Patrick McCann, Harry Allen, Kane Morrison and Anthony Smith all pleaded guilty to conspiring to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Marc Murray and John Kennedy were convicted by a jury of the same offence.

Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, heard how the group fired shots between 5th October 2015 and 10th October 2015 at several addresses as part of ongoing feud with another organised crime group.

The catalyst for the shootings was when their rivals - who were jailed earlier this year for conspiracy offences - fired a shotgun at Morrison’s home address seriously injuring a family member on 10th October 2015.

In retaliation, Morrison, McCann, Allen, Murray, Smith and Kennedy met later that day at Boggart Hole Clough where they were in a possession of a handgun and planned the events that unfolded that evening.

At 10.05pm Morrison and Allen went to an address in Farnworth on a moped before Morrison shot at the home whilst a couple were watching television.

Just over an hour later the same handgun was used to fire at a property in Little Hulton. Thankfully, in both incidents no one was injured.

Officers from GMP’s Major Incident Team uncovered the men’s involvement and trawled through CCTV and phone records to establish their roles in the shootings. They received commendations from the judge for the detailed and thorough investigation.

The men were all convicted at a previous hearing and were sentenced to the following on Monday and Tuesday (9 and 10 October 2017).

Marc Murray (who is shown holding guns bellow) (20/06/1985) of HMP Manchester received 25 years and will have to serve at least 20 before being eligible for parole.

Patrick McCann (29/08/1985) of Chedworth Crescent, Little Hulton was handed 17 years and two months.

Kane Morrison (27/08/1994) of Mossbrook Drive, Little Hulton was jailed for 17 years which also included possession of a phone in prison and possession of a sim card in prison.

John Kennedy (15/08/1973) of Griffiths Close, Salford received 17 years which also included possession with intent to supply amphetamines.

Harry Allen (25/02/1988) of HMP Lancaster Farms received 16 years and 11 months including possession of a phone in prison and malicious communication.

Anthony Smith (16/01/1993) of Cannon Street in Bolton was sentenced to 14 years and three months.

In total they received 107 years and four months in prison.

Alan Maidment (18/11/1976) of Ludlow Avenue, Salford was jailed today, Monday 9 October at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square. He was found guilty of murder after a trial and pleaded guilty to five counts of robbery at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to life in prison with a whole life tariff.

Maidment was also given a six year prison sentence after committing five knifepoint robberies, and a further two years for possession of a bladed weapon. He will serve these sentences concurrently.

On Tuesday 21 March 2017, Maidment walked to a flat on Berry Street in Swinton armed with a knife, after he was told by his ex-girlfriend that she had been assaulted by the man she was lodging with, 47-year-old Thomas Jones.

He knocked on Thomas’ door and as the door was opened, Maidment stabbed him a number of times. He then followed Thomas into the flat where he continued to stab him, even though he believed he was already dead.

Following the attack, Maidment dragged Thomas’ body to the living room where he placed a number of items over the body. He set the items alight using a lighter and pages ripped from an Argos catalogue, before running from the flat.

Just a short distance away from the scene, Maidment became unconvinced that the fire had started properly so searched through a rubbish bin and got an empty milkshake carton.

He then made his way to a nearby petrol station where he emptied pump remnants into the makeshift container.

Armed with the fuel, he returned to the murder scene but the fire service had already responded and were extinguishing the flames.

He sat on a bench opposite the flat and waited, watching fire officers combat the blaze.

He cleaned the knife using the petrol before discarding it along with the victim’s phone, a short distance away. He also threw his outer clothing into some water nearby and went home.

Officers launched an investigation and a man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of Thomas’ murder.

Ten days later on Friday 31 March 2017, Maidment went to a snooker hall where he began drinking and taking cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis.

After consuming the cocktail of drugs, he committed five knifepoint robberies on Coalshaw Green Park in Chadderton in a short, five minute period.

He then went to McDonalds, off Broadway in Chadderton, again armed with a knife, and told staff to contact police, confessing he had committed a murder.

Officers attended and arrested Maidment on suspicion of murder. The two people previously arrested were released without charge.

A post-mortem examination proved Thomas Jones suffered 32 stab wounds to his body including the chest and abdomen.

Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe of GMP’s Major Incident Support Unit, said:

“Alan Maidment is a particularly dangerous individual who was only released from prison on life license in June 2016, after killing another man. He will now spend the rest of his life behind bars to contemplate his actions.

Earlier today, Friday 6 October 2017, Samaun Shah (16/06/1973) of Hornby Road, Stretford was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court to eight years in prison after being found guilty of rape.

On the morning of 4 April 2017, a woman in her 40s was walking to Tesco on Chester Road when she saw Shah lurking around and smoking.

The woman asked him for a cigarette to which he obliged before insisting that she walk with him to Old Trafford Metrolink Station.

The pair walked together along Warwick Road when Shah crossed the road and beckoned the woman into the car park at Warwick House.

When she refused, he dragged her into the car park and raped her.

After being arrested Shah denied his involvement, stating he had been in bed at the time the rape happened.

He continued to deny being there even when shown CCTV footage of him and the woman walking on Chester Road and Warwick Road.

Pay for care-workers in Salford is set to rise to £8.30 an hour, well above the National Minimum Wage.

The move by Salford City Council and NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will bring 300 workers up to more than £17,200 per year – putting their hourly rate well above the National Living Wage.

Workers at the five agencies which are contracted to provide social care in the city will see the increase in their October pay packets. It could mean as much as an 80p an hour increase for some staff.

“This move could see care workers in Salford earning a minimum of £17,000 per year which will mean a significant boost to individual pay packets and give people extra money to spend in our local economy. The money will come from a three year, national government grant to help adult social care cope with unprecedented demand, recruitment and retention of staff after widespread reports of a ‘crisis’ in social-care last year.

