has been causing huge traffic and travel disruption for residents trying to get both in and out of the area.
</p>

<p>
	Cadent (the UK's largest gas distribution network), had agreed with Salford City Council to undertake the work between the hours of 9.30am to 3.30pm only, but residents say that the temporary traffic lights have become active again from 10pm onwards which has caused huge traffic tailbacks both throughout the night and into the following mornings rush hour traffic.
</p>

<p>
	The company previously claimed that outside these hours, heavy plates would cover the work area, with the traffic lights removed in order to keep traffic flowing but this seems not to be the case.
</p>

<p>
	That particular stretch of the A57 has long been an issue due to it being the only viable way in and out of the area, it does not take a lot to cause congestion but this situation could have easily been avoided had Cadent adhered to the plan agreed with the council.
</p>

<p>
	One resident took to Facebook to describe how it took her an hour and ten minutes to travel between Broadway and Barley Farm.
</p>

<p>
	Another told how the disruption being caused was making people late for work and having a heavy impact on the local businesses in the area.
</p>

<p>
	With others claiming they have disembarked from buses and walked as the traffic was so horrendous it took less time to walk home.
</p>

<p>
	Other residents have claimed that it could put lives in danger in the event that emergency services needed to access the area.
</p>

<p>
	Local councillor for Irlam, Lewis Nelson, has been in contact with council officers, calling Cadent out on what he says is a 'The flagrant disregard' for the residents of Irlam and Cadishead and asking that action be taken against the company to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

<p>
	Cadent said via a press release that the necessary work should be completed within the week but it could be possible that it may extend into the following week if any complications arise.

<p>
	Cadent have been asked for comment.

<p>
	A former Forest Bank officer has been cleared of Murder following a trial at Manchester Crown Court.
</p>

<p>
	The Jury heard how 29-year old heterosexual James Johnson feared he would have been 'raped or sexually assaulted' by his gay friend David Toulson during 40th birthday celebrations at a flat in Salford.
</p>

<p>
	Toulson died from asphyxia, resulting from compression to the neck having been placed in a choke hold by Mr Johnson.
</p>

<p>
	The pair had been out at a 'Bottomless Brunch' in Manchester with two female companions, in the hours before the incident occurred.
</p>

<p>
	The group had retired to a flat owned by Toulson approximately an hour later, Johnson sent a text with his pinned location to 'Tommo' a partner of one of the women, as well as two voice notes, the first of which asked that the police be called to their location as he had become worried, in the second he stated: “I’m not f*****g about, come on.” Unfortunately his plea for help was not taken seriously as it was thought he was acting under the influence of alcohol.
</p>

<p>
	Upon his arrest, Johnson told officers during interviews, that he had taken an amount of white powder which he believed at the time to be cocaine, but later suspected to be Ketamine, become unwell and had gone to visit the bathroom to be sick and that whilst there he believed that Mr Toulson attempted to drag him from the bathroom into the bedroom, believing his intention was to have sex with him.
</p>

<p>
	During a struggle, Johnson 'fearing' he would be raped and in a desperate bid to maintain control of both the situation and his body, he managed to subdue his attacker by manoeuvring him into a 'Guillotine Headlock', which he held until he thought it was safe for him to let go.
</p>

<p>
	Emergency services attended, but Mr Toulson was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
</p>

<p>
	The pathologist concluded that Toulson had died due to asphyxia resulting from compression to the neck.
</p>

<p>
	He also found evidence that he has sustained a significant lump to his head, described as ‘protruding like an egg’.
</p>

<p>
	He told the court that such an injury could only have been caused by ‘blunt force trauma’.
</p>

<p>
	There was also evidence of neck compression, as well as areas of bruising on Mr Toulson’s head and body, which indicated 'possible weapon strikes, bites or blows which suggested that a violent struggle or fight took place.
</p>

<p>
	This morning (31st July) the jury found Mr Johnson not guilty of murder and not guilty of an alternative count of manslaughter.

