	An innovative project in Salford is one of ten projects in Greater Manchester to have been awarded funding through the Innovation Accelerator pilot programme.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Salford City Council through The Landing, working with strategic partners across the city, will support new innovation through research and development, fuelling growth in the city, boosting skills and employment and attracting new investment, businesses and talent – enhancing Salford’s presence on the global map as a centre for innovation.
</p>

<p>
	This project will create a people-centred innovation hub at MediaCity, strengthening Salford and Greater Manchester's digital and creative economy, supporting frontier sectors, and seizing opportunities arising from the new digital era of the metaverse and web3.
</p>

</p>

<p>
	The project will foster exciting new research and development in immersive technologies and their wider applications within entertainment (including film and TV, gaming and esports), arts and culture (including music and performance), retail, education, health, the built environment, industrial processes and manufacturing.
</p>

<p>
	The hub will support businesses to design, develop and test - in an unparalleled environment - new solutions for the emerging metaverse, to drive productivity and economic growth in both physical and virtual worlds, based on a commitment to social good.
</p>

<p>
	The project builds on MediaCity's successes over the last decade as a national centre for digital and creative industries, from broadcasting and media content to gaming and esports, powered by a diverse corporate and SME community at the forefront of delivering the latest in high tech solutions.

<p>
	Residents of a high-rise apartment block at Salford Quays are claiming soaring rents coupled with ‘draconian’ eviction notices are forcing them out.
</p>

<p>
	The tenants of 20-storey The Gateway also list a catalogue of complaints over the lettings company X1 and the building’s management, Haymarket.
</p>

<p>
	These include claims that lifts that are out of order months at a time, easy access to intruders, including rough sleepers and Amazon parcels delivered in a communal area going missing.
</p>

<p>
	One of the residents, Adeola Amosun, is a cancer patient and is having to leave her apartment after claiming her rent was put up to £1,300 per month, from £900.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Adeola told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS):</strong>

		</p>

		<p>
			“There was only security available from 7pm to 7am, leaving the property vulnerable to theft and random people walking in unannounced.
		</p>

		<p>
			“The gym equipment barely worked, rendering it useless.”
		</p>

<p>
	<strong>She claims the lift was also out of service for three months ‘making it extremely difficult for me to get around’.</strong>

			“My own rent has gone up to £1,300, and I was given 48 hours to renew my 12-month contract or be evicted. The customer care has been abysmal.”

</blockquote>

<p>
	X1 Lettings said all section 21 notices are served in line with and according to legal requirements – as and when requested by the landlords.
</p>

<p>
	They added that increases in rent have been the first at X1 The Gateway since launching on the market over two years ago.
</p>

<p>
	Adeola also claims that cladding on the building keeps falling off, leaving netting ‘all over the place’ which affects the view, something that was ‘part of the selling point’.
</p>

<p>
	“We are all sick of how we have been treated,” she said.
</p>

<p>
	John Price, 70, said his rent is due to rise from £755 per month to £900 – a rise of nearly 20pc.
</p>

<p>
	“I am appealing the amount,” he said. “But I don’t hold out any hope of getting it reduced.

<p>
	The cost of school meals in Salford is to remain at the same level as for the last two years after the city council’s cabinet agreed to rescind a planned 10p rise.
</p>

<p>
	A hike in the price was due to take effect on January 4 but a ‘better-than- expected’ revenue settlement from central government has prompted the controlling Labour group to ditch the rise.
</p>

<p>
	Citywide, which provides school meals across Salford, has increased its charge for the service by £70,000, which initially prompted the decision for the increase last July.
</p>

<p>
	But the 10p increase per meal will now be funded by the city council.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Coun Sharmina August, lead member for inclusive economy, anti-poverty and equalities, told the cabinet meeting:</strong>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	She said she was ‘very wary’ of schools out-sourcing school meal services to private providers.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Executive member for education and learning Coun Teresa Pepper echoed her sentiments by saying:</strong>

<p>
	The signs have been exhibited throughout galleries, schools and museums throughout Greater Manchester to great acclaim giving a wonderful snapshot of forgotten and lost streets of Salford.
</p>

<p>
	At present they are stored in Lawrence's home and he has decided it was about time they should be recorded and hopefully they will gain a permanent exhibition space in Salford, his fear is if they are given to a Museum they will be put into storage and never seen again.
</p>

<p>
	Amongst the signs are, Isaac Street, Ordsall where the writer and broadcaster, Alistair Cooke lived My Street, one of the shortest named street in Salford along with Jo Street, Lord Street, Tatton Street, Ellor Street and many more.
</p>

<p>
	It is interesting to see that most of the street signs have the numerical district number of the area of Salford they were in, 3, 5, 6, 7, but for some reason there was no area in Salford with the numbers 1, 2, or 4, Lawrence admits he has no idea but would be very interested in knowing why as would I.
</p>

<p>
	There are no further plans to exhibit the street signs at present but it is good to know that they have documented and photographed for posterity.