Dr Tom Tasker, chair of NHS Salford CCG, said: “Working in social care is about helping people maintain their independence and dignity to live their lives to the fullest by providing personal and practical support.

“The demand for adult social care services is increasing because of the growing number of older people needing care and others living with complex and multiple needs, but being able to recruit and retain staff has been affected by historically low wages.

Vincenzo Tavano (21/09/1984) of Park Lane, Poynton has today, Friday 6 October 2017, been jailed for life, with a minimum term of 17 years, for murder at Manchester Crown Square Court after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing.

At around 7.20pm on Monday 17 April 2017 officers attended a house on Blackburn Street, Trinity and found the body of 61-year-old Giorgio Roncari.

Officers launched a murder investigation and discovered that Giorgio’s Jaguar car was missing.

At 12pm on Thursday 20 April 2017, officers recovered the Jaguar from Chester Street, Manchester and, following examination of CCTV, revealed Tavano had parked the car there at around 4.50am five days earlier, Saturday 15 April 2017.

Around the same time, credit cards belonging to Giorgio were used in online purchases, some of which were collected in stores in Manchester. The purchases were collected by Tavano who was then tracked by CCTV to another store where a further transaction took place using Giorgio’s bank card.

On Tuesday 25 April 2017 Tavano was arrested on suspicion of Giorgio’s murder and despite answering no comment questions in police interview, he then fully admitted his involvement.

He had gone to Giorgio’s flat on Saturday 15 April 2017 but when Giorgio confronted him about the debt he owed him, Tavano grabbed him by the throat and choked him.

The wholly council-owned company provides offices, conference rooms and support to fledgling start-up businesses in MediaCityUK. Since opening in 2013 the Landing has supported the growth of over 540 new digital, media and creative businesses.

The company also provides support and training to local people, with over 100 schoolchildren and 450 Salford residents participating in Digital Skills programs in the past 8 months.

Supporting over 600 jobs a year in Salford and 1,500 jobs across Greater Manchester, The Landing is seen as a critical part of Salford’s success story around the Quays and MediaCityUK, helping to drive forward Salford’s success as a vibrant digital, media and creative ecosystem within Greater Manchester and nationally.

Only this year was Salford named as one of the top five cities within the UK for start-up growth.

In the two years up to 2016, businesses at The Landing generated £13.8m in business investment and contributed almost £83m to the UK economy.

“It’s independent businesses, like those supported at The Landing, which bring fresh perspectives and innovation into our business community and help drive forward industrial and economic growth.

“In the absence of a national industrial strategy that truly seeks to rebalance our economy, the present government offers little in practical support for these businesses in areas like Salford. If we want to see ordinary people moving into business and shaking things up and creating opportunities within our city, it’s vital that the council continues to support projects like The Landing.”

“And with the University of Salford and the UTC@MediaCityUK now well established at The Quays training the next generation in digital, media and creative skills, we’re proud to back The Landing for a further 10 years.”

Salford is already home to the second largest cluster of digital businesses in the UK.

But now the city wants more of its residents to become digitally savvy in a unique and ambitious project.

To celebrate Get Online Week Salford City Council has announced an ambitious plan to get almost 8,000 of the most vulnerable and digitally excluded residents online and confident about using technology within two years.

Good Things Foundation, the UK’s leading digital and social inclusion charity which has supported two million people online to gain digital skills 2010, will work with Salford City Council and says it is the most ambitious local authority digital inclusion plan it has ever seen.

Deputy City Mayor Councillor Paula Boshell said:

“This is one of the biggest challenges we have ever undertaken as a council.

“So much of society is moving online nowadays – from claiming benefits and applying for jobs to cutting bills through finding cheaper deals. There’s also the social side of technology – using it to connect with groups and people to reduce isolation and improve people’s health and wellbeing.

“People who cannot get online, for whatever reason, are missing out on opportunities that could really improve their lives.

“Part of our plan is to find out what the barriers are and tackle them. It’s also about providing free technology in places they go to, as well as investing £100,000 in replacing and upgrading all the IT in our libraries and Gateways over the next year.

“It’s about helping people to get lower cost technology in their own homes, recruiting volunteers to support them and giving them the skills and confidence to reap the rewards of being on the internet.”

“We’re aiming to get some of the most socially excluded people online – everyone from older people who live alone and who have never used a computer to people who have no secure roof over their heads.

"If people can find sustainable jobs, save money and feel happier and healthier, the return on our investment in terms of saving money for public services will be huge – and part of the project will be to try and measure that impact on the local economy.”

Almost 13% of Salford residents say they have never been online compared to 7% of Londoners, while 24% in Salford don’t have the basic digital skills considered essential these days compared to 16% in the capital.

Good Things Foundation, which is based in Sheffield, will work with Salford City Council to build up a network of community centres to act as digital hubs where people can get support. The project will also create a network of volunteers to act as digital champions so it can be self-sustaining after the two years is up.

Salford City Council is also looking to work private sector partners including Barclays, Salford-based TalkTalk, and Lloyds, partners of Good Things Foundation, to provide access to low or even no cost broadband and devices.

Earlier this year the council and Barclays launched Salford Digital Eagles, the first public sector partnership of its kind to help council staff improve their digital skills and support colleagues.

Adam Micklethwaite, Director of Digital Inclusion at Good Things Foundation, said:

“Digital skills and inclusion are fundamental for economic success and social justice, and the programme will provide an important pillar of the council's strategy. As well as helping thousands of Salford residents improve their lives with digital, we'll be creating a movement for change and a sustainable community infrastructure across the city that can continue to support digital inclusion into the future.

“It's a landmark investment from a council with vision, commitment and ambition."