<p>
	Work has began this morning to repair a leak on a gas pipe that runs beneath the A57 Liverpool Road, Eccles.
</p>

<p>
	The leak has been traced to a section of pipeline that requires engineers to work in the road. But the road will remain open.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Cadent</strong>, which looks after the local gas network, has agreed with <strong>Salford City Council</strong> that it will work between the hours of 9.30am to 3.30pm only.
</p>

<p>
	 During this time, there will be traffic lights to manage the flow of vehicles, both ways.
</p>

<p>
	 Outside these hours, heavy plates will be covered across the work area and the traffic lights removed.
</p>

<p>
	This will keep the road fully open, both ways, although there will be a temporary reduction in the speed limit (from 50mph to 30mph) to facilitate this.
</p>

<p>
	We reported last month on the sad death of Kevin Peek who was a truly remarkable man, who didn't let his physical disabilities hold him back, he could be seen in his wheelchair in many a pub in Eccles playing pool and loving life.
</p>

<p>
	He ran a computer workshop for a while in the old bank in Patricroft and held classes where he taught computer skills, nothing held him back.
</p>

<p>
	Kevin's funeral will be held this Wednesday 2nd August, 11.40am at Peel Green cemetery, Eccles and many will remember Kevin for his fervent support for Manchester United and was a Season Ticket holder for many years and  both loved and admired by both the club and it's fans.
</p>

<p>
	I do hope that plenty of people turn out for this, I shall be there wearing my Manchester United scarf, I'm sure that's what kevin would have wanted.... lets do him proud, he was a local legend and an all-round amazing man.

	Coronation Street star Antony Cotton MBE earned a cash boost for Broughton House Veteran Care Village in Salford when he took part in a celebrity version of the TV quiz show Tipping Point.
</p>

<p>
	Antony, who is an official ambassador of Broughton House, battled it out with chat show host Jonathan Ross and TV presenter and charity campaigner Katie Piper on ITV1’s Tipping Point Lucky Stars in a bid to raise money for their chosen good causes.
</p>

<p>
	After answering questions from host Ben Shephard on topics including politics, music, books and sport, Antony walked away with £2,400 for Broughton House. The episode was screened on Sunday, July 30.

	Residents fear they could be ‘forced out’ of their homes if a new 63-home development in Salford gets the green light.
</p>

<p>
	Plans have been submitted to the city council’s planners which would involve demolishing two semi-detached homes and felling a number of trees.
</p>

<p>
	The 4.5-acre site would be built where the Pendlebury Miners Welfare Club once stood, on land off Temple Drive on the edge of the St Augustine’s Conservation area in Swinton.
</p>

<p>
	As well as bulldozing two homes on Goodwood Drive, several trees on a green parcel of land in front of existing houses will be felled to widen the road if plans are approved.

<p>
	Calls for funding for peatland restoration as affordable homes allocation north of Irlam train station is recommended to be removed from Greater Manchester's Spatial Plan.
</p>

<p>
	A Salford councillor has spoken out after inspectors removed North Irlam from the Places for Everyone Plan.
</p>

<p>
	Places for Everyone is a long-term plan of nine Greater Manchester districts (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan) for jobs, new homes, and sustainable growth. It has been published by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority on behalf of the nine districts.
</p>

<p>
	The plan determines the kind of development that takes place in each borough, maximizing the use of brownfield land and urban spaces while protecting Green Belt land from the risk of unplanned development. It will also ensure all new developments are sustainably integrated into Greater Manchester's transport network or supported by new infrastructure.
</p>

<p>
	Following an additional hearing session held with representatives from Natural England, community organisations, residents and others, the Inspectors are recommending that the proposed North of Irlam Train Station allocation be removed from the plan.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Councillor Mike McCusker, lead member for planning, transport and sustainable development at Salford City Council said: </strong>
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-gramm="false" data-ipsquote="">

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix" data-gramm="false">

		</p>

		<p>
			"We have now received the inspectors' note following the recent hearing sessions addressing peat. We note the findings detailed within the inspectors note, which if approved by the 9 districts will form the basis of a forthcoming consultation on modifications to the spatial plan and look forward to working with Natural England and government more generally to realise the Wetlands Vision.
		</p>

		<p>
			"The response to IN37 will be submitted in line with the inspectors' timetable. However, our initial response is that the recommendations on East of Boothstown and Port Salford Extension are positive in terms of assisting the City in working towards meeting housing need and supporting sustainable growth in Salford and Greater Manchester.
		</p>

