<p>
	Salford City Council is asking local people to help make a difference this Clean Air Day.
</p>

<p>
	This national Clean Air Day is Thursday 17 June and the council would like residents to try and travel on foot – or by bike or another sustainable way.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Councillor Mike McCusker, Lead Member for Planning and Sustainable Development at Salford City Council, said:</strong>
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-gramm="false" data-ipsquote="">

			“Every less journey made by car makes a real difference to air quality.
		</p>

		<p>
			“So we really want local people to get behind this campaign and see travel by bike or foot if they can.”
		</p>

		<p>
			Statistics show that it takes around four minutes to travel a kilometre on a bike – or 10minutes on foot.
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong>Councillor McCusker continued:</strong>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix" data-gramm="false">

<p>

</p>

<p>
	To try and help cut emissions the council’s environmental services has recently swopped their diesel vans with 12 electric equivalents.
</p>

<p>
	The council bought the new Renault Kangoo vans in November,  which will be used in environmental operational service areas such as: waste and recycling collection monitoring; fly tipping investigation and enforcement; dog, animal and pest welfare and control.
</p>

<p>
	An E-scoter pilot is also taking place in Salford covering the University of Salford Peel Park and Fredrick Road campuses, Ordsall and the city centre and MediaCityUK, since launch in October 2020 80,000 miles of journeys have been made saving a potential 82,850lbs of CO2.
</p>

<p>
	Salford City Council has over the last few years implemented a number of walking and cycling improvements to develop our network including Port Salford Greenway, Salford Cycleway, Ordsall Quietway and Walkden Quietway.  Most recently a number of segregated cycle routes have been provided on key corridors such as Oldfield Rd and Chapel to improve access to the city centre.
</p>

<p>
	Investment in walking and cycling continues and future developments funded through the Mayors Walking and Cycling Challenge Fund (MCF) which are currently being constructed include Liverpool Street, Trafford Road, Swinton Greenway and RHS Links.  These will provide best in class cycling and waling routes for Salford ready for Clean Air Day 2022.
</p>

<p>
	You can join in by cycling or walking on the day and sharing your journey on social media using #GMCleanAirDay. Follow @CleanAirGM on Twitter and Facebook and visit cleanairgm.com for tips to get you moving.
</p>

<p>
	And people can use the code MANCRIDETORECOVERYJUNE to get four free 30minutes rides on E-scooters in Salford on Clean Air Day. See more on the E-scooter pilot here <a href="http://www.salford.gov.uk/parking-roads-and-travel/e-scooters/" rel="external nofollow">www.salford.gov.uk/parking-roads-and-travel/e-scooters/</a>

<p>
	It brings us great pleasure to announce that our friend Nick Abbott FRICS, Partner at Manchester-based Chartered Quantity Surveyors Simon Fenton Partnership, has been awarded an MBE for services to Young People and Social Inclusion in Salford in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2021.
</p>

<p>
	Nick, 53, has been honoured for his outstanding contribution as Chair of local charities: Salford Foundation, Salford Foundation Trust and the Salford Children’s Holiday Camp in Prestatyn. This accolade recognises the difference that Nick and his charity colleagues have made to the lives of young people and families across the City of Salford.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>In response to receiving the award, Nick said:</strong>

I hope that I can inspire others to do the same”.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Trust supports children and young people by providing opportunities for personal development and growth with a focus on offering activities that support young people’s mental wellbeing. Since 2004 we have supported more than 700 young Salfordians.
</p>

<p>
	The Trust provides help to families whose financial circumstances limit young people’s opportunities for development. In the longer term, we also support talented young people who cannot develop their talent without financial assistance e.g., a regional and national swimming champion from a low-income family, a Cerebral Palsy world championship participant amongst many other examples. Lack of financial resources should not be a barrier to success for talented young people in our city.
</p>

<p>
	In 2015, Nick was part of the team who saved the Salford Children’s Holiday in Prestatyn from closure, raising over £100,000 to refurbish the camp which re-opened in 2016. Since its re-opening, the camp has provided a holiday by the sea for over 3,000 children, young carers and families.
</p>

<p>
	Many of those who attended had never been to the seaside or had a holiday previously.
</p>

<p>
	The camp has gone from strength to strength over the years since reopening and has been revamped and improved, with a new play area among other facilities added.

</p>

<p>
	Upon its reopening in 2016 the camp threw a celebratory party which was attended not only by dignitaries from both Salford and Prestatyn but also by former campers from Salford who came out in their thousands to support the efforts against its closure so as to ensure that further generations of children can continue to experience the special experience they once had.

<p>
	Detectives in Salford and north Manchester are investigating three firearms discharges in the last three days.
</p>

<p>
	Thankfully, no life-threatening injuries have been reported at any of the incidents in the Cheetham Hill, Broughton, and Boothstown areas respectively, and there is nothing to support that the three are linked.
</p>

<p>
	However, police are treating the incidents very seriously following a stark decrease in discharges since the end of March thanks to targeted disruption activity by dedicated taskforces in both cities.
</p>

<p>
	The first of the incidents occurred before 8pm on Tuesday 8 June to a report of a 30-year-old man arriving with a serious wound to the leg.
</p>

<p>
	Subsequent enquiries have found evidence that it's likely to have been a targeted incident that may have taken place on Dinnington Drive, Cheetham Hill, and investigators continue to appeal for information.
</p>

<p>
	The night after, two shots were fired at an address on Great Cheetham Street West, Broughton, shortly prior to 11pm. No one was injured.

