<p>
	<strong>Salford is leading the way in helping children and families have the best start in life in a new scheme.</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Salford City Council has been chosen to be one of 14 trailblazer areas to receive funding from the government’s Family Hubs Transformation Fund. Salford’s great work will highlight what can be done in other areas to improve services for families, so these can be rolled out more widely across the country.
</p>

<p>
	Salford already has four Family Hubs, so the new funding will help with providing more services and expanding existing ones.
</p>

<p>
	In total, 75 areas will receive a share of investment up to 2025, with the hubs offering support from pregnancy through to age 19, or up to 25 for children with special education needs and disabilities.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Councillor Jim Cammell, Lead Member for Children’s and Young People’s Services, said:</strong>
</p>

			“We’re really pleased to have been selected as one of the trailblazer sites. A lot of work has already been done to set up Family Hubs in Salford and this new funding will help us expand and increase the amount of services and support we can give to people in Salford. We want to help improve the wellbeing of families, their life chances and the skills they need for good lifelong physical and emotional health.”
		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Family Hubs offer early support to families to help them overcome difficulties and build strong relationships.
</p>

<p>
	Research shows strong, supportive families make for more stable communities and happier individuals. Investing in families and making sure they get the support they need from birth through to adulthood helps with children’s educational attainment, wellbeing and life chances.
</p>

<p>
	Hubs will also bring together wider services that can make a huge difference to people who need extra support – such as  strengthening family relationships and navigating services.
</p>

<p>
	Parents will also be able to access a range of support through the hubs from midwifery, mental health support and health visiting to infant feeding advice. Hubs will also provide early language and communication development for young children to set the foundations for lifelong learning and prepare them for school at age five.
</p>

<p>
	The early years are vital for children’s development and early language and communication skills. Start for Life services will help parents to form those secure lifelong bonds with their babies and children; and family hubs will provide advice and support to parents to encourage them to chat, play and read with their children to support early development.

<p>
	I was reminded of my days working at the SalfordOnline office when we based on Bright Road, Eccles sat in a room with no windows, writing up news stories and finding our feet with the help of trainee journalists from Salford University who came to us looking for work experience, and we certainly needed their help.
</p>

<p>
	I must have "worked" with about a dozen would be hacks and it soon became apparent who would make it in this murky profession, the ones' who always managed to cover a story without prompting and could, compose a readable finished article in time.
</p>

<p>
	SalfordOnline folded in 2016 and hopefully we helped provide a platform for those with higher aspirations, to move onto bigger, better and paid jobs, basically anywhere but SOL!
</p>

<p>
	Three of those stalwart chaps who did go onto make it as they say, still keep in touch with me and no, I don't owe them money, and I was reminded of them when today when <strong>Clive Hammond</strong> who at present is a Journalist at The Daily Express in London, sent me an article that he had written about Ernest Shackleton the Polar explorer, as today is his birthday, Ernest's not Clive, and here is a <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/news/history/1735223/ernest-shackleton-grandaughter-alexandra-legacy-endurance-spt?fbclid=IwAR3tsEn_O0XTrJLNhf10F209tEVfyhU1yB5vDM6OPyrniHIc57V9JAcPmnw" rel="external nofollow">link</a> to it...
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Clive recalled his memories of working at Salford Online:</strong>
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-gramm="false" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">
		Quote
	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix" data-gramm="false">

			So I'm a senior investigative reporter at Express.co.uk, dealing in long-read articles as well as working freelance for the BBC Radio 4 and World Service these days.
		</p>

		<p>
			SalfordOnline not only introduced me to the power of local communities, but the power and importance of local journalism.
		</p>

		<p>
			It helps provide a voice to those who so often feel alone and isolated while offering a community for people to be genuinely involved in.
		</p>

		<p>
			As a writer from Southampton trying to make my way in Salford I was blessed that so many people I met helped me on my way, not least Tony Flynn, who supported my endeavours with freebies, new friends and a faultless attitude to help me on my way.
		</p>

		<p>
			I learned how to craft a story, interview and most importantly write, something which has stood me in good stead for the years since I worked there.
		</p>

		<p>
			Oh, and working as a court reporter back on my hometown rag, the Salford beat taught me that not every crook is a criminal.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	And moving swiftly on, the next chap who cut his teeth with us, is <strong>Dan MCLaughlin</strong> who now works as an award winning Podcast Editor of Laudable, looking after the niche and community podcasts for <strong>Reach plc</strong>, based at the <strong>Manchester Evening News</strong>.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>I asked Dan for his printable memories of SalfordOnline, he said:</strong>
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-gramm="false" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">
		Quote
	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix" data-gramm="false">
		<p>
			“I simply wouldn’t be doing what I am doing now without Salford Online you have Tony Flynn and Tom Rodgers to blame! It offered the perfect training ground as a journalist to report on the real stories that are impacting communities. And it is perhaps no surprise that it’s my job now to do the exact same - albeit in podcast form. From council meetings to co-ops, the theatre to real life stories, Salford Online illustrated to me how extraordinary so-called ordinary people are. And it cemented my status as an adopted Salfordian.
		</p>

