	Salford-based Manchester City Mission has been voted Salix Homes Springboard Hero 2022 and awarded £1000 to help continue their work.
</p>

<p>
	The result follows a closely fought month-long public vote between the four finalists in which nearly 800 votes were cast.
</p>

<p>
	The Mission provides a vital lifeline for people living in poverty and those affected by the cost-of-living crisis in Salford, with their Family Food Fayre project providing access to low-cost food, clothing and essentials to the local community.

		</p>

		<p>
			“I also want to thank Salix Homes - the Springboard Hero competition gave us the opportunity to let more people know about us and the work we do, it will mean so much to everyone who gives their time and energy to help residents who need us more now than ever.”

	Currently based at the Windsor Centre in Salford, they offer a twice-a-week drop-in session where residents can choose from a wide range of food items worth around £15 for just £3.
</p>

<p>
	Salford housing association Salix Homes supports the project by paying membership fees for its tenants in financial difficulty, and its Springboard fund has also been used to cover the costs of repairs to ensure vital equipment is maintained.
</p>

<p>
	This year, Salix Homes has donated around £33,000 to dozens of local groups and initiatives across Salford as part of its Springboard community grant programme, which provides much-needed cash injections to local projects that boost community spirit, promote health and wellbeing, reduce isolation and improve the environment.
</p>

<p>
	Four of the projects Salix Homes has supported over the year are entered into the annual Springboard Heroes Awards and given the chance to win a further £1,000 cash boost.
</p>

<p>
	This year’s competition was closely contested between four finalists, as worthy runners-up Bee Corner, Salford Boxing Club and Seedley and Langworthy in Bloom will each receive £100.

		<p>
			“Huge congratulations to the Manchester City Mission’s Family Food Fayre, which is a very worthy winner of our annual Springboard Heroes Awards, as voted by the public. It’s projects like these that make our communities so special, and we hope our donation will go some way in supporting them to continue the fantastic work that they do.”

	<strong>Salford’s Super Gran Linda Ryan age 71 is deep in training to swim 400 lengths at Broughton Swimming Pool for children’s charity Brainwave next month.</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Linda has always loved swimming from a young age and at 4 foot 10.5 inches recalls how she taught her grandson Thomas to swim when he was a youngster and how he is now towering over her at around 6 feet.  At the age of 17 Thomas is now not only a proficient swimmer thanks to Linda but a boxer which Linda takes no credit for.

<p>
	We reported yesterday that we gave £80 each to The Mustard Tree Foodbank and The Unemployed Resources Center, Breakfast Club to help them purchase essential foodstuffs, the money came from a donated piece of artwork by the talented, Brian Gorman which was purchased for £250 by the ever generous, John Mottershead.
</p>

<p>
	Today we paid a return visit to The Emmanuel Church on Langworthy Road, Salford for a chat with community organiser, Peter Simms to hand over £90 for their foodbank, which is open on a Wednesday morning, 10am - 12pm and is currently helping to feed 50 families a week.
</p>

<p>
	"We are seeing a huge increase in the number of families using the service which is managed by my mother Yvonne and other volunteers, nobody gets paid I hasten to add.
</p>

<p>
	The main foods we can offer are high in protein, eggs, tuna, beans, pasta, cereals etc, we also offer toiletries, free contraceptives and sanitary products for females, sadly we can never have food on our shelves to feed our users.
</p>

<p>
	I have seen Mothers come in and just choose food to feed their children and they go hungry, same with Fathers who do the same, it's heart breaking to see in this day and age, food should be guaranteed, not a luxury"
</p>

<p>
	The foodbank spends £400 a week purchasing food from discount cash and carry stores and Fare Share, this money is raised from fund raising events and local grants but is never enough, last week Yvonne paid for 24, whites, sliced loaves to restock the shelves out of her own money, which left me speechless when she told me on our last visit.
</p>

<p>
	The £90 we gave them today is sadly a drop in the ocean to them, and so if you can help in any way by dropping off, any unwanted canned foods, pasta and toiletries at the foodbank, I would urge you to do so, these people truly are the unsung heroes of Salford, and they need our help.

	Heroic firefighters from Irlam and Eccles, saved a life this evening after carrying the occupant of a burning building in Cadishead to safety.
</p>

<p>
	Emergency services had responded to reports of a fire breaking out in flat on Liverpool Road, close to the junction with School Lane.
</p>

<p>
	The firefighters entered the burning building and thankfully managed to locate a person inside who was quickly rescued and taken to safety.
</p>

<p>
	The road was temporarily closed to traffic during the incident but has since been reopened.
</p>

<p>
	Public house, The Coach and Horses; along with several local takeaways provided refreshments and warm shelter to those who had been displaced from their homes, until the flames were extinguished and they were made safe once more.

