<p>
	At about 3.30am on 18 July, police officers on patrol witnessed a vehicle collide with the Blackfriars Pub on Blackfriars Road, Salford, and subsequently catch fire.
</p>

<p>
	The front door of the historic building which was due to reopen this month was left damaged.
</p>

<p>
	Two male casualties were rescued from the vehicle by police officers, who then tried to put out the fire.
</p>

<p>
	NWAS and GMFRS also attended and the two men were taken to hospital where one of the men, the passenger aged 23, has sadly died despite the best efforts of the emergency services.
</p>

<p>
	The driver, also 23, remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
</p>

<p>
	There is a scene in place and an investigation by GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is under way.

<p>
	A £7m indoor attraction based on the blockbuster ITV show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! will open at MediaCityUK later this month following a 32-week project by principal contractor MC Construction.
</p>

<p>
	The Salford company carried out enabling and fit-out works at the venue and managed all directly-appointed contractors, including those responsible for themed attraction installations, ticketing, retail fit-out, IT and communications and the building management system. The works were undertaken across the back-of-house, entrance, reception and attraction space and retail areas.
</p>

<p>
	Tickets for I’m a Celebrity… Jungle Challenge will go on general sale Wednesday, July 21 and it will open to the public on Friday, July 30 at Quayside MediaCityUK, formerly known as the Lowry Shopping Centre, which is owned by Peel L&amp;P. Continuum Attractions will operate the attraction.
</p>

<p>
	During hours of wholesome fun, Campmates will be taken into the heart of the themed jungle setting to navigate a series of fun-filled, physical challenges.
</p>

<p>
	Featuring Main Camp, the Throne and Winners Bridge, the action-packed experience will put Campmates’ nerves and agility to the test as they race against the clock in a bid to collect stars and be crowned King or Queen of the jungle.
</p>

<p>
	Timed trials will involve scaling The Ascent, with over 8m of vertical rock, racing across the suspended Treetop Trail, swinging round the Jungle Run, taking a leap of faith on Get a Grip and gliding through the trees on a Zipline.
</p>

<p>
	Campmates could also find themselves taking on Kiosk Kev and a multiple-choice Dingo Dollar Challenge if the iconic telephone boxes, synonymous with the TV programme, ring out.
</p>

<p>
	The attraction will also feature Europe’s first ceiling-mounted Spyrider (*), a high-speed track which whizzes above the jungle canopy.

<p>
	Salford Red Devils player are lining up their defense against Covid-19 by joining the thousands of people getting their vaccine in Salford.
</p>

<p>
	Members of the famous Salford team visited the Covid-19 vaccination bus at Salford Quays, based outside the Lowry Theatre. Some players got their first dose and for others it was their second dose.
</p>

<p>
	In the sporting world, Covid-19 has affected normal activities considerably and led to the postponement and cancellation of a vast number of national and international events. Therefore, Salford Red Devils is doing their bit to get vaccinated in hope to get sports events back to normal and to keep everyone safe.

		</p>

		<p>
			‘’A lot of young people are less interested because they feel that they are young, healthy and feel that they are at low risk of dying from the disease. There are several reasons why it is very important for every adult to get their vaccine.
		</p>

		<p>
			Every athlete trains hundreds and thousands of hours to improve their performance. Covid-19 infections have already been associated with damage to the heart and the lungs. Can you imagine working and training in all of those practice sessions only to see all of those gains lost to a preventable illness?’’

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Another important consideration for young adults to think about is the risk of bringing infections home to family members who might be at higher risk for severe disease.
</p>

<p>
	Even though a person may have had the infection previously, they should still receive the vaccine to prevent from getting seriously ill and to prevent having long-term Covid symptoms.

<p>
	A Salford trader who was caught four times with counterfeit and unsafe toys has been fined.
</p>

<p>
	Over 850 items seized by trading standards officers were found to be counterfeit and 322 items did not comply with safety regulations.
</p>

<p>
	They included counterfeit Peppa Pig toys, Samsung charging cables and plastic toys which had more than the legal limit of chemicals which are restricted because of health concerns.
</p>

<p>
	Company director Mr Baljit Singh Batra, known as Mr Singh, pleaded guilty to eight trademark and product safety offences and was fined a total of £2,768. He was ordered to pay £1750 costs and a £190 victim surcharge when he appeared at Manchester and Salford magistrates court on Friday 2 July.
</p>

<p>
	On behalf of the company A2Z Smoking Products Ltd of Rugby Street, Broughton, he also pleaded guilty to a further eight product safety offences relating to unsafe packaging and non-compliant labelling. The company was fined a total of £3,072 and ordered to pay costs of £1750 and a £190 victim surcharge. The prosecution was brought by Salford City Council’s trading standards team. All the goods involved will now be destroyed and the materials recycled where possible.
</p>

