<p>
	New Care, owner and operator of Bridgewater Manor on Walkden Road in Worsley, is the first health and social care organisation in the UK to receive the ISO 30415 certification from the Centre of Assessment (cfa) for Human Resource Management – Inclusion and Diversity.
</p>

<p>
	The award-winning care home operator has dedicated six months to achieving this prestigious HR registration, initially starting the process last November.  The first assessment took place in January and then a full assessment was conducted last month, which included a tour of seven New Care facilities over the course of two days and meeting several staff from all 14 homes both physically and via Teams.
</p>

<p>
	The cfa Assessor, John Mulholland, was extremely impressed with his findings, citing that ‘New Care is a well managed, well led organisation demonstrated through a strong leadership team’ and ‘New Care is regarded as a good place to work as a result of good HR policies and practices, where staff feel very well supported.’
</p>

<p>
	New Care was also applauded for investing heavily in sponsoring staff from overseas, providing extensive packages.
</p>

<p>
	Feedback from New Care staff to the assessor was equally as impressive with ‘individual circumstances accommodated’ and ‘a strong sense of inclusion; the organisation employs individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures.’
</p>

<p>
	Staff also reported that there are great opportunities for progression and that New Care continually invests in innovative technology and systems that support the team in consistently delivering high quality standards of care.

<p>
	Making sure that every pound it spends and every major development in the city creates social, economic and environmental benefits to the city has won Salford City Council praise at national level.
</p>

<p>
	The council was highly commended in the Public Sector Leadership category for social value at the Social Value Conference 2023 hosted by the Social Value Portal and the National Social Value Taskforce and sponsored by ProLogis.
</p>

<p>
	The category recognises “a public sector organisation which is leading the way in embedding social value into its culture and processes to make sure the needs of its community are being met.”
</p>

<p>
	In addition to making sure that when it awards contracts for goods and services local people benefit, Salford is also the first council in England to require major developers to include social value commitments through the newly adopted Local Plan.
</p>

<p>
	Councillor Jack Youd, lead member for finance said he was delighted with the commendation.
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-gramm="false" data-ipsquote="">

			“This is national recognition for the pioneering work we are doing in Salford to put social value – as well as value for money – at the heart of all our spending,” he said.
		</p>

		<p>
			“It’s about taking every opportunity we can to get jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities for Salford people, asking suppliers to work with local schools to mentor and support pupils and encouraging them to give back to the city through staff volunteering.  It’s about keeping money in the local economy by using Salford or Greater Manchester based suppliers where possible and promoting the benefits of the real Living Wage.
		</p>

		<p>
			“When developers come to us seeking planning permission for developments of 10 or more houses or non-residential floorspace of 1000 square metres or more we’re asking for a social value action plan as part of their application. We give them information on community needs and strengths, signpost them to organisations and programmes needing support and ask for details of how they will manage the environmental impact of their development to contribute to a greener Salford.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We receive an average of 70 major planning applications every year and have contracts worth £58 million which are due to expire in the next few years so the potential gains to the city from our approach are huge.”

<p>
	A project to help the development of skilful young footballers at Ordsall Leisure Centre in Salford has been boosted by a £190,000 grant.
</p>

<p>
	The cash from the Football Foundation will enable changing rooms for teams and officials to be upgraded and allow league matches to be played on the outdoor artificial pitch at Ordsall Park.
</p>

<p>
	It will also see the sports hall repurposed into a ‘Futsal Hall’. Futsal is a form of football mainly played on a small indoor hard court, marked by lines and does not use boards or walls for the ball to rebound.
</p>

<p>
	The Football Association and the Football Foundation are developing futsal opportunities as a way of introducing younger players to the game and is seen as fast-paced, exciting and ‘a real developer of skills’.
</p>

<p>
	After Salford’s property/regeneration briefing heard details of the Football Foundation’s offer the deputy city mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly agreed to conditions placing a restriction on Salford city council’s freehold titles on Ordsall Leisure Centre as security for the grant for 21 years.
</p>

<p>
	Ordsall Leisure Centre was established in the late 1970s, originally housing a six-court sports hall, changing rooms, two squash courts, indoor bowls and a licensed bar.
</p>

<p>
	Various transformations over the years have seen the building as a home to a permanent elite gymnastics area, a three-court hall, fitness suite, changing rooms and a CrossFit gym.
</p>

<p>
	A full-sized 3G pitch in the adjacent Ordsall Park is managed by Salford Community Leisure from the leisure centre, but has limited changing facilities.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>A report to the briefing said:</strong>

		</p>

		<p>
			“Membership, primarily driven by the fitness suite, has fallen below 100. The decline has been primarily caused by local competition – budget operators and accommodation blocks with their own gyms.”

