<p>
	An historic Salford tree has become the latest victim of Dutch Elm disease which has already affected many tree's not only in Salford but across the whole country.
</p>

<p>
	The tree, which has stood affront of Buile Hill Mansion and is estimated to be around 200 years old has sadly died from the disease and must now be felled for safety reasons.
</p>

<p>
	The proud standing tree is likely to have been sprouted as a sapling around the 1825 when the mansion house was first <span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-align: left;">designed by the architect Sir Charles Barry and constructed </span>for its owner Thomas Potter, who would soon go on to become the first Mayor of Manchester.
</p>

<p>
	We took a trip to the park ourselves and confirm it is quite dead and will soon become dangerous not only to the public but also to the mansion itself if it is not dealt with.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileext="jpg" data-fileid="1642" href="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_04/bhtree2.jpg.ad39ff73b5e75d17f6ee191473513c91.jpg" rel=""><img alt="bhtree2.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1642" data-ratio="52.50" data-unique="iudqfolmh" style="height: auto;" width="1000" data-src="https://archive.salford.media/uploads/monthly_2021_04/bhtree2.thumb.jpg.5c9d7cbcd58da840f8b1c5c1a9f27a7f.jpg" src="https://archive.salford.media/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a>
</p>

<p>
	It will be sad to see it go after all these years as many including myself have fond memories of it, but alas the safety of the public is paramount.

		</p>

		<p>
			“It is very sad to lose such an old tree but if it is left in place it will start to drop dead branches which could fall on passers-by. If a large limb fell on someone, particularly a child, it could seriously injure them or even kill and no-one wants to see that happen.  If the tree itself fell it could even damage the Mansion.
		</p>

		<p>
			“As usual with any tree which has to be removed because it is damaged, diseased, dying or dead it will be replaced with two trees. Two new purple beech trees will be planted in Buile Hill Park.
		</p>

</p>

<p>
	Repairs to the Mansion, to prevent further deterioration will begin shortly to help prepare for full restoration of the building once proposals have been agreed.
</p>

<p>
	The Buile Hill Mansion Association who are liaisons between the public, council and those with interests in the mansion, have been working hard over the past few years to try get the mansion restored and back in use for future generations of Salfordians to enjoy.

	A soldier who spent more than 30 years as a regular in the British Army has joined Broughton House Veteran Care Village in Salford as its head of facilities.
</p>

<p>
	<br>
	Colin Adams, aged 50, joined the army as a 16-year-old in 1986 and served in the Royal Artillery and then the Royal Logistics Corps during an exemplary military career.
</p>

<p>
	<br>
	He has a number of campaign medals, including from the first Gulf War, Kosovo and Afghanistan. <br>
	Colin left the regular army in 2017 as a warrant officer but maintained his service involvement as a Squadron Sergeant Major with the reservist 236 (Manchester) Squadron, which is part of the 156 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps.
</p>

<p>
	<br>
	During Operation Rescript, the military operation to help tackle the Covid-19 pandemic, Colin was fully mobilised as the deputy military liaison officer for Greater Manchester, working with the NHS, police forces, fire and rescue services and local authorities across the region.

	Broughton House is currently undergoing a £13m transformation to create the UK’s first Veteran Care Village.<br>
	The first stage of the redevelopment was completed in September, when veterans moved into a new three-storey building which has 32 residential and nursing care beds over two floors.
</p>

<p>
	The next stage of the scheme has begun and will feature 32 residential care and residential dementia care beds and six independent living apartments alongside an Armed Forces Support Hub. Broughton House is seeking to raise a further £1.4m to complete this stage of the project.

<p>
	A man from Salford has been jailed after he was found in possession of almost 15,000 child abuse images.
</p>

<p>
	Carlos Calcano (DOB 09/10/1991), of Colman Gardens, Salford, pleaded guilty to 23 charges, including sexual communication with a number of children, causing children to watch sexual acts and inciting children to engage in sexual acts.
</p>

<p>
	Along with the charges relating to the child abuse images on his devices, he was also charged with further offences of distributing images.
</p>

<p>
	Calcano, who is from the Dominican Republic but has lived in the UK for a number of years, was sentenced to six years and 10 months in prison when he appeared at Manchester Crown Court on 9 April 2021.
</p>

<p>
	That sentence was reviewed at Manchester Crown Court on 20 April 2021 and reduced by four months because of time spent under police observation while on bail.
</p>

<p>
	An investigation by GMP's Sexual Crime Unit led officers to Calcano's home address where a number of computer devices were seized.
</p>

<p>
	Examinations of his devices found a large amount of child sexual abuse images - 2,095 category A images, 1,210 category B images and 11,687 category C images.
</p>

<p>
	Category A images are the most explicit and involve penetrative sexual activity, while category C images include sexualised images of a child.