<p>
	The court heard that trading standards officers visited the warehouse on August 1, 2019 and seized suspect Peppa Pig and Funny Face toys which were later found to be counterfeit and not compliant with labelling requirements. Mr Singh was given a warning and advisory letter on August 8 along with clear information about toy safety and packaging regulations.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_07/cosale2.jpg.a4ef22207ce0d8aacb0c3ce9b10863d3.jpg" data-fileid="1687" data-fileext="jpg" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1687" data-ratio="52.50" data-unique="3je3kzjqa" width="1000" alt="cosale2.jpg" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_07/cosale2.thumb.jpg.66fdf6235e63f85668a2741c477e2125.jpg" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a>
</p>

<p>
	Officers visited again on October 30, 2019 and advised Mr Singh that any items suspected to be counterfeit or unsafe would be seized. They selected three toys to submit for safety testing and Mr Singh agreed to remove the remaining stock from the showroom and not sell them until further notice.
</p>

<p>
	Testing showed the toys did not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 and the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008 and Mr Singh agreed to surrender the remaining stock for destruction.
</p>

<p>
	Officers also seized a number of toys including Disney character dolls, Thomas the Tank Engine and Peppa Pig dolls which were later found to be counterfeit. The Peppa Pig toys were identical to ones Mr Singh had voluntarily surrendered earlier in the year. Officers also seized Samsung charging cables which were also found to be counterfeit.
</p>

<p>
	On 11 December 2019 officers went to the shop after notification from Southampton trading standards that toy slime and a My Lovely Baby Betty doll had both failed safety tests. The doll was the same brand as that seized from Mr Singh on October 30. Officers seized the remaining dolls, toy unicorn squishes, blow up Santas and giraffes and flashing Minions toys.
</p>

<p>
	The blow-up toys and dolls contained higher levels of phthalates than the law permits. The chemicals are used to make plastics soft and flexible but their use has been limited in toys because of health risks. The toys also failed to comply with labelling regulations including no warning advising they should not be given to children under three because they could choke. The Minion toys were found to be counterfeit.
</p>

<p>
	Mr Singh was interviewed under caution in August 2020 and provided a pre-prepared statement. He produced five test reports which only related to one doll and did not show that that it was compliant with UK law.  He answered no comment to almost all other questions during the interview.

<p>
	<strong>The restoration and eventual re-opening of Buile Hill parks beloved Georgian Mansion took a major step forward toward yesterday with the joint signing of a memorandum of understanding between Salford City Council and the Buile Hill Mansion Association (BHMA).</strong>
</p>

<p>
	The group formed after a huge public backlash against interim proposals put forward by Capital &amp; Centric boss Tim Heatley in 2018, which suggested building a number of homes on land within the Mansion complex depot area as a way of funding renovations of both the Mansion and Park in general.
</p>

<p>
	An online petition posted at the time by local resident Linda Curran, gained thousands of signatures against the plans within just a few days, prompting the idea to eventually be abandoned as the company walked away.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The stately home was built in 1827 as the abode of Sir Thomas Potter, the first Lord Mayor of Manchester, it was eventually purchased by the Council and opened to the public on the 22nd July 1903, the former home being reopened as a natural history museum a few years later in 1906.
</p>

<p>
	The current boundary of the park was formed as a result of the absorption of the former Hart Hill estate in 1938.
</p>

<p>
	The much beloved historic gem would go on to become the home of the Lancashire Mining Museum up until it saw closure to the public in the year 2000, remaining boarded up and mothballed ever since.
</p>

<p>
	However, now thanks to a lot of hard work put into the project by both the Council and the BHMA, along with an election commitment made by the City Mayor to restore it to full use within his second term of office, the future of the Grade II listed Mansion is looking the brightest it has been in decades, with remedial work costing up to £150k already set to start within the coming month.
</p>

<p>
	Paul Dennett, visited the park yesterday (Monday 5th July), meeting with BHMA committee members to put his signature alongside that of the associations chair,  Jenni Smith, on a memorandum of understanding to jointly work on the plans and proposals for the site.
</p>

<p>
	In the meantime, the BHMA has wasted no time by enlisting the skills of respected local horticulturalist Pete Simms who has been working alongside them on exciting plans to bring about the restoration of the sensory garden which lies adjacent to the Mansion, after permission to do so was granted by the Council.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileext="jpg" data-fileid="1685" href="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_07/memsign2.jpg.18583f7abeddbd4594d7d8ae043a8c52.jpg" rel=""><img alt="memsign2.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1685" data-ratio="52.50" data-unique="5ddklf943" style="height: auto;" width="1000" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_07/memsign2.thumb.jpg.d160aa6049887ec87b1de6de7a5284d4.jpg" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a>
</p>