<p>
	Today (Monday 12 June 2023) Maciej Mikolajczyk (27/11/2004) of Manchester was sentenced to life, with a minimum of 20 years, for murder.
</p>

<p>
	Lilner Netto (31/05/2005) and Benson Jones (08/04/2005), both of Salford, were sentenced to eight years for manslaughter.
</p>

<p>
	The prosecution told the court that Alan <span style="background-color:#ffffff; color:#141414; font-size:19px; text-align:left">Szelugowski</span> was fatally stabbed in Clowes Park on Saturday 29 January 2022.
</p>

<p>
	Knowing that Alan had been arguing with Mikolajczyk, officers started executing warrants less than 24 hours after his body was found.
</p>

<p>
	The warrants resulted in the seizure of a number of objects - including two pairs of trainers, belonging to Mikolajczyk and Jones, found to contain Alan’s blood and mobile phones found to contain telling messages between the three defendants.

			“This was a really violent attack – Alan was found with more than 20 injuries, five of which would have killed him. There is no doubt that this issue could have been resolved without weapons.

	During a recent consultation asking what people thought about Swinton and what sort of future they wanted to see for the town, local people said Swinton needed to be a more vibrant place, with more going on. Swinton Sounds, a brand-new free event, bringing a weekend of pop-up music and entertainment across the town centre, is a direct response to that community ambition - an opportunity to celebrate Swinton, explore the town and experience something new.

<p>
	<strong>Plans have been tabled for 471 homes in the Pendleton area of Salford.</strong>
</p>

<p>
	The scheme is seen as part of the next phase of the regeneration of the area around Clarendon Park.
</p>

<p>
	Included in the scheme are additional tree and vegetation planting, rain gardens, wetlands as well as the provision of two play areas, new play equipment, a multi-use games area and skatepark.
</p>

<p>
	Also proposed are new and enhanced pedestrian and cycle routes and an allotment for community use.
</p>

<p>
	The development will provide a mix of house types and intergenerational living including one and two-bed apartments, alongside two, three, and four-bed homes as well as properties designated to accommodate older people.
</p>

<p>
	Some 30 per cent of properties will be affordable homes for rent and shared ownership and all would be highly energy-efficient, low-carbon homes.
</p>

<p>
	The scheme has been drawn up by a joint venture between SP+ and Lovell Together, a joint venture between Lovell Partnerships and Together Housing Group.

		</p>

		<p>
			“The Pendleton project demonstrates that it is possible to create much-needed homes, have a strong focus on sustainability, and develop a true neighbourhood where residents can fulfil their personal and professional ambitions while having pride in where they live.”
		</p>

	Stantec – previously Barton Willmore – has developed the masterplan for the latest phase, and has been commissioned to provide planning, architecture, and landscape architecture services.

</p>

<p>
	This next phase will go towards the project’s aim of creating more than 2,000 new and refurbished properties in Pendleton. The second phase, known as Spinners Quarter, is currently being delivered by Lovell Together and will see the creation of a new community consisting of 127 energy-efficient and affordable homes.

			I’ve reached halfway through my European cycling challenge, as I approach the border of France having cycled from Lisbon through Spain clocking 1200 miles as of yesterday.
		</p>

		<p>
			I’m still so pleased to be taking on this challenge for two charities that are close to my heart and mean so much to me.
		</p>

		<p>
			My mum was cared for by St Ann’s Hospice by the Hospice@Home Team and at their Little Hulton site. After my mum died in 2017, I almost immediately started bereavement counselling with Hazel Wilcock from the hospice’s Patient and Family Support Team.
		</p>

		<p>
			Hazel was instrumental in helping me through some of the darkest and toughest times of my life. I was devastated to hear she died in 2021 when I tried to get back in touch with her, so I ever since I have wanted to push myself to raise as much money for the hospice in her memory.
		</p>

		<p>
			Another charity I am supporting is the <a href="https://nspa.org.uk/member/jamie-horrocks-trust/?cn-reloaded=1" rel="external nofollow">Jamie Horrocks Trust</a>. Jamie was a friend of mine, we were friends since being teenagers and played football together for over 10 years. He was well loved by everyone in the local area and is sorely missed. The trust was established in February 2015 in memory of Jamie who took his own life in 2013, aged 37.

			I’ve set the target of £5000 to raise, as I attempted this challenge last year but had to drop out as I injured myself and couldn’t continue. I am determined to finish my challenge this time.
		</p>

		<p>
			Taking on this cycling fundraiser again, I want to raise even more to beat last year’s efforts and make myself to do something that’s going to push me far beyond anything I’ve done before!
		</p>

		<p>
			As well as covering over 2000 miles, I’ll be riding up hills that are equivalent to riding up Everest nearly three times – almost 80,000 feet of climbing!
		</p>

		<p>
			I was hoping to cycle at least 130 miles a day, with my target set at 16 days to cycle from Lisbon, down to near Gibraltar and then up through Spain and France before I arrive back in England and up to Manchester.

