As part of plans by Manchester City Council to host a screening of the fixture at Castlefield Bowl in Manchester City Centre, extra officers will also be out in force.

Some of these officers will be working additional hours on top of their normal shift, while others have given up their rest day and time off so they can help police Wednesday’s event for football fans.

GMP has been working with partners and licensed premises throughout this World Cup to help fans across Greater Manchester enjoy the games in good spirits and safe environments.

And for this momentous occasion, there will be a significant number of officers in the city centre in particular.

An increased police presence will also be seen across Greater Manchester’s town centres for those watching the fixture in pubs and bars.

Chief Superintendent Graeme Openshaw, who is in charge of policing during the World Cup, said:

The new system has been running as a pilot for the last six months but now the Force is encouraging people to go online when possible and speak to a specially trained advisor at the click of a button instead of picking up the phone.

In response to public feedback, the Force is encouraging people to use it and the information already available on its website in the lead up to England’s game on Wednesday and ahead of Donald Trump’s visit to the UK on Friday, two events that will put increased pressure on policing.Deputy Chief Constable Ian Pilling said:

“We work really hard to deal with everything that comes into us in the best and most efficient way possible and remain committed to protecting the people of Greater Manchester. However, we need the public to work with us, think before they call and do everything they can to support each other and keep our communities safe.

“This past weekend we saw almost 8,000 calls to 101 and 999 – an unprecedented increase. The hot weather, weekend drinking and the World Cup all play a factor, all of which are set to continue this week with the semi-final on Wednesday. We’re also set for a busy few days at the end of the week with Donald Trump’s visit to the UK.

“Please think before you pick up the phone. Do you really need us? Is the information on our website? Could you talk to us via LiveChat? We’re always here to help anyone who needs us, and always will be, but everyone needs to play their part.”

LiveChat can be used between 8am and midnight to:

	Report a crime

Give police information about their local area

Get an update on a crime they have already reported

Ask an advisor anything police related

It’s been introduced to help meet an ever-increasing demand for services online and sees the Force listen to and work with communities to give them the most efficient service possible. Public feedback during a recent consultation highlighted that more and more people want to be able to access services online.

During the pilot, GMP’s LiveChat saw 14,237 conversations take place for anything from noise complaints and neighbour disputes right up to disclosures of domestic abuse and modern slavery.

The closure is to enable work to take place that will link the new Trafford Park line, currently under construction, with the existing Metrolink network at Pomona.

The line will close for 13 days after the last service on Friday 27 July. This means that there will be no tram services running between Cornbrook and Eccles from Saturday 28 July to Thursday 9 August 2018 (inclusive), while services from Ashton-under-Lyne will terminate at Deansgate-Castlefield.

It will also enable us to work with Metrolink operator KeolisAmey and other partners to carry out additional enhancement works at the same time, reducing the need for future disruption.

The works have been timed to coincide with school summer holidays when, traditionally, fewer people travel on the network. They have also been condensed into a single 13-day closure, preventing disruption over many weekends.

We are working hard to minimise disruption to customers and stakeholders and have taken a number of steps to achieve this. We are keeping media, public and stakeholders updated before, during and after the works and extra staff will also be present in key locations and at key times to answer questions and help people get around.

During the works there will be a full bus replacement operating including additional services during peak times. Please see the section below to find out where you can pick up your replacement bus service.

We are hearing unconfirmed reports of up to seven shots fired at a house in the Patricroft area of Eccles during the early hours of Saturday morning (07/07/18).

Police placed a cordon around Station Road and errected a white tent outside a property at the junction with Armitage Street.

Local residents reported seeing police dogs in the area as well as what appeared to be armed police officers but we are told that they have now since vacated and the operation seems to have been scaled back.

According to sources on social media, the property was empty at the time as the resident was not at home. It is believed that windows were smashed at the same property in another incident earlier in the week.

Greater Manchester Police has joined forces with Cheshire, Merseyside, and the Port of Liverpool Police, with support from the DVSA and Highways England, to create a new, cross-border Commercial Vehicle Unit (CVU).