<p>
	Additionally the council has also earmarked and committed £1.2m to the mansion aiming to work with the BHMA to produce a business plan for both the mansion and depot area, as well as assisting in finding third party funding to support its eventual full restoration and reopening. The eventual cost could be as much as £5m.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileext="jpg" data-fileid="1686" href="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_07/mansion.jpg.486ccd9d400e877910c769ad9c719e47.jpg" rel=""><img alt="mansion.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1686" data-ratio="52.50" data-unique="2c5n9tjuy" style="height: auto;" width="1000" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_07/mansion.thumb.jpg.b904845e5eb2403a21686c9b2e529818.jpg" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a>
</p>

<p>
	Upcoming work will help restore the building so that it does not fall into a further state of disrepair, dealing with rot and making sure that it is structurally sound, with the overall aim being to bring both the mansion and depot area back to life in a way which the community and city to benefit from.
</p>

<p>
	The task will not be easy and there will no doubt be many obstacles to navigate along the way but for once both the council and the people seem to be on the same page regarding the historic building, with the Mayor speaking with real optimism regarding plans for its future.

<p>
	Michael Hopkins (21/08/1991) of Ivy Street, Manchester has been sentenced yesterday (Thursday 1 July 2021) at Minshull Street Crown Court to two years in jail after pleading guilty to one count of attempting to convey contraband into a prison and two counts of conveying contraband into a prison.
</p>

<p>
	He has further been sentenced to nine months for suspended sentences which have now been activated in relation to handling stolen goods and dangerous driving.
</p>

<p>
	On Saturday 3 April 2021, Hopkins was walking in a woodland area that surrounds the prison. He was seen to go through the undergrowth and jump the perimeter fence before he threw two packages over the prison wall - one of these packages was recovered from the exercise yard and was found to contain tobacco and lighters.
</p>

<p>
	He was swiftly detained and arrested by officers who were stationed nearby and being fed information from the prisons  internal CCTV system as part of Operation Dragonfire - an intelligence led multi-agency investigation targeting 'throw overs' of contraband.
</p>

<p>
	Op Dragonfire has been launched between Greater Manchester Police (GMP), HMP Forest Bank, HMPPS and North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU), to further the work carried out by prison staff and to target the higher tiers of criminal networks here in Greater Manchester.
</p>

<p>
	Hopkins was searched by officers and a further package was recovered, which was wrapped in blue tape and found to contain an amount of tobacco and cannabis.
</p>

<p>
	During a police interview, Hopkins was shown CCTV footage of a man throwing two packages - one of which was recovered - over the prison wall two weeks earlier. He admitted that the man in the footage was him.
</p>

<p>
	Overall, 384g of tobacco, 12.2g of cannabis and five A4 pages of psychoactive substance laced paper, worth an overall amount of up to several thousand pounds inside of prison, were recovered from the packages.
</p>

<p>
	Hopkins claimed that on both occasions, he did not know the contents of the packages and had been told to throw them over by a man who he refused to name.
</p>

<p>
	This sentencing is the result of one of the five investigations which are currently on-going under Operation Dragonfire in relation to prison throw overs.

<p>
	An armed gang including a man from Salford who carried out a series of almost 30 robberies across Greater Manchester and Cheshire and made off with thousands of pounds worth of goods have been jailed for over 50 years.
</p>

<p>
	Six men from Greater Manchester robbed a number of businesses between May and November 2019 and assaulted and threatened staff with machetes in order to get cash - including one robbery where a shop worker was dragged across the floor by her feet in Warrington.
</p>

<p>
	Jack Yarwood from Salford, Michael Burke from Trafford, Stuart Watson from Trafford, Daniel Adamson from Sale and Michael Kedie from Sale were all jailed for life at Manchester Crown Square today (29 June 2021).

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The first offence took place at Co-Op in Cheshire at around 9.45pm on 12 May 2019 where three masked men, Michael Kedie, Jack Yarwood and Michael Burke, entered the store and threatened staff with a machete and a hammer and stole cash from a safe.
</p>

<p>
	Further robberies continued to take place involving other associates in the organised crime group whilst detectives identified the series and pieced the case together.
</p>

<p>
	Detectives found that the group had a strong knowledge of the stores' procedures and protocols, ordering staff to go to the back of the store and empty the contents of the safe by threatening them with weapons and assaulting them.