			I’ve enjoyed cycling through Spain despite the hot weather which I’m sure will continue into France! I’ve been averaging 100 miles a day but hoping to raise that as I get to a flatter route through France.

		<p>
			Both charities mean so much to me, I want to honour both of them with my fundraising. I’ll be forever grateful for St Ann’s Hospice who supported my mum, and on the back of that support she was able to live again for a short period before she died.

		<p>
			Please donate if you can to my <a href="https://www.justgiving.com/page/neil-williamson-2023" rel="external nofollow">JustGiving page</a>, it would be amazing to give as much as possible to the charities that I have such special connections to.

<p>
	Learning how to let go of worries, spend time outside and connect with others to make a difference are just a few positive messages from a new calendar designed to inspire and boost better mental health and wellbeing in Salford.
</p>

<p>
	Launched as part of the 2022-23 annual report by the Director of Public Health and Wellbeing for Salford, Dr Muna Abdel Aziz, the calendar offers information on practical ways to boost health and wellbeing and information on services and resources to help.
</p>

<p>
	Referrals to children’s mental health services and rates of depression in adults were already high even before the pandemic and with the cost of living crisis. The calendar is designed to show people that there is support available.

	<strong>Deputy City Mayor and Lead Member for Adult Services, Health and Wellbeing, Councillor John Merry, said:</strong>

		</p>

		<p>
			“The calendar offers a practical and valuable way to experience the many ways you can improve your mental and physical wellbeing in Salford.
		</p>

		<p>
			“It’s a great resource to support teams, organisations and communities to think about their health and wellbeing, so together we can create a better, fairer, greener, safer, and healthier Salford.”

		<p>
			“People can make pledges such as ‘I will take control of my day-to-day stress and anxiety using the Thrive app’ and other pledges that are linked to campaigns across the city during the year.
		</p>

	A senior councillor and rabbi has called for a concert by Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters at the AO Arena on Saturday to be cancelled amid the international furore over claims the musician is sharing antisemetic views at his shows.
</p>

<p>
	Coun Arnie Saunders has sent an open letter to arena bosses appealing for the gig to be stopped on the grounds that the venue is only two miles from his Kersal and Broughton ward in Salford which has the highest percentage of Jewish voters in the country – 41.5 per cent, according to the 2021 census.
</p>

<p>
	Rock icon Waters has already drawn criticism from Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove and Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer has ‘fully condemned’ him for having ‘clearly espoused antisemitic views’.
</p>

<p>
	Sir Kier has also suggested shows by the former Pink Floyd bassist should be called off – a view echoed by Bury South MP Christian Wakeford.

They received excellent end-of-life care and I was provided with fantastic support from the caring staff. I can’t thank them enough and wanted to give something back.

<p>
	The highly-acclaimed, and hugely popular New Dawn Fades: A Play About Joy Division and Manchester returns, this time with a new production team, cast, and director. A decade after the show debuted, this is a whole new, re-energised, and vibrant staging.
</p>

<p>
	The new touring production is written by Brian Gorman, produced by Nigel Carr and T J Davidson, and directed by Mark Jones for Tin Orb Ltd.
</p>

<p>
	New Dawn Fades: A Play About Joy Division and Manchester is the story of four ordinary lads who, inspired by the punk revolution of 1970s Manchester, came together to form one of the most influential bands of all time, Joy Division.
</p>

<p>
	‘Mr Manchester’ Tony Wilson guides the audience through the heart and soul of both the band and the city, introducing an array of historical figures, including Roman General Julius Agricola, Dr John Dee, Frederich Engels, Pete Shelley, and Buzzcocks!
</p>

<p>
	The result is a spellbinding journey of love, passion, grief, and of course music, drawing inspiration from the enigmatic lyrics of Ian Curtis, with a soundtrack featuring iconic hits of the 1970s UK music scene.
</p>

<p>
	A smash hit when it debuted at the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival in July 2013, New Dawn Fades has toured regularly across the country, playing to capacity audiences and standing ovations.
</p>

<p>
	Both the Bury and Manchester shows feature a Joy Division Exhibition featuring original Joy Division equipment and ephemera courtesy of Chris Hewitt at CH Vintage Audio. Chris also supplied original equipment to Pistol, Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman!

	Caroline Bolton, a civilian member of staff who works in the Child Protection Investigation Unit in Greater Manchester Police South Manchester division has been recognised for her selflessness and bravery as she saved the life of a girl she found on the edge of a bridge above a motorway in February 2023.
</p>

<p>
	Caroline was off duty at the time, on her way home, when she came across a 17-year-old girl who was standing on the wrong side of a bridge in Salford.
</p>

<p>
	The young girl wanted to end her life, but Caroline spent 20 minutes talking to her and reassuring her. When the female agreed to step down, without any regard for her own safety, Caroline leant over and put her arms around the young girl to help her get back over the railings safely.

