<p>
	Today, Monday 19 March 2018, police have received a number of reports of threats made to schools across Greater Manchester.<br><br>
	Specialist officers are working to determine the nature of the reports and are speaking directly with the schools and local authorities.
</p>

<p>
	Although it is thought that there is no risk to the public, the police have a duty to take such threats seriously and so they have launched a full investigation.
</p>

<p>
	More than 400 schools and colleges across the country received an email which claimed a bomb had been planted and would be detonated if cash wasn't handed over.
</p>

<p>
	Police forces in other areas of the UK, including, London, Bristol, Liverpool, Bedfordshire and the North East are among those investigating.
</p>

<p>
	The investigation seems to have come from a number of schools across the UK reporting that they had been sent what appears to be a fake bomb threat email, asking for money.

<p>
	It has become the first council in Greater Manchester to sign a national good practice collection protocol designed to make collecting the vital tax fairer and more effective.
</p>

<p>
	As part of the new way of working, City Mayor Paul Dennett has exempted around 50 care leavers aged 18 to 21 from paying council tax to give them a boost into independence.
</p>

<p>
	He has also stopped the use of bailiffs to collect a debt from residents signed up to the council tax reduction scheme if they fall deeply into arrears. Over 25,700 pensioners and people on the lowest incomes qualify for the council tax reduction scheme.
</p>

<p>
	Instead, anyone in arrears is being invited to sit down with an independent debt advisor and get help to work out a sustainable council tax payment plan and sort out their long-term financial situation.
</p>

<p>
	So far 135 people have been spared a visit from the bailiffs by taking up the ‘coffee and chat’ option. Last year Salford City Council sent nearly 22,000 cases to the bailiffs to recover £1.9 million.
</p>

<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			“We’ve kept the council tax reduction scheme going for three years now. Pensioners may be able to get up to 100% council tax relief while people on the lowest incomes may get up to 85% discount if they qualify.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We’re clear that this is about collecting what is owed to fund vital council services. But we’re equally clear that piling legal fees onto an already unmanageable debt for people who are struggling to pay is not the way forward. We want to help them get onto a sound financial footing as part of our work in tackling poverty.”

	The partnership approach will see the university consolidate development to the north of The Crescent on its campus. This allows the city council and university-owned land and property to be designed and planned in a comprehensive way, opening up sites for a modern, residential environment already surrounded by 25 hectares of historic parkland, riverside and jewels of history such as Peek Hall, the old fire station and Salford Museum and Art Gallery.

	The masterplan, by 5plus Architects, creates a high-quality cultural gateway connecting these historic assets to new development significantly enhancing the visitor draw to the area. <p>
	After a few hours of disruption to daily life along Chapel Street, what was thought to be a WW2 era bomb turns out to not be a WW2 era bomb.
</p>

<p>
	Roads were cordoned off after builders discovered what they thought to be a WW2 era bomb on a building site on chapel street. After a close inspection from the brave men of the Army Bomb Disposal Service, it was determined that it was not a bomb.

<p>
	It is still unknown what it was which aroused suspicions but the old 'better safe than sorry' is always the best course of action in such cases.
</p>

<p>
	Our only concern now is that Chapel Street seems to have moved to Ordsall...

<p>
	City Mayor Paul Dennett has signed a new two-year contract which will see the council use green electricity in all council-owned buildings.
</p>

<p>
	The moves come a month after the council made a formal commitment to the UK100 network to commit to the use of 100 percent clean energy in Salford by 2050.
</p>

<p>
	The city joins over one hundred cities and local authorities across the country who have committed to cut carbon emissions.

We also have solar panels on three schools thanks to funding raised by the community and we have electric cars for use by staff as they travel around the city.
		</p>

		<p>
			“Salford is also the home to the UK’s only city-wide Carbon Literacy Consortium. It is important the clean energy message is spread far and wide across our city and we’re backing the Big Clean Switch campaign to encourage residents to switch to a clean energy supplier.

<p>
	Residents can do their bit too and are encouraged to compare clean electricity tariffs and switch to renewable energy with ease at https://bigcleanswitch.org/gm/ - the average savings so far is over £300 a year.

<p>
	For decades, the Lower Kersal Morris Dancing Troupe has kept young girls off the streets and on to the dance floor to learn the art of morris dancing.
</p>

<p>
	Now the club, which has taught hundreds of youngsters how to dance, has been given a much-needed financial boost by housing association Salix Homes.
</p>

<p>
	Principal Ann Smith has been running the troupe since 1983, with the aim of providing a fun and inexpensive hobby for the children of Salford.
</p>

<p>

<p>
	Now 35 years later the club is still going strong and Ann works with her daughter Joanne Gibson to run the dancing sessions, which are held at St Sebastian’s Community Centre on Wednesdays and St George’s Day Centre on Thursdays.

<p>
	Despite morris dancing having a perception of being a dying art form, Joanne says that couldn’t be further from the truth in Salford.