<p>
	In one incident, the gang turned up in a stolen vehicle and stormed an address in Cheshire before dragging a naked child out of bed and locking the mother and her two children in a cupboard whilst they raided the house on Dunham Road, Warburton, on 16 September 2019. Expensive watches and jewellery were placed into one of the children's pillowcases and taken along with the family's car.
</p>

<p>
	In a statement read out in court from the family, they described as the "worst night of their lives" and the children are scarred for life.
</p>

<p>
	On the evening of 7 June 2019, Michael Kedie, Jack Yarwood, Michael Burke and Robert Lewis also stormed Co-op on Cross Street in Sale in balaclavas and dragged a member of staff to the back of the store and ordered her and her colleague to open a safe by threatening them with a machete before fleeing with a large amount of cash. Detectives later found that the machete was also used in a number of the other robberies.
</p>

</p>

<p>
	The robberies continued until November 2019 and left staff working in the stores extremely shaken up, especially a female worker at McColl's in Concorde Place in Warrington where one woman was dragged across the floor by her ankle.
</p>

<p>
	On 26 October 2019, one of the men grabbed a staff member from Co-op on Knutsford Road in Warrington and put her into a headlock and dragged her to the ground before stealing cash.
</p>

<p>
	A police patrol attended and followed a stolen Ford Focus from the Devon and Cornwall area the group left in before pursuing it through Partington when driver Daniel Adamson was reaching speeds over 80 mph in a 30mph zone. Two of the men got out of the vehicle armed with machetes and ran towards the officer in the vehicle before getting back into the Focus and driving off before abandoning it in the Racecourse estate in Sale.
</p>

<p>
	Officers recovered cigarettes, cash and other items from the robbery in Warrington from the Focus.
</p>

<p>
	Adamson was forensically linked to nine of the robberies after officers found Slazenger trousers worn by him during the offences at Robert Lewis' address.
</p>

<p>
	The rest of the OCG were rumbled when detectives from GMP's Serious and Organised Crime Group division pieced the series together and brought the gang to justice through phone and CCTV analysis, surveillance and the support of large number of witnesses in the case.

<p>
	In 1910, the then unknown Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel set sail on board a tramp steamer from Liverpool to New York as part of Fred Karno’s famous music hall troupe.
</p>

<p>
	On the voyage, they shared a cabin, they shared comedy routines, they shared laughter, but, by the end of the journey, they hated each other... yet they would both go on to become two of the biggest stars of the age.
</p>

<p>
	Inspired by real life events, Told by an Idiot’s acclaimed production of CHARLIE &amp; STAN is the remarkable story of the greatest comedy double act that nearly was.
</p>

<p>
	With an original piano score played live at every performance, CHARLIE &amp; STAN is a hilarious and deeply moving homage to two men who changed the world of comedy forever.
</p>

<p>
	Told by an Idiot have garnered critical acclaim and devoted audiences worldwide for their wonderfully theatrical shows. With CHARLIE &amp; STAN they have uncovered a hidden and poignant chapter of comedy history, shining an unusual light on a pair of show business legends.
</p>

<p>
	CHARLIE &amp; STAN is directed by Paul Hunter and designed by Ioana Curelea, with lighting design by Aideen Malone, video design by Dom Baker, original piano score by Mercury Award nominee Zoe Rahman and song arrangement by Sophie Cotton.
</p>

<p>
	 Jos Houben is physical comedy consultant and dance choreography is by Nuna Sandy for ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company.  CHARLIE &amp; STAN is from an idea by Irene Cotton, with additional material from the company.
</p>

<p>
	CHARLIE &amp; STAN is produced by David Pugh, Told by an Idiot and Theatre Royal Bath Productions.  CHARLIE &amp; STAN was originally produced by Told by an Idiot and Theatre Royal Plymouth, in association with Royal &amp; Derngate Northampton and Unity Theatre Liverpool.

<p>
	Eight men dressed as grannies travelled from Anfield to Old Trafford on June 26th dressed as grannies to raise £4,800 for specialised physiotherapy for ten-year-old Freya Bailey from Irlam, Manchester.
</p>

<p>
	Freya was born with two holes in her heart and has cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Her physiotherapy, which is not available on the NHS, costs around £1,000 per month.
</p>

<p>
	Dad Darren, 49, came up with the Scooter Grannies idea in 2016 to help raise funds for an operation which helped ease Freya’s pain. He now has to continue to raise money for ongoing physio which helps to keep her mobile and means she can continue to ride her adapted bike and go swimming.

	In previous years, Darren and his colleagues have scooted from Irlam to Blackpool, Irlam to Chester and Huddersfield to Irlam. They are sponsored by 20 local businesses who sponsor the race to continue to pay for Freya’s physiotherapy – the money raised by this event will cover physio for around the next five to six months. Darren’s next Scooter Grannies event is planned for September.