</p>

	Boardman Bears Under 11 team won the <span style="background-color:#ffffff; color:#141414; font-size:19px; text-align:left">JINGLA</span> Cup in a thrilling game at Monton Sports Club today by beating Mellor, 7-3.

</div>

<p>
	I will be honest and admit that I know nothing about the game or the rules but from the face off -the action was non stop as both teams showed fighting spirit and determination as they battled away to win the trophy and medals.
</p>

<p>
	The game was played over four 15 minutes sections, with the goals flying in at both ends which made for a great match with the time flying by.
</p>

<p>
	Sadly there could only be one winner and Boardman Bears had the edge on the day and were well deserved winners.
</p>

<p>
	The presentation of the trophy and medals saw scenes of unbridled joy from the girls and it was heartwarming to see them celebrate with glee.
</p>

<p>
	I can heartily recommend the game for any youngster who loves sport and Boardman are crying out for more players off all ages and genders, also they will train you and provide the basic equipment needed, goggles and Lacrosse stick free of charge, how good is that.
</p>

<p>
	We did video the game and highlights which have been included and we will be showing interviews  on our new Saturday Morning sports show, with Rob and David Griffiths the Chairman of Boardman and Eccles Lacrosse Club in which he tells us the fascinating history of the club which was established in 1906 and it's rich Eccles heritage.

</p>

<p>
	The Salford Lads Club was established as a way to provide activities and support for boys in the area who were often from working-class families and may not have had access to organized activities or support systems. The club aimed to provide a positive environment for these young men to develop their social, physical, and mental well-being.
</p>

<p>
	The club was founded by Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, and a group of local businessmen who recognized the need for a place for young men to gather and participate in activities. Initially providing activities such as woodworking, boxing, and cricket, and over time, it has expanded its offerings to include music, drama, and other creative pursuits.
</p>

<p>
	Since then, the club has evolved to encompass both young boys and girls and is just as popular today as it has been throughout its history.
</p>

<p>
	The much needed funding will be put to good use for future generations of Salford Lads and Lasss.

<p><img src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2023_03/eccregen.jpg.0d0980a20726e20c09a2f18fcc75a487.jpg" /></p>
<p>
	Following an announcement in today’s spring budget, Salford City Council is set to receive a boost to its plans to redevelop Eccles town centre, with £5.4million funding contribution.
</p>

<p>
	The funding will come from the new Capital Regeneration Projects initiative announced by the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.
</p>

<p>
	This funding comes after Eccles was turned down for levelling up funding in 2022, despite Salford's townships not receiving national funding from government to date. Eccles narrowly missed out on support last year, but the proposal to reinvigorate the town centre has now been assessed as a high-quality plan and will benefit from the same level of funding that was previously bid for.
</p>

<p>
	The proposal and creation of a new vision for Eccles, developed jointly between Salford City Council, residents, local businesses and stakeholders, is part of the council’s commitment to improving the town centre. This vision is to make Eccles a thriving town centre once again. The recent purchase of Eccles Shopping Centre was the first step in bringing this vision to life and securing a brighter future for the town centre.
</p>

<p>
	The long-term plan will now see the council continuing to work with the local community as well as seeking a development partner to help bring this shared vision to life. The goal is to create a vibrant town centre where people can eat, meet and play. There will be a focus on building a place that celebrates its heritage whilst forging a new future for itself. A place where residents can choose to live and work as well as taking advantage of the town’s connectivity.
</p>

<p>
	Following positive regeneration across other parts of the city the focus of ambition for the city council has now turned to its town centres. Eccles plays an important role in Salford’s future and  needs to experience the same levels of support in order for it to not be left behind.
</p>

<p>
	This sentiment and focus on town centres has been at the forefront of conversations Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett has been having this week at MIPIM. The opportunities that come with a redevelopment of Eccles town centre have been shared on a global stage throughout the City Mayor’s time at the international property conference.