<p>
	The latest incident was last night (Thursday 10 June) at around 6.20pm when shots were fired from a black Vauxhall Astra towards a group of men following an altercation which happened off Booths Hall Way.
</p>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="ipsEmbed_finishedLoading" data-embedauthorid="1" data-embedcontent="" data-embedid="embed1134257052" scrolling="no" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/index.html" style="overflow: hidden; height: 408px; max-width: 502px;" data-embed-src="https://archive.salford.media/article/local/police-are-responding-after-reports-of-a-firearms-discharge-close-to-the-moorings-in-boothstown-r2740/?do=embed"></iframe>

<p>
	Detectives have been unable to identify any victims of the attack so far and their enquiries, including speaking to the many witnesses in the area and CCTV, are ongoing.
</p>

<p>
	No arrests have been made for any of the incidents and appropriate patrol plans are in place for over the weekend.
</p>

		</p>

		<p>
			"These incidents all appear to be targeted but there is no apparent link between them, nor is it exactly known what each of the discharges have arisen from; however, what is clear is that we refuse to tolerate a continuation of this violence.
		</p>

		<p>
			"We are actively working to establish the circumstances of each of these incidents with a view to targeting those responsible and remove them from being a danger on our streets.
		</p>

		<p>
			"In last night's incident, there were many people in the area who we have already been given important information from, and it is vital that the public continue to assist us by providing details in confidence to police or Crimestoppers anonymously.
		</p>

		<p>

<p>
	Eight men dressed as grannies are to travel from Anfield to Old Trafford on June 26th dressed as grannies to raise funds for specialised physiotherapy for ten-year-old Freya Bailey from Irlam, Manchester.
</p>

<p>
	Freya was born with two holes in her heart and has cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Her physiotherapy, which is not available on the NHS, costs around £1,000 per month.
</p>

<p>
	Dad Darren, 49, came up with the Scooter Grannies idea in 2016 to help raise funds for an operation which helped ease Freya’s pain. He now has to continue to raise money for ongoing physio which helps to keep her mobile and means she can continue to ride her adapted bike and go swimming

			Originally I was thinking of some kind of event with us dressed as superheroes but my friend Olive, who is 80, said: ‘Everyone does that, why not dress as grannies? So I took myself to the charity shop, bought some outfits and Scooter Grannies was born.’
		</p>

		<p>
			In previous years, Darren and his colleagues have scooted from Irlam to Blackpool, Irlam to Chester and Huddersfield to Irlam. Darren hopes to raise around £5,000 from 20 local businesses who sponsor the race to continue to pay for Freya’s physiotherapy.
		</p>

		<p>
			Freya will need physiotherapy indefinitely so I have to continue to think of innovative ways to raise funds for her and keep people’s interest. Scooter grannies is great fun to take part in and gives the people who see us a laugh too, I hope.

	Darren and his supporters are also keen to raise funds for other local families with children with disabilities, so this year any money collected along the route will support Michelle Vincent and her son Kaiden, 16, who has Angelman Syndrome. Michelle set up a group for local carers @m44 and Darren is also a member.

<p>
	The activities, which range from baking and cookery to arts, crafts, sports and music will run across Salford from Monday 26 July to Thursday 19 August.
</p>

<p>
	The initiative is aimed to help keep young people in safe, fun and interactive environments during the long summer holidays.

<p>
	Earlier this evening at around 6:25pm (Thursday 10th June 2021), police officers are said to have attended a report of a male who witnesses say had pointed and discharged a handgun twice in the location, on a canal bridge close to the Moorings public house on Booths Hall Way in Boothstown.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileext="jpg" data-fileid="1662" href="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_06/moor4.jpg.23078e78b2f1f239e2fe54e48e34e67a.jpg" rel=""><img alt="moor4.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1662" data-ratio="52.50" data-unique="t8kpknf1e" style="height: auto;" width="1000" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_06/moor4.thumb.jpg.27238b052dfa8a766bd129639e1e4558.jpg" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a>
</p>

<p>
	We are being told that at present police have so far found no evidence of any firearms discharge and thankfully no persons are being reported as having been injured.
</p>

<p>
	Patrols attended the scene and promptly carried out searches but no offenders have so far been located or identified, however, there remains a large police presence in the area and a temporary cordon has been put in place restricting traffic in both directions along Booths Hall Way from Highclove Lane to Leigh Road. The public are advised to avoid the area and local busses are being re routed. The cordon is expected to remain in place over-night as police continue their investigations.
</p>

<p>
	An unnamed witness has said that quick thinking staff instructed patrons to take cover inside the pub, after which the doors were locked tightly shut until the arrival of the police.
</p>

<p>
	Other residents in the area reported hearing a car engine being revved loudly and the sound of screeching tyres not long after the two distinctive bangs were heard, prompting suggestions from some that it could have been the car back-firing.
</p>

<p>
	The pub has since closed for the rest of the evening and anyone who has a booking is being advised not to turn up and to avoid the area.
</p>

</p>

<p>
	Police say that the investigation is at a very early stage and is being led by local detectives.

