A community garden, forest school and café in the heart of Eccles has a new lease of life thanks to electricity and water supplies provided by Liberty.

The Ivy Den Café and Garden Shop at Cleavley Community Forest Garden on Port Salford Greenway in Winton started out as a local community hub and was officially opened last summer by Mayor Paul Dennett and MP Barbara Keeley.

Incredible Education, the community interest company that runs the project, specialises in health and wellbeing programmes delivered through horticulture and ‘forest school’ activities, such as making bug hotels using natural materials or creating a new pond.

Cleavley Community Forest Garden offers the perfect place for local schoolchildren and volunteers from across Salford to learn new skills and improve their wellbeing. For the same reason, it has become a frequent place for GPs to refer patients in need of relaxing, outdoor activities as part of social prescribing.

Ian Bocock from Incredible Education, who lives locally and is the driving force behind the project, converted a storage container into the Ivy Den Café with it initially running on a generator.

North-West property services company Liberty was introduced to the project by local landlord ForHousing and supported by building foundations for the community garden and polytunnel, and providing a reliable electricity source to the Ivy Den Cafe.

Liberty’s local team donated materials worth almost £5,000, as well as 90 hours of staff time to dig a trench by hand for electric cables and plumbing, connecting the buildings to the main supply. Additionally, the team fitted sockets and a heating supply while United Utilities ensured water supply to the project.

Overall, Liberty’s help totalled more than £10,000 of work and has created a comfortable and modern café.

	The improvements are enabling the café and shop to expand the activities they offer, as Ian Bocock from Incredible Education explains;

“Our next challenge is setting up a multipurpose workshop with ‘living roof’ made from plants to teach people woodwork skills.”

The project has also been supported by funding from the National Lottery, NHS Salford CCG and Salford CVS, and is now starting to generate its own income, standing it in good stead for the future.

Interim Assistant Regional Director of Liberty, Jason Marston, said: “Supporting Cleavley Community Forest Garden has been a real privilege. The facilities installed are excellent and it will add lots of benefits for the local people and school pupils to enjoy while learning more about horticulture.”

Four men from Salford appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday 10 January 2023, where they were sentenced following an investigation which uncovered a large scale drug conspiracy after a cannabis farm was located at one of the defendants homes in Worsley.

Kyle Darbyshire (20/05/1987) of Blantyre Avenue, Walkden, was sentenced to 12 years in jail after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply class A drugs and production and cultivation of cannabis.

Mark Burgess (17/05/1978) of Ellenbrook Road, Worsley, pleaded guilty to the production of cannabis and received a 24 month suspended sentence, 18 month supervision order, and was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and 5 rehabilitation days.

Mark Cox (13/02/1985) of Runnymeade, Swinton, was sentenced to a 10 month suspended sentence, 12 month supervision order and was ordered to complete 60 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to the production of cannabis.

Geoffrey White (05/01/1978) Thorpe Ave, Swinton, also pleaded guilty to the production of cannabis and was sentenced to a 10 month suspended sentence, 12 months suspension order and was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and 10 rehabilitation days.

The investigation into the organised crime group was part of Operation Venetic; the National Crime Agency led investigation in relation to the use of encrypted mobile phones, which are almost exclusively used for criminal activity including money laundering and drug supply, in a bid to evade police detection.

The gang were found to be using the encrypted devices on a regular basis to organise the purchasing of the drugs, namely cocaine and cannabis. Financial investigators valued the gangs potential returns from the drugs to be nearly £400,000.

Following a raid at the home address of Darbyshire in Walkden, a total of £15,799 cash as well a number of designer watches and jewellery were seized.

A flood alert for Lower River Irwell catchment including areas in Greater Manchester has been issued by the Environment Agency.

This means that flooding is possible within the catchment area and to be observant of the river levels and act with caution.

It should be noted that this is just an alert and not a warning.

Currently the Irwell River at the Former Manchester Racecourse (Kersal Wetlands) is just above what is considered to be normal levels at around 3.10m which is still far short of the measuring station record of 5.6m (recorded on Boxing Day - 26 December 2015).

I may have mentioned that a good friend of mine, Glenn Kennedy the premier Genealogist with over 35 years experience, and who has worked on several television shows as a researcher amongst other things, did my family tree for me with both amazing and frankly bizarre results going back as far as 1730!

Since then Glenn has done quite a few more family tree's including Fred Fielder's which threw up some surprises as can be imagined, the depth of research is frankly meticulous with both sides of the family tree i.e.Mother and Father's side being researched and recorded.

Glenn has kindly offered to donate the fee he charges for a full family tree research to our appeal to help local foodbanks, a magnificent gesture for which we can't thank him enough but we would like to stress that this is a one off offer.