			“It’s no secret that in recent years Eccles, like many other town centres up and down the county, has faced decline. So, today’s announcement in the Spring Budget is welcome and provides much-needed funding for the city. However, it was also much-needed funding last year and, as a team, we were extremely disappointed that Eccles did not receive essential levelling up funding in 2022.
		</p>

		<p>
			"We have always been committed to delivering real, impactful change in Eccles town centre and we have a plan that we are consulting on and will be implementing. This started with our purchase of Eccles Shopping Centre and continues through our engagement with the community, local businesses and stakeholders, whilst also seizing the moment to raise awareness of the future of Eccles town centre through our time at MIPIM.
		</p>

		<p>
			"This is long-overdue funding and I’m glad the town centre is now getting the support it badly needs. It is right that the needs of Eccles and its residents and local businesses have been re-evaluated under the new Capital Regeneration Projects initiative. I’d like to thank the team at the council behind our initial proposal for their dedication and hard work and for not giving up on our commitment to get Eccles the support it rightly deserves.”

<p>
	Salford City Council has announced it will make a £1.6m increase in allowance payments for the dedicated foster carers who work with the council.
</p>

<p>
	The council, it’s Foster for Salford team and the Foster Care Association have worked closely to ensure Salford foster carers are prioritised in the council’s budget decisions, particularly during the current cost of living situation.
</p>

<p>
	Foster carers will receive a substantial increase to their current allowances with a 22 per cent rise in boarding allowances, 17 per cent rise in skills payment, 12 per cent rise in secondary school uniforms and birthday allowance, between 25 to 50 per cent for equipment, and a commitment to pay double allowance for birthdays and festivals, school proms and two weeks payments for introductions. The increase in payments will be made with effect from 1 April.

			"I am pleased to announce that in recognition of the tremendous contribution our Salford foster carers make to the lifelong chances and wellbeing of our children in care, we will this year be investing £1.6 million into foster carer allowances. We recognise the impact of the cost of living crisis on carers and we highly value the care and commitment they show. We’re delighted to go above and beyond the national recommended increase for foster carer payments due to the incredible support we know they give.”

<p>
	Foster carers can help change the lives of children in care, helping them to thrive. Fostering provides children with the structure and support they need to develop important life skills such as independence, responsibility, and self-care.
</p>

<p>
	Like other jobs working with children, fostering isn’t easy but is very rewarding and makes a huge difference to children’s lives.
</p>

<p>
	The council’s Foster for Salford team always welcomes enquiries from people who are interested in fostering. There is a wide range of training and support to foster from courses to mentors and buddies as well as regular professional advice from a dedicated social worker.

<p>
	Today we visited St Andrews Church in Eccles to have a look at the sterling work being done by Salford Foodbanks in the local area supplying families with much needed food and other essentials from their Foodbank and to drop off some money for them which was kindly raised by Glenn Kennedy who donated his fee for family tree research to our foodbank appeal.
</p>

<p>
	The Foodbank is open twice a week, Monday from 1pm -3pm and Thursday from 10am -12pm, I must stress that you have to be referred there from the Citizens Advice, Eccles Gateway or a similar body who give out vouchers which you swap for food.
</p>

<p>
	You can have two large bags of food which contains, cereal, tinned foods, rice, pasta, sauces, teabags which should feed a family for three days as well as this there are other items you can have including soap, toothpaste, tampons, shower gel, and miscellaneous tins of food and spices.
</p>

<p>
	The vouchers are given three times every six months, however service users can use other local Foodbanks such as Mustard Tree, Loaves and Fishes as well as this one which you can join for a few pound and select the items you want.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The volunteers Carolyn and Jane told me that they serve around 20 families, twice a week, the food is mainly donated in baskets they leave at local supermarkets including Tesco and Morrisons, the other food is from Salford Foodbank based on Kansas Avenue, Salford.
</p>

<p>
	Whilst we were there one service user who wished to remain anonymous told us:

		</p>

		<p>
			It is truly a life saver for me and I can't thank these people enough"

<p>
	As well as the Foodbank there is a member of staff from The Citizens Advice Bureau on hand to guide users through the minefield of applying for Benefits and general advice, tea and coffee is available and spaced where you can chat and relax.
</p>

<p>
	Personally speaking I was humbled to see the good work these people do helping the less fortunate with a smile on their faces and kind words for the users and they are volunteers remember.
</p>

<p>
	Finally I must say a word about the Church which has a fascinating history and superb stained glass windows by Charles Eamer Kempe one of the greatest Victorian designers of stained glass, call in you won't be disappointed and why not drop off a few tins of food or toiletries and help these good people out.

