<p>
	The latest phase of repairs to the magnificent Grade I Listed Heaton Hall, which is situated within Heaton Park, North Manchester, have been completed. Tours around the Hall will be taking place from April.<br>
	<br>
	Heaton Hall – one of the North West’s most important heritage assets – has received key funding support from Historic England and Manchester City Council to ensure the building is protected in the future and, to complete essential maintenance works.  <br>
	<br>
	The Grade I listed property - which is one of very few Grade I listed buildings nationally - has been on Historic England’s At Risk list for many years. The Hall, designed in 1772 by esteemed architect James Wyatt, has undergone five phases of essential maintenance works. The previous four phases have consisted of work including: repairs to the east and west wings; replacement of the windows and shutters and, fixing the roof of the Orangery to protect the Hall.  <br>
	<br>
	The current phase, phase five, consists of on-going maintenance repair works including the replacement of recently broken windows, rendering repairs, and internal repair work on the first floor.  Maintenance and ongoing repairs were started over 3 years ago and have now been completed to help protect the architectural gem for future generations. The current works are now complete and further maintenance will take place in the future.<br>
	<br>
	The Friends of Heaton Park will conduct free, monthly guided tours on for groups to enjoy.<br>
	<br>
	<strong>The dates are:  </strong><br>

	Sunday 8 May<br>

	Sunday 14 August<br>
	<br>
	Saturday 10 September<br>
	<br>
	Sunday 11 September<br>
	<br>
	There will be also be charged, guided tours around the Hall on every second Sunday conducted by Blue Badge Guide Jonathan Schofield.  <br>
	<br>
	Manchester's flagship Heaton Park – along with the iconic Heaton Hall – has also benefited from major improvement works that will help maintain one of the city’s best-loved green spaces and most popular cultural attractions.<br>
	<br>
	Recently, 18 English oak trees have been planted in Heaton Park, on either side of the tram track near the Middleton Road entrance as part of the £1m Tree Action MCR programme, funded by Manchester City Council.  <br>
	<br>
	Over the past five years the Council has been refashioning aspects of the park in a sustainable way to help ensure accessibility and to further enhance the setting of the Hall and make the Grade I building a fitting focal point of the wider park landscape.  Improvements include the provision of new toilets in the park; creating wider entrances; the resurfacing of main paths and installing 23 new benches.  <br>

			<br>
			“Working closely with the City Council since 2015, Historic England has provided advice and £758,000 in grants to get to this point and we’re thrilled that locals and visitors will soon be able to get inside this North Manchester heritage gem once again.”

<p>
	Police officers from Swinton Neighbourhood Team executed a search warrant upon a premises on Deans Road, during which they discovered the building had been converted into a Cannabis farm with a number of plants in various stages of growth.
</p>

<p>
	The sealed off room had been kitted out with lamps which artificially mimic the suns rays as well as a hydroponic systems for watering. Fans dotted around the room helped to evenly regulate the temperature and humidity.
</p>

<p>
	As a result of the warrant, two people have been arrested pending further enquiries.
</p>

<p>
	In recent years a number of high profile MP's have proposed that the UK should follow in California’s footsteps and legalise cannabis allowing for proper regulation.
</p>

<p>
	Currently cannabis is designated as a Class B drug in the UK and anyone caught with it could face up to five years in prison.
</p>

<p>
	However, there has been a shift in approach towards medicinal cannabis products, which can now be legally prescribed to some patients.
</p>

<p>
	Campaigners say it is inevitable that the drug will be legalised in the UK within the next 5 to 10 years.
</p>

<p>
	However, the government says it "has no intention of changing the law" when it comes to legalisation.

</p>

<p>
	<span style="color:black">It's a warm, moving, unique and very funny show where comedy meets poetry and features stories, jokes and poems from an incredible body of work and covering an extraordinary life and career. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="color:black">Henry’s latest poetry collection “Poems Vol. 2”, will be published on 1st August 2022 and a new episode of his BBC Radio 4 ‘A Normal…’ has also been commissioned. <b>“A Normal History” </b>will be broadcast in the summer and the previous episodes can be played<span style="font-size:18px;"> </span></span><span style="color:#500050; font-size:10.5pt"><a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09rwvwt/episodes/guide" rel="external nofollow" title="https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09rwvwt/episodes/guide"><span style="font-size:11.0pt"><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">here.</span></strong> </span></a></span>