	Three Greater Manchester councils are teaming up to launch a new service for Jewish job seekers.
</p>

<p>
	Both Bury and Salford City councils currently commission Prestwich-based The Jewel Foundation to provide information, advice and guidance to Jewish residents wanting to boost their employability and vocational skills and household income.
</p>

<p>
	Now Manchester City Council is to join them in jointly commissioning The Jewel Foundation to offer a new service from July 2023. Sessions will be delivered from existing community venues in north Greater Manchester already used by the community.
</p>

<p>
	The joint service will also make links with specialist organisations which can advise the community on financial support and making their homes more energy efficient, as part of its remit to boost household incomes. It is expected to help around 450 people a year with most service users coming from Salford and Bury.
</p>

<p>
	 All three councils and members of the Jewish community were involved in the evaluating the tender for the new service which will help people with their health and wellbeing, confidence, work and vocational skills and career management including self-employment.

<p>
	Greater Manchester Police is this week supporting the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) Child Safety Week (5th – 11th June 2023) to shine a spotlight on some of the dangers children may face in their daily lives.
</p>

<p>
	Regardless of the age of our children, they are the focal point of the family and we want to protect to them at all costs.
</p>

<p>
	In recent years Salford has seen a number of water related incidents which have resulted in tragedy.
</p>

<p>
	Today, GMP are shining a light on the dangers of water. With the weather being so sunny at the moment, there is the temptation to introduce water into your evening and weekend activities, whether this be walking near open water or putting up a paddling pool.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Open water</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Open water is classed as a lake, canal or reservoir and can be found in a lot of the country parks and at the side of walkways across Greater Manchester.
</p>

<p>
	The deep basins of our local ship canal at the Quays, have hidden dangers in the form of strong currents which can drag even the most competent swimmers under the water.
</p>

<p>
	With young children, they should always be accompanied by an adult and kept away from the sides of the waterways, to prevent them slipping into the water.
</p>

<p>
	However, older children, usually young teenagers, are often the ones who are at risk the most when it comes to open water. Attracted by the lure of the water to cool them down when it is hot, they often go with a group of friends.
</p>

<p>
	However, jumping in the water can have huge implications for even the strongest of swimmers.
</p>

<p>
	No matter how hot the sun is, open water is often extremely cold. Cold water shock can kill within 60 seconds. This refers to a range of natural reactions that our bodies take to protect us when we enter cold water – and it doesn’t even have to be icy.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Other things to think about before going in an open body of water include:</strong>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<strong><span style="color:#c0392b;">Lack of safety equipment will mean it will be more difficult to rescue someone if they are in trouble</span></strong>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<strong><span style="color:#c0392b;">The depth of the water – sometimes it may appear shallow but then may drop to a deeper depth</span></strong>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<strong><span style="color:#c0392b;">Underwater objects and hazards may not be visible to the naked eye</span></strong>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<strong><span style="color:#c0392b;">The currents – strong currents make it more difficult to be in control of the swim. This may also not be initially evident</span></strong>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<strong><span style="color:#c0392b;">Water quality – algal blooms are toxic and can make someone extremely ill. There may also be industrial or agricultural pollution in the water</span></strong>
</p>

<p>
	If you are with someone who gets into difficulty in an open body of water, you should immediately dial 999.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Water closer to home</strong>
</p>

<p>
	it’s not just the open water that can be a threat to youngsters – smaller children can face danger in their own back garden.
</p>

<p>
	It’s often a real treat for children when parents prepare a paddling pool for them in the warm weather but there should still be careful considerations given:
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<span style="color:#c0392b;"><strong>Make sure the water is a suitable temperature for your child</strong></span>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<span style="color:#c0392b;"><strong>Never leave them on their own and make sure that they are able to move about safely</strong></span>
</p>

<p style="margin-left: 40px;">
	<span style="color:#c0392b;"><strong>Always empty the paddling pool out when the children are not in it anymore</strong></span>
</p>

<p>
	As well as paddling pools, there are other water dangers lurking in back gardens. If you have a young child and have a pond in your garden, it’s always preferable to fill it in. You could turn it into a sand pit or make sure that it is fenced in or covered if it’s something you want to keep.
</p>

<p>
	You also need to make sure that your child cannot get into your neighbours garden, if they also have a pond and make sure you prevent them getting close to any ponds that may be in your friends’ or family’s gardens.
</p>

<p>
	If you have a hot tub, this should be safely and securely covered when not in use and if you take your children in with you, they should be constantly supervised.
</p>