<p>
	Today we called in at the Salford Unemployed Resources Centre, on Liverpool Road, Patricroft, to hand over £80, part of the money that was raised from the sale of the Brian Gorman artwork to help fund their Breakfast Club and Emergency Food Bank.
</p>

<p>
	We spoke to John Howard one of the staff there who told us that the centre provides much needed, support services, giving advice on benefits, housing, law, disability etc as well as a Breakfast Club which gives free breakfasts to around 10 people a day.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileext="jpg" data-fileid="2174" href="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2022_09/tuc.jpg.723859073d8af08107fdbe9f92cf79ea.jpg" rel=""><img alt="tuc.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="2174" data-ratio="52.50" data-unique="hifv64lq7" style="height: auto;" width="1000" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2022_09/tuc.thumb.jpg.f07bfe38f2350669e207d393fa0651bc.jpg" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a>
</p>

<p>
	Ellen Marker who is in charge of the Breakfast Club told me that the club offers a lifeline to many people, with it being a meeting point for many of them, often single, elderly men although females do attend as there is no rules as to who can attend.
</p>

<p>
	The breakfast can vary as too how much food they have, it can be cereal one day, bacon and eggs the next but the main thing is not only are they getting fed but have companionship for a few hours a day.
</p>

<p>
	They are a member of Fare Share, Manchester who provide an amazing service distributing food parcels, meals and snacks to over 232 charities and community groups in Greater Manchester.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>We than called in at The Mustard Tree. Eccles and handed over £80 to staff member, Georgia Breen who told us:</strong>

			Also, I would like to thank John Mottershead, Brian Gorman for their kindness, and to Salford Media for highlighting the need for food banks"
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Tomorrow we shall be calling in at The Emmanuel Church on Langworthy Road to drop the rest of the money off to help their food bank carry on.
</p>

<p>
	So, if you have any spare tins of food, fruit, toiletries etc why not drop them off at your local food bank, these people using them really need our help, so please...do what you can.

<p>
	This has led to diversions being put into place for all vehicles along the stretch of road which links Swinton with Walkden, Little Hulton and Bolton.
</p>

<p>
	Diamond buses have announced that the 36 and 37 services are currently being diverted on the major bus route.
</p>

<p>
	There is heavy traffic congestion around the area so please avoid if you can.
</p>

<p>
	United Utilities are currently investigating the cause of the leak and hope to have it fixed as soon as possible.

	You may have read that Salford Media are big supporters of local food banks and have helped out with history walks and more recently thanks to the kindness of polymath, Brian Gorman who donated original artwork. the last one raised a whopping £250.
</p>

<p>
	Today I was contacted by a mutual chum, Phillip Amatt who I know is a massive music fan, with the kind offer of two tickets to see rock legends, Uriah Heep at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester on, Monday 3rd October.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileext="jpg" data-fileid="2173" href="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2022_09/ta.jpg.642c5c691dd00f2b17f11a2a08150e6d.jpg" rel=""><img alt="ta.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="2173" data-ratio="52.50" data-unique="so903ud1h" style="height: auto;" width="1000" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2022_09/ta.thumb.jpg.c8e417fe25ab0ea60eb8c493a77e09c3.jpg" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a>

<p>
	<strong>Phillip is unable to attend despite buying the tickets, he told us:</strong>

			"Sadly, I can't go due to medical issues my problem is Osteomyelitis in a toe bone which has me struggling to walk. I’m due for a resolution on Tuesday hopefully. Just wondered if you could somehow raise some money for your Food Bank Charity by selling these tickets to hopefully the highest bidder.
		</p>

		<p>
			We were going because we both went to the Free Trade Hall in 1971 where they were on with Sha Na Na and Paladin. It was a good night"
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	What a wonderful gesture to make.
</p>

<p>
	The tickets cost Phillip, £37.50 each and as you can see, they are good seats with an excellent view.
</p>

<p>
	So, if your fan of rock music and these boys can rock, they were inducted into, The Hall of Heavy Metal in 2019 after strutting their stuff for over 50 years please message me directly with your bid or to newsdesk@salfordmedia
</p>

<p>
	We are looking to recoup the face value of the tickets, but we shall accept a decent bid, so get your hands into your pockets and dig deep, you know it makes sense.

	Build Salford is a group of contractors and local housing providers including Salix Homes supported by Salford City Council, Salford City College, Connexions and third sector organisation known as the Salford Foundation.
</p>

<p>
	The project develops and delivers a series of construction programmes to support young people in Salford into employment and training within the industry.
</p>

<p>
	The programme aims to prepare young people for careers in construction with the focus on increasing the sector’s workforce.
</p>

<p>
	Build Salford targets young people who may have dropped out of education and are struggling to find work.
</p>

<p>
	The training initiative has resulted in over 100 apprenticeships so far.