The North West has seen a 20% increase in commercial vehicle casualties between 2013 and 2015 with heavy goods vehicles being involved in more than 50% of incidents which require a road closure for more than five hours.

Despite this most enforcement action against commercial vehicles happens during daylight hours. The North West CVU will work at all times of the day and will be able to target vehicles which are driven at night and avoid the usual checks.

Working alongside our colleagues in the police we’ll crack down on rogue drivers and operators, making our roads safer for all.”

The giant Bee is a symbol of the difference a year can make in the life of an adopted child and parent. It forms part of Adoption Counts’ anniversary campaign which shares stories from adoptive parents about the life-changing family moments they’ll never forget.

Working closely with talented artist Lois Cordelia, adoptive parents submitted words and phrases about their adoption experiences to help create the Bee design, while enchanting illustrations of family and children cover the Bee in playful scenes.

The Salford-based housing association has signed up to the Make A Stand campaign pledge, which calls for more support for people experiencing domestic abuse.

The campaign was launched by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) in partnership with the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA) and Women’s Aid to encourage housing providers to do more to help victims in their communities.

The initiative encourages housing organisations to pledge to deliver four commitments to provide support to people experiencing domestic abuse.

	The four pledges are:

To put in place and embed a policy to support residents who are experiencing domestic abuse

Complaints about illegal and inconsiderate riders putting people in fear and spoiling the enjoyment of local beauty spots have risen in the last few weeks and Salford City Council says it wants to nip it in the bud. Recent reports on social media include Lower Kersal, Broughton, Pendleton, Albert Park and the new flood basin off Littleton Road.

Now Salford City Council is urging residents to provide the information needed to get the riders off the road by reporting problems to one central point.

Last year a joint operation between Salford City Council and Greater Manchester Police saw 24 illegal bikes confiscated in Little Hulton thanks to public reports of incidents while recently two bikes were confiscated in Pendleton.

Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety, said:

“At the moment complaints can come into the council via a number of routes including local councillors and social media. We need to collect all the reports at one central point, using our anti-social behaviour reporting form and then work at local level to take action. If we can gather that information and build up a picture of what’s happening when and where, we will be in a better position.

“Last year we had numerous complaints from residents in Little Hulton about noise, anti-social behaviour and reckless, dangerous driving of unlicensed bikes.

“Thanks to information from the public and partner organisations and our CCTV cameras we were able to build up detailed knowledge of what was happening when and where and identify the offenders.

“As a result of that, police were able to seize and destroy 24 illegal bikes and any social housing tenants involved were given a clear warning about breach of their tenancy agreement and the threat of eviction.

“Anti-social nuisance from off road bikes has gone down in that area – and I hope by using the same combination of public reports, CTV footage and partner support we can achieve the same success in other areas. Information is key to doing that.”

Councillor Lancaster said the council would also look at whether motorcycle access to green spaces across the city could be restricted without spoiling the enjoyment of legitimate cyclists.

Anyone who has any information about illegal motorbikes, quad bikes or scrambler bikes is asked to report it online using the council’s anti-social behaviour form even if they have already reported it https://contactus.salford.gov.uk/?formtype=ANTISB

Giving Back takes money seized from criminal activity and gives it back to the local community. It gives local residents the power to vote at a public event on which groups and projects should receive the money, in order to help them tackle antisocial behaviour in their neighbourhoods.

So far, GMP has received 130 funding applications from local community groups for the 12 events that have been held across Greater Manchester.

“We recognise the excellent work that’s already being done by local community groups but it’s incredibly rewarding to me and my colleagues to know this work is strengthened by money taken from criminal activity going back to the heart of our communities. The Giving Back initiative provides us with an excellent opportunity to build on this work and support local people to tackle the issues that matter to them, so we can continue to create a happier, healthier and safer place to live, work and enjoy.”

Some of the great projects which have already benefited from Giving Back funding include an art project to improve the look of the local area and discourage graffiti whilst giving young people the chance to work with local artists and improve their creative skills and a local homework club which supports young people with their homework in an enjoyable way as well as providing trips during school holidays for children who would not otherwise have the opportunity.