<p><img src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2018_03/scam.jpg.babe2314721c490632623ab1fc9ed79a.jpg" /></p>

<p>
	Facebook can be an excellent place to pick up a good bargain and it has many local groups that you can visit where they can be found, at other times it can turn into a nightmare, as a string of incidents we have had reported to us over the past week, clearly shows.
</p>

<p>
	Firstly a lady told us how she was conned of £90 after buying a fridge from a seller in Eccles, the item was described as extremely clean, tested and fully functioning, sadly as she was later to find, that was not to be the case.
</p>

<p>
	The freezer was delivered in a van to her home by the seller, who told her not to plug it in right away as the gasses needed to settle, which in all fairness is general advice when buying a fridge freezer and expected.
</p>

<p>
	However, the unit was left to settle for several hours and upon plugging it in, it did not work, it was completely dead.
</p>

<p>
	The lady attempted to contact the seller but was ignored, her husband later managed to get a response whereupon he was told that "the freezer was working when it left the shop."
</p>

<p>
	The pair were left out of pocket and with a whole months shopping left to defrost and spoil.
</p>

<p>
	In another incident, a lady claims that she was sold a sofa from another seller from the same area that quite literally fell apart within a day or so of getting it in her home, upon inspection, it was found that the only thing holding it together was a broken nail and 2 small screws.
</p>

<p>
	The worst part, however, was when she turned her heating on, the radiator behind her warmed up and the house was filled with the stench of urine.
</p>

<p>
	She tried to contact the seller but got no answer and after trying a few times over a period of two days, the phone number was completely disconnected and the Facebook profile deleted.
</p>

<p>
	And in yet another incident a man told us that he bought another leather sofa described as being in perfect condition and almost new from a Broughton group, only to find that it had a huge rip on the back which had attempted to disguise by using tape on the underside. The rip almost went unspotted as it was dark at the time of delivery, fortunately, a security light was activated as they passed and the rip was clearly seen. Had that not happened then it would have been put against a wall in the house and probably gone unnoticed until it was too late.
</p>

<p>
	Upon confronting the man about it, he was met with claims that he had actually done it whilst they were unloading a chair from the van, the seller became quite stroppy and threatening.
</p>

<p>
	Fortunately, the buyer had his two brothers in the property with him and the seller was given his marching orders.
</p>

<p>
	On this occasion, the seller reloaded his van and left empty-handed in double quick time.
</p>

<p>
	The temptation to grab a bargain from social media sites can be great, and in many cases, most people have no problems at all, sadly for some, it does not go to plan and they often end up out of pocket.
</p>

<p>
	It is best advised to always buy from a reputable shop or second-hand dealer, always ask to see the item working beforehand and always ensure you get a receipt for goods purchased.
</p>

<p>
	If you have been a victim of a scam, you should immediately contact the police via 101 and give them as many details as possible, if your item has been delivered, ensure you get the registration number of the van/truck which they used. This can help police trace the scammers and recover your money.
</p>

<p>
	Members of the public should be reminded of the dangers of buying electrical 'white goods' as they can be faulty and untested, which could lead to them causing fires or electrical shock.
</p>

<p>
	We have passed on the information we have to trading standards and will follow up if and when we get a reply.
</p>

<p>
	Staff at the McColl's Convenience Store on Fiddlers Lane in Irlam were subjected to an attack by two men on Friday 2nd March.
</p>

<p>
	The two men entered the shop around 6.15pm; one stayed by the door to keep lookout whilst the other went up to the counter and made threats to staff with a large curved knife, demands were made to empty the money from the tills into a bag.

</div>

<p>
	Both males then ran from the store into Windsor Avenue to a waiting car which was parked in Silver Street facing Windsor Avenue with no lights on.
</p>

<p>
	A third getaway driver was in the driving seat. The two men jumped into the car and it sped off, with no lights on, turning left onto Windsor Avenue towards Silver Street.
</p>

<p>
	Police do not know which way it turned onto Silver Street.
</p>

<p>
	The car was either silver or a light colour.
</p>

<p>
	One male is described as being white, about 5’4” tall, of slim build, wearing a black jacket and black joggers.
</p>

<p>
	He was carrying a Bag for Life (freezer bag).
</p>

<p>
	Were you in the area of Windsor Avenue/Silverdale Avenue/Silver Street around 6.15pm yesterday afternoon? Did you see the two males get into the car?
</p>

<p>
	If you did do you know what make/model car it was and/or can you remember all or part of the registration?
</p>

<p>
	If you can help in any way at all please ring 101 and quote Crime Number 056710f/18.

	A large willow tree fell onto part of the car park of the local health centre in Kersal this morning, prompting a speedy response by police, fire and ambulance who quickly attended the scene.
</p>

<p>
	We were told that a man in his 60's became trapped in his car which after it was hit by the falling tree, fortunately, he has no serious injuries and did not require hospitalisation. Paramedics treated him at the scene.