<p>
	<span style="color:black">As usual, Henry will theme some of the live show around his latest topic of investigation for the BBC episode - this time Henry explores history, and how this affects human’s everyday lives. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="color:black">Henry’s poetry renaissance was inspired by his experiences bringing up his autistic son Johnny, something which is central to the live show and all of Henry’s latest books.  The result is a funny and moving collection of work, both on the page and the stage, about life and family. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="color:black">Following the success of Henry’s poetry collections <i>The Beauty Within Shadow</i> and <i>Distance Between Clouds</i>, which were both written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he released <i>Collected Poems Vol. 1</i> in November 2021. His latest poetry collection, Collected Poems Vol. 2, will be published on 1st August 2022.. It’s the latest addition to a body of work that reflects upon many aspects of lockdown, life and love with Henry’s distinctive humour and light-hearted gravitas. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="color:black">Henry’s TV output includes some of the nation’s best loved programmes. His co-writing credits include The Royle Family, Mrs Merton, Coogan’s Run and feature film The Parole Officer. As co-founder and MD of Baby Cow Productions which he set up with Steve Coogan, he produced amongst others Gavin and Stacey, Alan Partridge, Moone Boy, Uncle, The Mighty Boosh, Nighty Night and the Oscar-nominated film Philomena. </span>

</p>

<p>
	<span style="color:black">Prior to his illustrious TV career, Henry toured as a performance poet with Pulp and new wave bands; stand up greats like Linda Smith and literary giants including Seamus Heaney. In this previous life, Henry travelled from Helsinki to New York via factories, schools, pop concerts, jazz clubs, folk clubs and festivals. </span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="color:black">Now, Henry is once again turning to his poetic roots and bringing new material to his fantastic 90 minute show, on the second leg of his first major tour. This is a chance to see ‘the Alan Bennett of poetry’ (<b>The Scotsman</b>) back on stage and at the top of his game. </span>

<p>
	Those nice people at Onyer Sports whose clothing is made from recycled materials and are firm believers in sustainable clothing have kindly donated an Onyer cycling top and cycling shorts to be won by one lucky reader.
</p>

<p>
	The shirt and shorts are ideal for a younger cyclist, who aims to be the next Mark Cavendish or Chris Froome and they are professionally made and tailored to fit the figure.
</p>

<p>
	Our glamourous model, Martin is shown holding the shirt up but sadly he couldn't fit the shirt on and refused point blank to model the shorts for us, sorry girls..
</p>

<p>
	<strong>So, how can you win this coveted prize?</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Simply send us a photo of yourself on a bicycle, preferably a racing model and the one that is the first drawn from our fabled lucky hat will be the winner.
</p>

<p>
	Send to newsdesk@salford.media and we will do the rest, competition finishes next Wednesday.
</p>

<p>
	Volunteers are urgently wanted to help box and pack loads of emergency supplies which are to be sent to Ukraine to help with the ongoing humanitarian efforts as well over a million people have been displaced due to the Russian invasion of the country.
</p>

<p>
	Trucks are arriving at <strong>Polish Centre, Worsley Road, Winton M30 8BL</strong> (opposite Lidl) this morning.
</p>

<p>
	Volunteers are required right NOW to help load all the emergency supplies onto them, so if you have a little free time this morning and want to help then we urge you to get involved and head down there.
</p>

<p>
	The trucks will depart to take all the boxed up donations to national distribution points for the trips to the Polish/Ukrainian border.
</p>

<p>
	The staff at the centre have asked for the public to suspend sending in donations as they have received an unbelievable amount and they say that they have enough for this leg of the operation.