He usually charges around £360 -£400 for his work, which is less than half the price that many, other Genealogists would charge, some charge over £1,000! this a great way to pass on your Ancestry and Family History all housed in a full keepsake book/file, with full research done on your Ancestors including all censuses, including the forthcoming 1921, plus event reports and original documents.

Joan Fielder our mutual friend read about Glenn's offer and has bid £370 to have her family tree researched.

If you have ever fancied doing your own family tree and like me couldn't be bothered, but was keen to find out more about your family, I can't recommend Glenn highly enough and the added bonus of helping local foodbanks, well this is your chance.

If you can top Joan's bid of £370...£400 would be nice please get in touch with me at newsdesk@salford.media and we shall do the rest, well Glenn will obviously!

We shall be closing this offer on January 31st, get bidding.

They have been helping Salfordian's look up to the wonders of the universe for decades, I should know as I was once a member of the S.A.S. and hold fond memories of peering through the scope as a child.

In recent years the old scope has been upgraded and it's mirror reground and silvered, in fact it is in better condition today than when it was manufactured.

However, I also remember the observatory having no toilet facilities. Not a problem for a youngster in need of a quick pee as it is surrounded by convenient bushes and foliage, but for the ladies and those with disabilities, it is a huge problem should they get caught short.

Now, SALFORD ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY is fundraising and every donation will help this cherished Salford Society to finally have some proper facilities.

Salford Astronomical Society was established in 1964 and in 1971 the Observatory was built on Chaseley Fields in Salford, but when it was built the water and drainage were never installed.

The society is planning to update the facilities on offer at Chaseley Fields by installing water and drainage so that they have toilets available for visitors.

Their ambition is to become a valued addition to the local community (they already are), opening the observatory up to schools and groups such as scouts.

The society already has regular well attended open evenings, allowing the people of Salford to pop along and look at such sights as the Moon, Mars and Uranus. It also holds monthly open lectures which are always well received by members and the public.

So please help if you can, spend a penny so that they can spend a penny.

A pillar in the Salford community has been transformed by a £30,000 refurbishment following an essential fundraising appeal.

The Hive community centre in Victoria Park, Swinton has long been providing life-changing support and welfare advice to Salford residents but needed a refurbishment it couldn’t afford. Now it has been refreshed and re-energised by the transformative works. The works allow it to continue to help support and promote residents to gain self-confidence and assist in finding employment in addition to wellbeing support for mental health issues and substance abuse. The Hive also facilitates free alternative education provision, delivered by the Community Social Inclusion Network (CSIN), which trains and mentors many individuals through difficult periods in their lives. It has played an integral part in improving the lives of residents, including ex-armed forces officer Jamie, who served in Iraq. He has found The Hive to be a “place to come to have a chat, share life experiences and access support to guide my life in a positive direction” and cannot imagine life without The Hive’s nurturing.

Danielle, who is currently homeless, has championed the community spirit of the hub. She said:
A key part of the work carried out by family-run contractor Seddon was the installation of central heating and high-quality insulation, which it hadn’t previously had. The centre has also had all windows replaced and a new kitchen fitted alongside painting and joinery work to make The Hive a more vibrant, welcoming, and comfortable space for all. The refurbishment has given the highly valued community space a new lease of life, with the investment allowing the facility to remain open throughout the year.

Its refurbishment was celebrated at a launch event 6th January. Key leaders from Salford City Council, including The Mayor of Salford, Paul Dennett and Les Woolhouse, head of building and facilities were in attendance as well as Seddon CEO Jonathan Seddon and owner and director Nicola Hodkinson. They were joined by residents who spoke positively about what The Hive and this refurbishment means to them and the Salford community at large.

I’m absolutely delighted to see it open, meet the people who use the centre and hear about the wide range of positive differences it makes to their lives. It is now a building fit for the excellent services it provides and set for a positive future.

“Salford City Council has supported the Hive since it opened its doors to both veterans and the wider community. We’re proud of the incredible people who work there who clearly have the Spirit of Salford and provide local people with the vital support and care they need.”Seddon was touched by the value The Hive brings to the local community and was eager to provide the refurbishment works it desperately needed."

“The Hive is a fantastic and well-valued pillar of the community which has been providing so much to the residents of Salford for so many years. Hearing stories from the people they’ve helped support and get back on their feet has been inspirational. When we saw their appeal for central heating and just how much the refurbishment would mean to the local area, it was an easy choice for us to step in and provide as much assistance as we could.”

“CSIN and The Hive make a real, positive difference to people. We are proud to have refurbished The Hive so that residents of Salford have a much-needed space to come together to socialise and enjoy activities and enrichment all year round.”