		<p>
			"We're disappointed with the inspectors' recommendation that the infrastructure -led North of Irlam Station allocation be removed from the Places for Everyone, particularly as this was based on representations from Natural England who substantially changed their position very late in the examination process, despite having had ample opportunities to make their revised position clear earlier in the process. We will be writing to Natural England to understand their proposals to accelerate peat restoration on Chat Moss, in line with Greater Manchester's overall aims.
		</p>

		<p>
			"We recognise the value of restored peatland, but believe that the prospects for the restoration peatland of the North of Irlam Station allocation are very low if government funding isn't forthcoming. Further, the development of this site could have  generated much needed funding for compensatory restoration in another area of Chat Moss so that it could act as an ecological asset and carbon sink, which would be very unlikely to happen without government funding or the possibility of carbon offsetting funding. This is particularly the case given national government's apparent commitment to continue its austerity agenda with a disproportionate impact on local authorities and its rowing back on the priority being given to tackling climate change in both policy and resource terms.
		</p>

		<p>
			"Additionally we're also acutely aware of the need for a supply of truly affordable housing in this area to help us tackle the homelessness and housing crisis we're facing in Cadishead, Irlam and the City of Salford generally, and we feel this very sustainably located site could have provided a significant number of affordable homes in the most sustainable way, making a positive difference to hundreds of families.
		</p>

		<p>
			"There are 4097 people currently on the housing waiting list and 584 households in temporary accommodation (185 requiring single accommodation and 399 families with 253 of those with 2 or more children)."

<p>
	A Salford drug dealer who conspired to buy and supply class A and B drugs on the encrypted communications platform EncroChat has been jailed.
</p>

<p>
	Christopher Davies (17/05/1994) was sentenced on Thursday 27 July 2023 to 12 years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply class A drugs, two counts – one for heroin and one for cocaine and conspiracy to supply class B drugs, namely amphetamine.
</p>

<p>
	GMP launched an investigation into organised crime and the use of encrypted mobile phone software in the commission of offences.
</p>

<p>
	Encrypted mobile phones, called EncroChat, have been utilised by those involved in serious crime for several years as a way of evading law enforcement and the tactics used to access electronic devices.
</p>

<p>
	Davis, under the username of Wavyfire, had used the encrypted device in his involvement in a conspiracy to supply drugs with a street value of £13.2 million.
</p>

<p>
	The messages from the device show that between 28 March 2020 and 29 May 2020, Wavyfire was involved in the bulk supply of class A drugs, class B drugs and managing the money obtained though the large-scale supply of illicit drugs.
</p>

		</p>

		<p>
			"The amount of cocaine alone was more than 20 times the amount sentencing guidelines provides as an indicative quantity for a category 1 offence. The money moved between them and their customers and suppliers topped £1 million.

		<p>
			"Davis presumed his communications were safe by using an encrypted device, but thanks to our officers we were able to use his words against him."

<p><img src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2023_07/cm.jpg.02a3a4037de469b2c2d72ed9a18c8464.jpg" /></p>
<p>
	Within the last decade alone, the preciously fragile beauty and biodiversity of Barton, Irlam and Cadishead's 10,000 year old moss-lands, have come under an onslaught from the ever increasing approach of both rampant urban development and those who would seek to exploit the wealth to be made from the resources which lie both within the rich fertile peat above and the vast gas reserves below.
</p>

<p>
	Just this week, the latest attempt to build upon what really by all accounts should be considered a protected greenbelt area, has been thankfully thrown out after a review of the local plan for Greater Manchester.
</p>

<p>
	Sadly it took countless hours of work put in by campaigners, local councillors and the areas MP in order to present the facts which helped persuade the planners to drop their plans and change their minds.
</p>

<p>
	Local councillor Lewis Nelson has been campaigning to save the local greenbelt land close to his home since he was a youngster, he cut his teeth protesting 'Fracking' on Barton Moss and was a regular face and a strong and powerful voice, even at such a young age. His passion for protecting our local moss-lands led him to be appointed Salford's wildlife champion and we could not imagine the roll having gone to a better person. His commitment and dedication has been unfaltering and he has often found himself at odds with his former fellow councillors. Nonetheless he continues to speak out and relishes any opportunity to take on those who would see the moss-lands exploited.
</p>