<p>
	A new housing development in Salford has seen all of its properties now sold or reserved.
</p>

<p>
	Poets in Swinton is the first new-build development from housing association Salix Homes, with all the new homes now snapped up by eager buyers.
</p>

<p>
	The 160-home mixed tenure development of two, three and four-bedroom properties, comprises of 120 homes for social housing rent, and a further 40 homes for outright sale, available through the Government’s Help to Buy scheme.
</p>

<p>
	The final 19 homes for off-plan sale were released in April by Willo Homes – Salix Homes’ new affordable home ownership brand - and all were reserved in a matter of weeks.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Terry McBride, development manager at Salix Homes, said:</strong>

			“Poets has proven an incredibly popular development, particularly with first-time buyers, and with such a shortage of housing in the area, and the attraction of the Help to Buy Scheme, we’re not surprised it’s sold out so quickly.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We’re incredibly proud to see our aspirations for more quality homes in Salford brought to life at Poets, and we now have a number of affordable housing developments in progress across the city and beyond, helping to provide much-needed homes for local people.
		</p>

		<p>
			“As our first new-build development, it’s been fantastic to see residents now settled and making memories at Poets, and we look forward to welcoming even more families to their new homes in the coming months, as the development nears completion.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The scheme has been part of a wider project to redevelop the surrounding Poets estate, which is also known as Beechfarm, and is so named due to the surrounding streets being named after famous wordsmiths. These include Shakespeare Road, Wordsworth Road and Tennyson Road.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileext="jpg" data-fileid="1660" href="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_06/salix2.jpg.c415d3e33957d20277d371a1f51a5156.jpg" rel=""><img alt="salix2.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1660" data-ratio="52.50" data-unique="c5y18aw2m" style="height: auto;" width="1000" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_06/salix2.thumb.jpg.5ac9ddc758eb4f07760a62cc41dd778f.jpg" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a>
</p>

<p>
	As part of the ambitious redevelopment scheme, 146 homes were demolished that had suffered historical structural issues, with the 160 brand-new homes built to replace them. Those residents affected by the demolition of the existing properties were given priority to move back into the new-build homes.
</p>

<p>
	Salix Homes is working alongside partner contractor Casey on the final phases of the development, which is expected to be completed later this year.
</p>

<p>
	Other affordable housing developments by Salix Homes now in progress, include the Artifex apartment block in Trinity, and Neighbourhood – a 157-home development earmarked for brownfield land in Seedley.

<p>
	A man from Salford has admitted money laundering and drug offences after police executed three warrants in the Eccles area and seized nearly £200,000 in cash and class B drugs.
</p>

<p>
	Anthony Stephenson (04/12/1986), of Westwood Crescent, had been charged with possession with intent to supply a controlled substance and money laundering.
</p>

<p>
	He appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court today (Friday 4 June) where he admitted both counts.
</p>

<p>
	He was arrested yesterday (3 June) after dawn raids at his addresses and two other Salford addresses on Old School Court and Mitcheson Gardens.
</p>

<p>
	Hitting the jackpot: Part of the haul that officers discovered in Eccles yesterday
</p>

<p>
	It was at his address and the Mitcheson Gardens address where officers discovered a large quantity of cash - linked to Stephenson - within locked safe deposit boxes.
</p>

<p>
	A Cops and Robbers gambling machine was also discovered at one of the addresses where much of the £192,210 total was recovered.
</p>

<p>
	Controlled substances packaged for supply, believed to be amphetamine, were also found in Stephenson's possession and he was arrested and taken to custody.
</p>

<p>
	Stephenson has been recalled to prison for a breach of his license conditions and will be sentenced at a later date for the offences he pleaded guilty to today.
</p>

<p>
	A 31-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a controlled substance and he has since been released while enquiries continue.

	The son of a Royal Marine Commando who fought in the D-Day landings is on a marathon mission to raise money for the veterans’ care home where his father lived for the last three years of his life.
</p>

<p>
	George Simms moved into Broughton House Veteran Care Village in Salford in 2017, two years after his wife Connie passed away. The couple had been together for more than 70 years.
</p>

<p>
	George was injured in a German air attack at Sword Beach during the Normandy Landings on D-Day – June 6, 1945 – and was evacuated to hospital back in England, where he made a good recovery.
</p>

<p>
	The father-of-three passed away in January this year at the age of 97. He left three sons – Allan, Brian and Ken – along with nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
</p>

<p>
	Brian, aged 71, who lives in Blackburn, is undertaking ‘George’s Walk’ to raise funds for Broughton House.
</p>

<p>
	Brian’s target is to complete 850 miles – the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats – before his 72nd birthday in August.
</p>

<p>
	Retired English and drama teacher Brian is chalking up the miles by walking in and around Blackburn. So far, he has completed 570 miles.