		<p>
			"I am proud of this city, and in particular its people, and it was a pleasure to meet them, and hear their wonderful tales and anecdotes along the way. Salford Online supported up-and-coming journalists, especially students at Salford University, giving them the chance to report on the important issues impacting the lives of our residents. I am a Salfordian and proud. I am Salford Online and proud.
		</p>

		<p>
			"Tony Flynn definitely owes me a pint for sharing these kind words.”
		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	As you can see both men are drunk I am happy to say...
</p>

<p>
	Finally, <strong>Liam Thorp</strong> who is know the award winning Political Editor on The Liverpool Echo, also worked at SalfordOnline and shared a desk amongst other thing with me, Liam was a very likeable person as was/are Dan and Clive and look back at those heady days with a wry smile and fond memories.
</p>

<p>
	This to me just shows the importance of young journalists learning their craft at ground zero, the streets of Salford and Eccles, and nothing would give me greater pleasure if somehow salford.media could obtain permanent premises and we could once again take on new blood and see what new, talent is out there... watch this space things are about to change.

<p>
	<a href="https://www.salfordcreditunion.com/" rel="external nofollow">Salford Credit Union</a> has united with other credit unions across Greater Manchester in response to the ongoing affordability crisis caused by rising household costs.
</p>

<p>
	The credit union is part of the Sound Pound consortium, which has unveiled a new loan backed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and launched today (15 February) by the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.
</p>

<p>
	The <a href="https://soundpound.co.uk/" rel="external nofollow">Sound Pound</a> loan provides a safe solution for local people who are experiencing squeezed finances due to rising household costs. The city region is unique as it is currently the only consortium of credit unions in the UK which has launched a loan product in response to the cost-of-living crisis.
</p>

<p>
	According to Greater Manchester Residents Survey, a quarter (24%) of Greater Manchester residents are seeking information or support for the first time, reinforcing how the cost of living crisis is bringing financial concerns to those not traditionally experiencing them.
</p>

<p>
	With deep roots in the communities they serve, credit unions provide a positive and safe solution to short-term credit pressures as they encourage saving alongside loan repayments and always act in the customer’s best interests for the long term.
</p>

<p>
	Any money made by a credit union is invested back into the running of the credit union and the local area allowing them to offer fair rates to all their customers.
</p>

<p>
	The new Sound Pound loan is available for any amount between £200 and £1000 and is open to anyone with squeezed finances that are new to Credit Unions.

<p>
	Producer Runaway Entertainment is delighted to announce that the critically acclaimed, smash hit, supernatural thriller 2:22 - A Ghost Story will embark on an extensive UK-wide tour that includes a week-long run at The Lowry, Salford, opening on Halloween!
</p>

<p>
	2:22 is written by award-winning writer Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcast The Battersea Poltergeist, and is directed by Matthew Dunster and Isabel Marr; it’s an adrenaline-filled night where secrets emerge and ghosts may or may not appear…

	<strong>“THERE’S SOMETHING IN OUR HOUSE. I HEAR IT EVERY NIGHT, AT THE SAME TIME"</strong>

	Jenny believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben. Can the dead really walk again? Belief and scepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening, and that something is getting closer, so they’re going to stay up... until 2:22... and then they’ll know.
</p>

<p>
	2:22 - A Ghost Story features set design by Anna Fleischle, costume design by Cindy Lin, lighting design by Lucy Carter, sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph Sound and illusions by Chris Fisher. Casting by Matilda James.

	2:22 - A Ghost Story is produced by Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons for Runaway Entertainment, Isobel David and Kater Gordon
</p>

<p>
	The UK tour, which launches in Bath in September 2023, is announced following the opening at the Lyric Theatre in London last week. This is the fourth transfer and fifth West End season for the show. Going from strength to strength, the Lyric is the biggest house the production has played in to date and the tour will bring the buzz, chills and excitement to audiences all over the UK.
</p>

<p>
	The production began its life last summer 2021 at the Noel Coward Theatre starring Lily Allen, Julia Chan, Hadley Fraser and Jake Wood. It then transferred to the Gielgud Theatre for 10 weeks from 4 December 2021. The production there starring Stephanie Beatriz, James Buckley, Elliot Cowan and Giovanna Fletcher completed its run on 12 February 2022. For the first season at the Criterion (May - September 2022) the cast was Tom Felton, Mandip GIll, Sam Swainsbury and Beatriz Romilly. In late September Laura Whitmore, Matt Willis, Felix Scott and Tamsin Carroll took over.