<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color: rgb(42, 45, 52);">Rehearsals have started this week for the new UK touring production of <b>The Rise and Fall of Little Voice</b> by Jim Cartwright. Directed by Bronagh Lagan (Cruise, West End) and starring international YouTube sensation Christina Bianco (Funny Girl, Theatre Marigny Paris) in the title role alongside Shobna Gulati (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Coronation Street, Dinnerladies) as Mari Hoff, Ian Kelsey (Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Doctors) as Ray Say, Akshay Gulati (East is East; <b>The Rise and Fall of Little Voice</b>, Bolton Octagon) as Billy, William Ilkley (War Horse, UK/ International Tour, The Full Monty, UK Tour) as Mr Boo, Fiona Mulvaney (The Ferryman, West End; Silent Witness, BBC) as Sadie, and James Robert Moore (All That, Lion and Unicorn; Fanny &amp; Stella, Above the Stag) as Phone Man. The company is completed by Anna Hale (London Road, Cuba Pictures/BBC Films) as understudy LV and Sadie.</span></span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color: rgb(42, 45, 52);">In a role she was born to play, two-time Drama Desk nominee Christina Bianco will perform beloved ballads by icons such as Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey and Cilla Black live on stage, capturing their unique style through her extraordinary impressions. Just like LV, Christina is ‘the girl of a thousand voices’ and has performed to sold out crowds in New York and across the US. In the UK, she’s enjoyed extended runs headlining at London’s Hippodrome, Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, Live at Zedel’s and The Charing Cross Theatre. In 2019 Christina won great critical acclaim in the role of Fanny Brice in Stephen Mear’s production of Funny Girl at Theatre Marigny Paris, for which she was awarded the Trophees De Le Comedie Musicale.</span></span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color: rgb(42, 45, 52);">Meet<b> Little Voice</b> and Mari Hoff. A mother and daughter central to the heart of this Northern fairy-tale, but as far apart in character as can be. Left to her own devices, <b>Little Voice</b> starts to embody the famous divas she plays on repeat, from Judy Garland to Shirley Bassey, and becomes an overnight sensation. With humour, heart and countless timeless classics all performed live on stage, <b>‘The Rise and Fall of Little Voice’</b> explores the highs and the lows of small-town dreams, family rivalry and finding your voice in a noisy world.</span></span>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color: rgb(42, 45, 52);">Cartwright’s tender and life-affirming play won both the Olivier award and Evening Standard award for Best Comedy when it premiered at the National Theatre in 1992 in a production directed by Sam Mendes which transferred to the Aldwych Theatre, starring Jane Horrocks and Alison Steadman. Horrocks later reprised the role of LV in a film adaptation </span></span><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color: rgb(42, 45, 52);">also starring Brenda Blethyn, Michael Caine, Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent.</span></span>

	<span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="color: rgb(42, 45, 52);">With Musical Director and Associate Sound Designer Eamonn O’Dwyer, <b>The Rise and Fall of Little Voice</b> will feature set and costume design by Sara Perks, casting by Jane Deitch, lighting design by Nic Farman, Andrew Johnson as Sound Designer and Chris Matanlé as General Manager. <b>The Rise and Fall of Little Voice</b> is co-produced by Bonnie Comley and Stewart F Lane, Neil Gooding Productions and Tiny Giant Productions.</span></span>

<p>
	Salford City Council is calling on landlords of empty properties to take the necessary actions to get their homes back into use as it marks National Empty Homes Week.
</p>

<p>
	The week (which lasts from Monday 28 February until Sunday 6 March) is a national initiative which helps promote local councils’ work to bring empty properties into use. The latest government data shows that over 260,000 properties in England have stood empty for more than six months.
</p>

<p>
	Salford is currently home to 2,392 properties which have been empty for more than six months and the council continues to proactively work with landlords to bring these properties back into use as quick as possible. If poorly maintained, an empty property can easily deteriorate and become a source of nuisance to neighbours and an eyesore for an area.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Deputy City Mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly, Lead Member for Housing, Property and Regeneration said:</strong>
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-gramm="false" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">
		Quote
	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix" data-gramm="false">
		<p>
			“Salford is in the midst of a housing crisis and we take the issue of empty properties extremely seriously as we know that there are so many families and residents in our city that could make them a home of their own.<br>
			<br>
			“Our dedicated team deploy a wide range of tactics to bring these homes back into use and we have strong partnerships with local housing associations who help us refurbish them and find new tenants who are in need of a good quality home.<br>
			<br>
			“We offer landlords a number of options to find a solution for an empty home and we will not hesitate to use enforcement powers, such as serving improvement notices to ensure the home is habitable. I would urge landlords to work promptly with our teams to ensure that properties can be ready for use as soon as possible.”
		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	One of the measures available to landlords are grants from the council’s Private Sector Leasing Scheme to refurbish the property to a decent standard. The grants are subject to a 30% contribution from the owner and on the condition that the property be managed by a social landlord for five years and let at affordable rent levels.
</p>

<p>
	This scheme was recently put into practice to ensure that a one-bedroom flat in Broughton, that had been privately rented for 18 years and had been empty since July 2019, was available for a new tenant this January after the landlord was contacted by the team. The owner of the flat had been struggling to find a solution for the property which was then fully refurbished under the scheme.
</p>

<p>
	Our intervention brought another unit back into use that would have likely remained empty for a considerable period of time with one-bedroom flats in high-demand from residents across the city.

Some 5,000 women in our area are affected by this ruling and need to understand what is happening.
