Launched by Salford City Council the website shows people which benefits they are entitled to and helps them apply for them online or launch appeals.

It brings together job adverts from several major online sites so people can apply directly and log their job search activities quickly and easily and even offers advice on childcare and energy grants.

Councillor Paula Boshell, Deputy City Mayor at Salford City Council, said:

“Many people aren’t claiming benefits they are entitled to and are struggling to make ends meet as a result. The Better Off website allows you to run a quick and simple check to see if there is something you are entitled to and to submit a claim there and then.

“Once you’ve entered your personal information, it will automatically complete parts of forms for you so you don’t have to keep repeating the same details.

Councillor Boshell said anyone who needs help to get online can get support through Salford City Council’s Digital You programme.

One of the areas we will be offering help with is online applications for discretionary housing payment, which is extra money to help pay the rent.

In addition to the website, which was designed by Kirklees Council’s digital technology company and is being taken up by councils across the country, Salford City Council has introduced new scan zones at Gateway centres across the city. The new machines mean people can scan documents, such as those in support of benefits applications and attach them electronically to claims.

Salford City Council is using new legislation, which was introduced in April this year, in a bid to keep the streets clean.

The law now allows the council to fine the keeper of a vehicle £150 if it is has reason to believe any of its occupants have discarded litter.

The new regulations also mean that people seen dropping rubbish can now be fined up to £150 on the spot, almost double the previous charge of £80.

And the council is using legislation to increase the fine for people not cleaning up dog mess. They offence will now cost up to £100.

Signs for both offences will be put up in prominent locations to warn potential offenders.

Councillor David Lancaster, Lead Member for Environment and Community Safety at Salford City Council, said:

“Littering add nearly 250 tonnes of rubbish to our streets each year at the expense of the taxpayer. This money could be better spent on services that really benefit communities.

“The rubbish we collect off the streets is on top of all the litter our amazing community groups and volunteers clean up each year to keep their areas and parks clean.

“Thankfully the new law means we can now target the owners of vehicles whose passengers drop litter. We will continue to tackle those who litter and who do not pick up dog mess.

Updated: The driver has suffered no serious injuries and self rescued.

We are being told that what appears to be a Silver coloured Ford Ka has ended up on its side after an accident on Bentcliffe Way in Eccles this evening (15th Aug).

A report from an unconfirmed witness suggests that the vehicle was involved in a collision with another on the westbound carriageway.

At the moment details are a little unclear but we are told that at least one occupant of the vehicle has been transferred to hospital via ambulance.

We have asked both GMP and GMFRS for more information and will update this article as soon as we have more details.

I just wanted to make this post to keep the memory of Alan (Gadget) very much alive in the public consciousness.

He would have been 51 years old today.

Father-of-two Alan Henning, a taxi driver from Eccles, travelled to the war-torn region with charity workers in December 2013 but was kidnapped and subsequently executed in the most barbaric way possible by Islamic State fundamentalist fighters the following October.

He lived his life helping others in need and was in Syria delivering an ambulance full of medical supplies to refugees at the time he was taken.

An inspiration to us all and a reflection of what it really means to be a Salfordian, he was the best of us.

If you can, raise a glass in remembrance of a local hero this evening.

That’s the message from Salford City Council which is urging residents not to wait until winter and miss an incredible offer.

The Greater Manchester Warm Homes Fund is offering to fully fund fitting a modern gas central heating to 500 households across the region which currently use expensive storage heaters, room heaters or open fires to heat their homes. It's open to homeowners and tenants, with their landlord's permission.

Applications are now open and funding will be awarded on a first come, first served basis until the £1.8 million funding has been allocated.