	A Greater Manchester police officer who pleaded guilty to making and possessing indecent images of children has been sacked.
</p>

<p>
	Thomas Woods was dismissed without notice by Chief Constable Stephen Watson at the misconduct hearing at Force Headquarters on 14 February 2023.
</p>

<p>
	The former officer, who didn't attend the hearing, will also be placed on the College of Policing Barred List.
</p>

<p>
	Woods was a serving police officer in GMP’s Salford district when he was arrested in December 2021.
</p>

<p>
	After receiving information about potential indecent images, officers attended his home address and seized two phones and a laptop.
</p>

<p>
	Following extensive forensic examination, police recovered over 1,000 indecent images, many of which showed sexual acts involving children, over a 10-year period.
</p>

<p>
	Woods made no comment in interview but went on to plead guilty to the offences at court.
</p>

<p>
	He was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on 28 July 2022 for being in possession of Indecent Images of children, making indecent images, possessing prohibited Images of children and possession of extreme pornographic images.
</p>

<p>
	He was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment, suspended for 24 months, given a rehabilitation activity requirement, an unpaid work requirement, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years and must sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
</p>

<p>
	He was also ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.

	Here at Salford.Media we are always happy to promote new businesses in Salford, and when we heard about <strong>The O.G Kitchen</strong>, we just had to call in and see what all the fuss was about.
</p>

<p>
	Two Salford lads, <strong>Callum Farrington</strong> and <strong>Jordan Henderson</strong> have pooled their talents and set up their own business, ran incredibly enough from a fully fitted, commercial kitchen at the rear of Jordan's home.

	In their first week the boys prepared 70 Sunday Roasts and delivered them all in one day!, plus food orders coming in all week and that figure is growing such is their popularity, why cook your own when these boys will do it for you and drop off at your door?

</p>

<p>
	A man was found with a stab wound to his neck and sustained heavy blood loss.
</p>

<p>
	Witnesses reported there were two offenders, on electric bikes, who were both wearing balaclavas. They had verbally engaged with the victim moments before the attack.
</p>

<p>
	They then made their way up Manchester Road, towards Four Lane Ends.
</p>

<p>
	Dancing on Ice finalist and Coronation Street star, Faye Brookes, joins the cast of Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom The Musical, starring in the lead female role of Fran.* She will join Kevin Clifton, who stars as Scott Hastings, in the all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza as it makes its way across the UK &amp; Ireland as part of its huge 10-month tour which comes to The Lowry, Salford from Monday 26th June to Saturday 1st July.
</p>

<p>
	The musical, based on the award-winning global film phenomenon of the same name, inspired the world to dance and spawned the smash-hit TV series Strictly Come Dancing. Directed by Craig Revel Horwood, who co-choreographs with Strictly's creative director Jason Gilkison, the tour kicked off in Portsmouth on 26 September and culminates in Bristol on 15 July.
</p>

<p>
	Faye, who takes over the role of Fran from Maisie Smith who leaves the show on 25 March, is no stranger to musical theatre, having previously starred as Roxie Hart in Chicago, Princess Fiona in Shrek and Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.  She became a household name when she joined Coronation Street in the role of Kate Connor, from 2015-2019, and was involved in some of the biggest storylines the show has seen. In 2017 Faye won the National Television Award for Best Newcomer, while in 2021 she made it all the way to the final of ITV's Dancing on Ice.

<p>
	Strictly Ballroom The Musical tells the beguiling story of Scott Hastings, a talented, arrogant and rebellious young ballroom dancer – played by former Strictly Come Dancing professional and 2018 champion, Kevin Clifton. When Scott's radical dance moves see him fall out of favour with the Australian Federation, he finds himself dancing with Fran (Faye Brookes), a beginner with no moves at all. Inspired by one another, this unlikely pair gather the courage to defy both convention and their families – and discover that, to be winners, the steps don't need to be strictly ballroom.
</p>

<p>
	Featuring a show-stopping book by Baz Luhrmann &amp; Craig Pearce, together with a sublime cast of over 20 world class performers, Strictly Ballroom brings to life iconic songs, including Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and Time After Time with dynamic and joyous verve. This tour will also feature some amazing new songs by internationally acclaimed artists including Sia, David Foster and Eddie Perfect. The show's scintillating singing, dazzling dancing and eye-popping costumes combine to bring audiences a story of heart, comedy and drama, and promises to be an unforgettable night under the glitterball.
</p>

<p>
	This uplifting and courageous musical originated as a stage play that Baz Luhrmann devised with a group of classmates at Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1984. Eight years later he made his screen directorial debut with 'Strictly Ballroom', the first instalment in Luhrmann's acclaimed Red Curtain Trilogy. The vibrant film enjoyed staggering success, winning three awards at the 1993 BAFTA awards and a 1994 Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture, going on to become one of the most successful Australian films of all time, earning more than $80 million at the box office. In April 2014 Strictly Ballroom The Musical had its world premiere at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
</p>

<p>
	Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom the Musical is a fabulous, feel-good evening full of sequins, singing and salsa. This unmissable kaleidoscope of glitz and glamour is a tonic for the soul and will send your heart soaring and toes tapping long after you leave the theatre!