	<strong>Jackie Crook the Skills and Work Manager at Salix Homes recently visited an innovative eco-friendly new construction site known as Neighbourhood in Kara Street Salford to meet one of the apprentices working on site, Jackie said:</strong>

<p>
	Earlier this month, Brian Gorman the incredibly talented artist author and playwright kindly donated once again a piece of artwork showing, Manchester United Manager, Erik ten Hag celebrating his team's victory over local rivals, Liverpool.
</p>

<p>
	The bidding was as they fast and furious, but there could only be one winner, step forward, John Mottershead, a Salford lad and Manchester United fan with a staggering £250 bid!
</p>

<p>
	We took the artwork to John's house tonight for him and I have to say, what a lovely bloke he is, he helps the voluntary outreach group, Two Brews who provide food and warm essentials to rough sleepers,
</p>

<p>
	John who is the owner of Salford Engineering Solutions allows them to use one of his units on Cobden Street to prepare food and for storage and doesn't charge them a penny!
</p>

<p>
	<strong>John told us:</strong>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	We usually split the money between The Mustard Tree Emergency Foodbank and The Salford Unemployed Resources Centre, however with such a generous bid from John we can afford to also help the Emmanuel Church Foodbank on Langworthy Road, Salford, who we visited this week and were shocked to see the number of people queueing for food and legal advice etc.
</p>

<p>
	I think the World needs more people like John Mottershead and Brian Gorman and I can't thank them enough.
</p>

<p>
	Finally take a look at Brian's artwork which are all for sale and help the man who helps others.

	More than 30 public buildings receive upgrades to make them greener through £7.45 million programme.
</p>

<p>
	Over 2,500 solar panels fitted across 21 public buildings with air source heat pumps installed at 12 sites.
</p>

<p>
	Scheme expected to save 584 tonnes of carbon being produced in Salford every year.
</p>

<p>
	A £7.45 million scheme to make Salford’s public buildings more energy efficient has been completed as the city council continues to play its part in combatting the impacts of climate change.
</p>

<p>
	The scheme, in which the council received funding through public body Salix Finance via the government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, has delivered improvements to 30 public buildings across the city, saving 2,498,663 kwh of energy and 584 tonnes of carbon.

</p>

<p>
	Since 2020, the scheme has delivered a range of measures, including fitting 2,562 solar panels on 21 public buildings, introducing air source heat pump systems to replace previous heating systems on 12 sites and installing battery energy storage systems at four sites which will store excess energy from the solar panels and charge electricity from the grid during cheaper off-peak periods at night to then redistribute this during the day, cutting our energy bills.

</p>

<p>
	The energy that the programme has saved would get you around the world 301 times in an electric car or be able to power a city of 277,629 houses – which would be over double the size of Salford – for a day. The carbon we have saved is the equivalent of the council planting a further 29,200 trees in the city and our solar panels will generate an output of 778,130 kwh of clean energy every year which will be tripled following the construction of our 5,000-panelled solar farm in Little Hulton.

			“Salford City Council is delivering innovative solutions to make our public estate more sustainable as we work towards our goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2038.
		</p>

		<p>
			“This scheme will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of a number of key buildings across the estate, including our leisure and sports facilities and children’s homes, which will now be sustainably heated and better equipped to help us build a greener Salford in the coming years.
		</p>

		<p>
			“However, we know we must do more to address the climate emergency and in addition to our £126 million of investment in our green spaces and walking and cycling routes across the city, our state-of-the-art solar farm will help us turbocharge our ability to generate clean energy in our city.”

</blockquote>

<p>
	Other measures included in the programme include installing a variety of energy-saving tools to our public estate such as LED lighting, insulation, radiator valves, double glazing and metering.
</p>

<p>
	The scheme was made possible after £78 million was secured by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and 15 other partners from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. The funding was provided to Greater Manchester to support energy efficiency upgrades to 200 buildings across the city region with Salford receiving £7.454 million.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>CASE STUDY</strong><br>
	<br>
	Of the 30 public buildings to be upgraded through the programme, Salford Sports Village in Kersal received the most new measures and is expected to save 46 tonnes of carbon per year.<br>
	The measures included:
</p>

<p>
	A new air source heat pump system to replace the previous gas boiler system that uses air extracted from the outside to channel heating around the building.
</p>

<p>
	130 solar panels installed to generate 40,600 kwh annually in energy.
</p>

<p>
	A new building energy management system (BeMS) which will monitor and control the building’s energy to ensure it runs at an efficient level and prevents it from being wasted.
</p>

<p>
	Both internal and external heating pipework insulation to ensure that maximum heat energy is distributed to the radiators.
</p>

<p>
	Installation of LED lighting within the building and the car park which uses much less electricity than other alternatives such as fluorescent lighting.
</p>

<p>
	A battery energy storage system to store excess generated solar energy and cheaper off-peak, grid-supplied electricity and then use this to power the building during the day when tariffs are more expensive.
</p>