<p><img src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2023_03/gmp9292.jpg.c83e7367792d8da071b2644a9e93936a.jpg" /></p>
<p>
	<strong>Greater Manchester Police (GMP) says that it is working shoulder-to-shoulder with partners and the local authority to prevent and detect serious and violent crime in Salford.</strong>
</p>

<p>
	In light of recent incidents in the area since January 2023, GMP has stepped up the policing response to demonstrate that violence will not be tolerated. Part of this involves improving the investigative approach and securing the best outcomes for victims of serious violence.
</p>

<p>
	On 13 January 2023, following reports of a stabbing detectives from Salford worked tirelessly, pursuing multiple complex lines of enquiry which resulted in the charge and remand of Kaden Worthington (02/01/03) of no fixed abode with attempted murder.
</p>

<p>
	Salford Detectives are also utilising new and innovative investigation techniques to identify suspects at the earliest opportunity to bring offenders to justice. In relation to a report of a stabbing on 24 January 2023, officers acted swiftly and arrested a suspect within hours of the incident occurring. Following an intensive investigation by detectives - supported by Force Specialists - the suspect was charged and remanded to court with an offence of attempted murder.
</p>

<p>
	Since 24 January 2023, police in Salford have also been using overt and covert policing tactics as well as stop and search powers where appropriate to prevent serious violence, find weapons and apprehend those carrying weapons.
</p>

<p>
	Additional uniformed officers have been deployed across Salford and across the force more widely to deter offenders and provide reassurance to the local community. These officers are supported by plain clothes officers who work proactively to detect criminal activity.
</p>

<p>
	Chief Superintendent Anthony Creely of GMP Salford Division said: “Every life lost to serious violence and knife crime is a tragedy and GMP Salford is committed to preventing and reducing this type of crime and making communities safer.
</p>

<p>
	“Officers are ramping up efforts to crackdown on the issue and are working closely with GMP’s dedicated team tackling serious violence and knife crime – Operation Venture – as well as drawing on other specialist resources from across the force.
</p>

<p>
	“Within the first few months of this year, several significant arrests have been made and a number of weapons seized, which will go some way to keeping communities safe.
</p>

<p>
	“There has been an increase of stop and search within Salford since the start of the year, which is an important and effective policing tactic used to keep the public safe. Officers ensure that all searches are carried out in a lawful and ethical manner.
</p>

<p>
	“GMP also regularly provides enhanced support to investigation teams from Force Subject Matter Experts and Specialist Investigators to achieve the best possible outcome for victims.
</p>

<p>
	"Whilst policing has an important part to play in tackling knife crime, we cannot however enforce our way out of the problem. Communities need to come together and if you know someone is carrying a knife, please challenge that behaviour.
</p>

<p>
	“And of course, if you see an incident, you must report it to the police. You can make a report either via the LiveChat function on GMP's website (www.gmp.police.uk) or calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.”
</p>

<p>
	Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers also have a dedicated website which enables 11 – 17-year-olds to pass on information anonymously – this can be accessed through Fearless.org

	A collaboration between Xinhua Chinese Association, Salford City Council and the British Dragon Boat Racing Association (BDA) will create an unmissable two-day event. The first day, Saturday 17 June will see amateur racers taking to the water, with more experienced teams competing on the second day, Sunday 18 June.
</p>

<p>
	Dragon Boat Racing is a fun-filled, adrenaline pumping, water sports activity, which originated in China around 2300 years ago. It has taken place at Salford Quays for the last decade, and this year it is set to be bigger and better than ever before.
</p>

<p>
	The event is open to teams and competitors aged 16 and over, and for those spectating, it is a chance to support the teams racing and engage with Chinese culture. There will be spectacular cultural performances, including tai chi and kung fu and lessons in Chinese calligraphy.
</p>

<p>
	The launch of the UK Chinese Dragon Boat Festival 2023 and Memorandum of Understanding signing was held 9 March at The Lowry, opposite Huron Basin, where the event will be held in June. Representatives of the Parties signed an agreement to work collaboratively to make this year’s UK Chinese Dragon Boat Festival even more successful than previous years.

