</p>

<p>
	A few weeks ago a 'Large' Gnome wearing an England shirt was spotted living alone on one of the small concrete islands that sit in the water between Sam Platts and the Hamill office building on Salford Quays.
</p>

<p>
	Shortly afterwards his isolation and loneliness was to come to an end as this modern day Gnomio was joined by his Juliet complete with wedding dress and bouquet.
</p>

<p>
	What a small world it must be as within weeks of moving in they were quickly followed by another little couple looking to make a Gnome on the prestigious Quays.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	It is a baffling mystery as to how these little folks are getting there, why they seem to be heading to that one small island and more interestingly why they all seem to stand and stare at Sam Platts all day.
</p>

<p>
	We contacted Salford Council for a statement but they hung up.
</p>

<p>
	We then contacted Gnomeless Charity Shelter who told us we had misspelled it and they were going to call the police if we continued to harass them.
</p>

<p>
	We then contacted the Gnome high council but they were short on info.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>So we contacted renowned Gnome expert and local Salford History buff Mr Tony Flynn who told us:</strong>

Kinda like Lady Ga Ga or that Dappy fella from Ndubz.
		</p>

		<p>
			It is possible that they are there to fish the waters but I see little evidence of a fishing rod or for that matter any fish after the recent dumping of chemicals into the Irwell.
		</p>

		<p>
			In all likelihood there could be the usual Salford Alien involvement or possibly they have come to the area to take advantage of those *cough 15,000 jobs promised to Salford folks when the Quays was being built.
		</p>

		<p>
			Personally speaking I think its just someone sodding about or possibly witchcraft, the usual stuff for these parts.
		</p>

		<p>
			Now I know they are in the area I will be guarding my underpants draw tonight, thanks for the tip off.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	We headed down to the area and tried to catch up and speak to the Gnomes but the mischievous little folks just ran around singing ha ha ha, he he he, at which point one threatened to 'kick our heads' in so we left.
</p>

<p>
	Eventually we did get to speak to Trafford Council who told us that it would potentially be hard to evict them as they technically are neither in Salford or Trafford their Island is situated on the border of both in Gnomans Land.
</p>

<p>
	So it seems like the mystery of the Gnomes is set to continue as Gnomeone has come forward with any info.
</p>

<p>
	If you know how they got there, have a theory of how they got there or to be frank, just have any idea what on earth is going on then please let us know.
</p>

<p>
	Huge thanks to both Daniel Hulse and <a href="http://www.hamill.uk.com/hq-hamill-at-the-quays/" rel="external nofollow">Hamill at the Quays</a> for the tip off.

</p>

<p>
	Earlier this year, housing association Salix Homes opened The Hive – a new state-of-the-art facility providing much needed accommodation for people aged 18-25.
</p>

<p>
	The centre was launched in May by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who said he’d like to see similar facilities built across the region.
</p>

<p>
	Now the facility on Cromwell Road in Kersal has been named as a finalist in the Affordable Housing Scheme of the Year category in the prestigious 24 Housing Awards.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Speaking at the launch of the scheme, Mr Burnham said</strong>:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix">

		</p>

		<p>
			“I’m very proud to support it, and I would like to see more of this type of development all across Greater Manchester.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Hive is one of the first centres of its kind in Greater Manchester providing modern and affordable accommodation for up to 14 young people while they work, complete their education or training.
</p>

<p>
	The project focuses on supporting young people whose ability to work or study is being hampered by their unsuitable living arrangements – it may be that they are sofa surfing or don’t have a permanent place to live.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Lee Sugden, chief executive at Salix Homes, said</strong>:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">
		Quote
	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix">
		<p>

		</p>

		<p>
			“The Hive is the jewel in the crown for Salix Homes, providing young people not only with a place to call home, but also with an opportunity to transform their lives and build bright futures.
		</p>

		<p>
			“As a nation, we are in the grips of a housing crisis so we are very proud to be leading the way in Salford to provide much-needed affordable accommodation for young people and to be recognised for our efforts in the 24 Housing Awards really is the icing on the cake.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Salix Homes worked alongside contractor Seddon to totally transform and modernise the building, which was once the site of Petrie Court homeless shelter, but has stood empty since closing down in 2014.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Duncan Williams, housing director at Seddon, said</strong>:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">
		Quote
	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix">
		<p>
			“The Hive provides vital support to Salford’s young people, and it’s fantastic to see the scheme being recognised by the housing industry. As a champion of young people, skills and training, we’re honoured to have been part of bringing such a progressive initiative to life.”
		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The facility was named The Hive in honour of Kersal councillor Harry Davies, who passed away last year and was well-known in the community for his commitment to helping others and his passion for beekeeping.
</p>

<p>
	The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Coventry on October 12.

<p>
	Every year the city takes part in International Youth Day on August 11 which recognises all the positive things young people across the world bring to their communities.
</p>

<p>
	And this year, there’s an even bigger programme of 21 events organised by young people for young people and their community.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Councillor Lisa Stone, lead member for children’s and young people’s services, said</strong>:

		</p>

		<p>
			“Alongside that we have a wealth of events from a day for families organised by young people with disabilities, to barbeques, picnics and events to raise contributions for local food banks. Young people will be showing off all they have done with youth groups, their artwork and even their baking skills to make the day fun for other people.

																	<span><span><strong>Multi-award winning playwright David Greig and director Max Webster team up to present Cover My Tracks, a unique production intertwining music and theatre set to captivate audiences in Salford this September.<br><br>

																	As the lead singer-songwriter for the band Noah and the Whale, Charlie Fink sold over a million albums and headlined at notable venues around the world, including a sold-out show at the Royal Albert Hall. He was the producer of Laura Marling’s Mercury Prize nominated album ‘Alas, I Cannot Swim’ and has written and produced music for artists including Charlotte Gainsbourg, Foxes, Rhodes and Eliot Sumner.<br><br>