	Operation Naseby a year on: Salford disruption activity sees shootings down, targets behind bars, and significant seizures of drugs, weapons and cars in its first year
</p>

<p>
	Firearms discharges have almost halved in Salford after GMP's dedicated operation to tackle organised crime in the city has seen the seizure of scores of weapons, drugs, and cars, as well as 180 arrests since its formation a year ago.
</p>

<p>
	The Operation Naseby disruption hub was introduced in April 2020 after a total of 25 firearms discharges, mostly involving a series of violent incidents between two rival criminal groups, in the space of 12 months in Salford.
</p>

<p>
	Over 30 officers - including detectives, complex safeguarding officers, neighbourhood patrols, and pursuit-trained officers - were tasked with proactively targeting and tackling offenders suspected of being involved in organised crime.

	Since its inception, the team has supported 179 arrests, 180 vehicle seizures, recovered over £500,000's worth of drugs, and searched over 75 houses.
</p>

<p>
	Weapons recovered have included a shotgun, two loaded crossbows, a number of machetes and dozens of other knives and bladed articles.
</p>

<p>
	Due to a backlog of court cases due to the pandemic, a further 42 cases are currently waiting to be heard.

</p>

<p>
	Twenty people have been recalled to prison, and numerous other offenders have been convicted of a range of drug, driving, and firearms offences, including several targets from the outset of the operation.
</p>

<p>
	This includes Jamie Swindells, 22, of Hereford Road, Eccles, who was convicted in September 2020 of possession of a bladed weapon, and possession with intent to supply crack cocaine after he was stopped in a vehicle and searched by officers.
</p>

<p>
	Swindells was believed to be involved in the dispute in the Kersal and Lower Broughton area in April 2020, which was one of the catalysts that prompted the hub's launch. He is now serving a five-and-a-half year sentence.
</p>

<p>
	Last week, Olatunde Kuberofsky, 23, from Salford, was jailed for over two-and-a-half years for possession with intent to supply crack cocaine, heroin and cocaine, and assault of an emergency worker, following a vehicle stop in Seedley.
</p>

<p>
	Kuberofsky tried to run away from the vehicle and physically assaulted an officer prior to being detained; subsequent searches found he was in possession of large quantities of Class A drugs and money.
</p>

<p>
	Yesterday (Tuesday 20 April), Tony Partington, 30, of Southgarth Road, and Spencer Candland, 36, of Langworthy Road, were jailed after they were found to have over £150,000's worth of cannabis in their car boot and at Partingon's address when stopped by officers in Langworthy in February 2020.
</p>

<p>
	They have each been sentenced to two-and-a-half years.
</p>

<p>
	Resources from GMP's Serious and Organised Crime Group, and Specialist Operations Unit have also been used to assist with the disruption hub's work.
</p>

<p>
	The team have worked with local agencies across Salford to safeguard vulnerable adults and children, and have continued collaboration with Salford City Council with Project Gulf - an initiative focused on diverting young people away from crime.

<p>
	An ambitious housing scheme to develop two brownfield sites in Salford has taken another step forward.
</p>

<p>
	Housing association Salix Homes and partner developer Step Places have completed the land transaction for the two parcels of land off Kara Street and Liverpool Street in Seedley South.
</p>

<p>
	The 3.8-acre site will be home to Neighbourhood – an eco-friendly scheme, which will see 157 homes built on the land, comprising social housing, homes for affordable rent and properties for Shared Ownership and outright sale.
</p>

</p>

<p>
	The community-focussed development will be a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes and one and two-bedroom apartments.

		</p>

		<p>
			“Neighbourhood has been purposefully designed to combine innovative architecture and contemporary living to create a vibrant and aspirational community of modern, high-quality and energy efficient homes that will complement the wider regeneration taking place across the city.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We’re really excited to be working with our partners Step Places on this new era of housing in Salford, which we’re confident will help create that real sense of community and neighbourly spirit which Salford is so famous for.”

<p>
	The innovative design is a modern take on the traditional terrace house, complete with rooftop gardens for some of the properties. There will be a public green space at the heart of the development and all houses will have cycle storage and electric car charging points.

<p>

</p>

<p>
	In total, 91 of the properties will be shared ownership, affordable rent and social housing, while 66 will be available for market sale.
</p>

<p>
	Salford Council will purchase 25 of the homes for social rent, while a further five properties will go to Inspiring Housing Community Land Trust for a community-led housing model, which aims to support affordable homes for local people.
</p>

<p>
	The 32 Affordable Rent homes will be allocated via Salford Home Search, while the remaining properties will be available via Salix Homes’ affordable home ownership brand - Willo Homes.
</p>

<p>
	Work is due to start on site later this year and it’s expected the development will be complete in 2023.

<p>
	Police appear to have uncovered a stash of weapons after a fire tore through a flat in Little Hulton this afternoon.
</p>

<p>
	At around 12:30pm a fire broke out in a flat above the ForHousing offices on Longshaw Drive.

<p>