		</p>

		<p>
			“The Ombudsman was expected to announce before the end of March whether the women should be compensated and if so, how. Over 5,000 1950s women in our area may be due some compensation. However it appears that the Ombudsman's reasoning is severely flawed in his assessment of the injustice that women have suffered. This would affect the amount of any compensation that might be recommended. Our fellow campaigners at the Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign have therefore started legal action to challenge the Ombudsman via a Judicial Review. We fully support this action and will continue to campaign for fair and fast compensation.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We will be celebrating International Women’s Day by making sure as many women as possible are in touch with the WASPI campaign so they can find out if they are affected by the Ombudsman’s ruling.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We will be giving out a tea bag with our leaflet so when women get home they can have a well-deserved cup of tea, read our leaflet and visit the WASPI Campaign website to find out out all they need to know.”

<p>
	Tenants in Knowsley and Salford who are struggling with the cost of living are getting a helping hand from their landlord to make their house feel more like home.
</p>

<p>
	Progressive landlord ForHousing, which owns and manages more than 24,000 homes across the North West, has been running its Tenant Welfare Fund for the past six years.
</p>

<p>
	In light of the cost-of-living crisis, the landlord has recently almost doubled the funding pot from £11,000 to £21,000 to help more people.
</p>

<p>
	Over the past 12 months, the fund has benefitted more than 100 ForHousing tenants, including 55 people in Knowsley and another 50 in Salford.
</p>

<p>
	The funding is given out to people as grants of up to £350 to provide extra support, depending on what each person or family needs. That could be essentials such as furniture, white goods for tenants in a new home or even paying for a bus pass – which made all the difference for one mum who was struggling.
</p>

<p>
	Now tenants like Paul, 59, who had been homeless for much of his life until now, are able to look forward to the year ahead with new hope.
</p>

</p>

<p>
	Born and raised in Liverpool, Paul first became homeless at the age of 16. Since then, he has struggled with his mental health and has moved from place to place, often sleeping rough on the streets or sometimes in a tent.
</p>

<p>
	Paul recently moved into Jackson Gardens, ForHousing’s state-of-the-art Extra Care facility in Stockbridge Village which provides expert support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
</p>

<p>
	Thanks to a £350 grant from the Tenant Welfare Fund which was used to buy a cooker, bed, bedding, TV, toaster and more, Paul now has a fully equipped flat with everything he needs.

		<p>
			“I don’t have much and was ready to sleep on the floor before I got my new bed – now I can get a good night’s sleep for the first time in a long time, and it’s helped my energy levels.
		</p>

		<p>
			“Having a new TV has helped pass the time when I want to relax in my new home. The funding has really helped me, and I’d like to thank the staff at Jackson Gardens for all their support.”

<p>
	The Tenant Welfare Fund is open to all ForHousing tenants, and the team running the fund has made a point of ensuring the process is as simple as possible to ensure help can get to those that need it quickly.

			“These small grants provide a lifeline to tenants like Paul that may be struggling to make ends meet.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We understand the very real pressure many tenants are under to get by at the moment. Increasing the Tenant Welfare Fund is just one of the ways we are supporting tenants in the wake of the cost-of-living crisis as part of our wider commitment to improving people’s lives.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We would urge any ForHousing tenant who is worried about their finances to get in touch with us and we’ll do all we can to help.”

<p>
	ForHousing also offers a LiveWell fund to all tenants in Salford, Oldham, Knowsley and Fylde who need help to meet a short-term need. For example, £90,000 of funding has been used to provide around 1,250 people with food parcels, essential furniture and help to pay energy bills so they can keep warm.
</p>

<p>
	Launched last April, the fund has also paid for two new money advisors to give tenants support, helped local charity Mustard Tree to support people into employment and funded free counselling through emotional wellbeing charity Talk, Listen, Change.
</p>

<p>
	And in Knowsley, a partnership between Knowsley Council saw the landlord secure £10,000 from the Knowsley Better Together Hardship Fund to offer practical items, advice and support. ForHousing matched the funding, bringing the package of support to £20,000.
</p>

<p>
	ForHousing is committed to helping tenants keep a roof over their heads. In 2021/2022, more than 400 tenants were supported to successfully stay in their homes thanks to advice from the landlord’s income team on how to access benefits, securing more than £1.6m in extra money for individual tenants. The income team also made more than 20,000 calls to provide support to tenants with their rent payments that year.