<p>
	For a man who is amongst our youngest councillors, I have seen first hand that he shows a far greater level of maturity and understanding of politics than many of his senior colleagues.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="background-color: #000; color: #ffffff; padding: 5px;">Barton Moss - Former iGas Exploratory Well</span>
</p>

<p>
	Lewis is not alone in this battles, he is fortunate enough to have the full backing of his local MP, <strong>Barbara Keeley</strong>, who has always been a keen environmentalist and campaigner for the protection of the greenbelt areas of Salford. Her persistence in tackling peat extraction upon the moss, played a huge part in the successful ban back in 2012 which thankfully still remains in place to this day. Over the years she has steadfastly given her voice and support to the local wildlife that would otherwise have none.
</p>

<p>
	For Barbara, it is not because she feels 'expected' to speak out as she is an MP, she speaks out because she IS an MP, passionate about the moss-lands within her constituency, she knows full well that her voice carries more weight than many others. She chooses to get her hands dirty and challenge those who would see the greenbelt destroyed, because she genuinely believes it is the right thing to do.
</p>

<p>
	Lewis is now fortunate enough to have colleagues not only within his own area but also neighbouring areas, who share his love of the greenbelt, he is no longer a lone voice shouting at a brick wall.
</p>

<p>
	The fight to save the moss-lands took another political turn, with a challenge from long time campaigner and local legend Darren Goulden, a man who felt so passionate about saving the moss, he created his own political party (CORE) to challenge the Labour stronghold. His election win at the time sent shockwaves through Labour ranks and it is a constant reminder that when people have taken all they can, they hit back and make their voices heard at the ballot boxes. Lewis came close to defeat himself that same year, but his unwavering commitment to protecting the moss-lands saw enough votes to carry him through, and that win allowed him to continue to fight for what he believed in.
</p>

<p>
	This latest pocket of land under threat, a 30 hectare area to the rear of Irlam Station, has been described as being 'degraded', but the now fairly obvious question which should be asked is how and why was it able to become 'degraded' in the first place? Why was the protection seemingly not there to prevent it at the time and will protections be put in place in the future to prevent such environmental destruction happening again?
</p>

<p>
	The land is said to have been degraded due to drainage and peat extraction which means that someone made a lot of money from that process. Maybe they should be the ones footing the bill to restore it to it's former condition?
</p>

<p>
	The land is safe (for now) but it is only a matter of time before another part of our vitally important area of natural beauty and bio-diversity, again comes under threat from the next attempt to exploit it.
</p>

<p>
	These areas need protection that is enshrined in law at the highest levels as we can not continue to expect campaigners to fight endlessly to protect them. The process is lengthy, costly and tiring.
</p>

<p>
	It is with great irony that as parts of Europe burn and our weather becomes more unpredictable due to the unprecedented changes to our environment, there are some who are still attempting to pave paradise and strip away wild natural habitats to make way for concrete jungles.
</p>

<p>
	Without the likes of <strong>Lewis Nelson</strong>, <strong>Barbara Keeley</strong> and <strong>Darren Goulden</strong>, it would no doubt be open day on our local flora and fauna from prospective developers. If it was not for their resolute opposition and powerful voices, we would watch feeling helpless as the glorious beauty of our local wildlife haven is built upon, with row and row of generic cut and paste homes. Homes that many within the area would struggle to afford.
</p>

<p>
	Sometimes when making planning decisions, you have to stand on the edge of a field on a crisp cold morning or a warm humid night and breath in the clean fresh air and let it fill your soul.
</p>

<p>
	We can no longer afford to destroy what is left of our very own area of natural beauty and let it be bought and destroyed for profit.
</p>

<p>
	This past week or so, we sadly laid to rest one of our undoubtedly greatest Salfordian's, former Councillor <strong>Ben Wallsworth MBE</strong>, a man who most certainly left his mark on the map of Salford having redrawn it, a man who understood both the importance and need for balance having overseen the regeneration of former brownfield sites within the city, whilst leaving a legacy of protections put in place for huge swathes of our local landscape.
</p>

<p>
	The greatest honour our city could award a man of such standing is to ensure that the greenbelt land he strived to protect is given the proper protection it needs.
