Salford IT expert Councillor John Mullen will have a whole new set of commands to programme into his Alexa – ‘manage my diary.’

Councillor Mullen, who represents Barton ward, will today (Wednesday January 20) be sworn in as Salford’s Ceremonial Mayor with his wife Michelle as Mayoress.

The ceremony, which should have taken place last May, has been delayed because of the pandemic. Councillor Mullen paid tribute to outgoing Ceremonial Mayor Councillor Charlie McIntyre saying he had gone ‘above and beyond’ to serve the people of the city.

“I’m delighted to be taking over the chains of office and I hope to be able to get out and about to meet people later this year as more people are vaccinated and we beat the Coronavirus pandemic,” said Councillor Mullen.

After leaving St Albert’s RC High School in 1976 Councillor Mullen became an apprentice glazer before switching trades and qualifying as a welder. In 1984, newly married to Michelle and with the arrival of their first son Kelvin, he taught himself computer programming and completed a BTEC at Worsley College.

From there he went on to work for an American credit company regularly travelling to America, Japan and Europe and complete a degree in computer science and professional qualifications with the British Computer Society. He later became self-employed and worked for the Office of National Statistics, Sainsbury’s, Walmart before semi-retiring last year.

Councillor Mullen joined the Labour party in 2001 to campaign for better health services and has represented Barton ward since 2004.

In his spare time Councillor Mullen enjoys travelling, watching Star Trek and other sci-fi programmes and playing computer games and programming Alexa with his grandson Jack.

Three rapid COVID-19 test centres have opened this week, as part of Salford City Council’s strategy to identify more positive cases and stop the spread the virus.

Frontline and key workers in Salford – those who cannot work from home and who have no symptoms of COVID-19 - are encouraged to be tested twice a week using rapid lateral flow tests. These tests are a new kind of technology with results available usually within an hour so can be used to test a higher number of people without COVID-19 symptoms. Anyone who tests positive using a rapid lateral flow test will then be advised to self-isolate and book a follow-up lab-based test, which will confirm the result.

Eccles Old Town Hall, Beesley Green Community Centre and Wardley Community Centre are the city’s first rapid testing sites to open, with additional sites planned across Salford opening over the next few weeks. Appointments must be booked via www.salford.gov.uk/rapidcoronavirustest.

To help launch the roll-out of rapid targeted testing, Salford is one of a number of localities to get support from military personnel, helping get the testing sites up and running and training local staff how to do the tests.

We are at critical point in time as we fight the COVID-19 pandemic in Salford. We have a rising number of COVID-19 infections and a new strain of the virus, which we know is more transmissible. Together with the mass roll out of the vaccine, testing is a really important part of the jigsaw to getting our way out of this pandemic. This is targeted testing at scale, so we're intentionally targeting people who are most at risk of exposure to the virus because they still need to go out to work such as teachers, early year practitioners, care workers visiting people in their homes, taxi drivers, and essential retail.

We're encouraging them to book rapid COVID-19 tests twice a week so they can continue going about their daily lives in the knowledge they are taking every precaution to keep themselves and the people they are in contact with safe.

One in three people who test positive for coronavirus have no symptoms at all and can therefore spread it unknowingly; including to people who are more vulnerable and therefore at high risk of becoming seriously ill.

“That is why testing is so important. Although it is not mandatory, by finding out if you are the one in three and taking the right action to self-isolate, you will be protecting your colleagues and your family members, and you will also be helping the people of Salford go about their daily lives with a reduced risk of catching COVID-19. You will be helping to stop the spread of the virus, save lives and play your part in getting the city of Salford and our lives back to normal.

Only people who have to leave home to go to work and without COVID-19 symptoms should book a rapid test. Anyone with symptoms that may be the coronavirus must self-isolate and book the lab-based test via www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test, or by calling 119 as usual.

	• Green infrastructure to increase the segregation space between carriageway and the cycle track wherever possible
• Improved pedestrian and cyclist crossing facilities, relocated to points adjacent to bus stops and the introduction of a controlled centrally located crossing
• Improved bus stops to support increased bus flows and patronage in the future.

I came across this story from December, 1920 in the pages of the Salford City Reporter and it tells what happens when love breaks down and tempers get frayed.

Lucy M Roberts who resided at Albany Street, Salford appeared at the Stipendiary Magistrates Court asking for a separation from her husband, Thomas who was a commissionaire at Salford Town Hall, Bexley Square.

She told the Magistrates that he was her second husband and they had been married since June, 1917, but she had left him, last Tuesday because of his persistent cruelty.

At the end of November he didn't give her any housekeeping money until the Sunday at 9.30pm which meant she was unable to buy any food for the house.

The following day she purchased bacon and bread and made a breakfast, with her daughter from her first marriage sat beside her, the girl had the temerity to put her cup of tea, close to Thomas's plate, who with the back of his hand pushed it away spilling tea over the table and the girl, saying he was not going to allow people to do what they liked at his table.

Lucy told him that her daughter was allowed to sit at the breakfast table, that her own Father bought, this obviously touched a nerve with Thomas, who said that they wouldn't be able to do as they liked at the breakfast table.

As if to prove his point he chucked the contents of the table into the open fire, and smashed the cups and saucers, then added that he was going out for a policeman to witness what had happened and stormed off.

No policeman appeared so Lucy went looking for one, and showed him the scratch marks on her face which she said he had caused, would appear no action was taken so she decided to pursue the matter in the courts.

Back in the dock she told the Magistrate that he talks in his sleep all night, and hardly sleeps, but when he is awake accuses her of seeing other men.

In March this year she had him at court on a summonses for putting her daughter's only costume and hat up the chimney whilst they were out, adding that he threatened her and promised worse was to come.

Mr Desquesnes for the Defence asked if things were unpleasant between Thomas and her daughter, she told him that she hadn't spoken to him since June, six months ago, and he had told her that he didn't want her living there, also it was her Fathers home and I have said I will keep a home for her.

Things got a tad, heated when Mr Desquesnes suggested that she was more attached to her daughter than her husband, and that if she left, she would follow her, she vehemently denied this and said he was the one causing all the trouble, also he gave her £2.15 shillings a week and accused her of being extravagant whilst he had bought two suits of clothing and spent £7 on a new gramophone.

The daughter, Gladys May took the stand and said that when Thomas tipped the table into the fire, she had to stop him from beating her mother, such was his temper.

At last, Thomas took the stand and said that he was living at nearby Florin Street and was a Commissionaire at Salford Town Hall earning £3- 12 shilling a week he also received a pension of three shilling a week and told a tale of woe.

He said that home life was very unhappy and that his wife was constantly knocking him about, and had called him, "A dirty old pig" and that he had to report for duty at The Town Hall with scratches and bruises ion his face.

As for the breakfast table incident he said that Gladys had told him that the table was her father's not his to which he had replied that the things on it, were his and pushed it into the fire.

The Stipendiary granted a separation order and ordered Thomas to pay 30 shillings a week to Lucy.

Not sure what to make of this case, obviously both, better off not being under the same roof, possibly the marriage may have survived if there was no third party, lets hope they both lived happily ever after.

A tattooist from Salford, who was found guilty of raping a client and sexual assaulting five other women at his parlour between 2013 and 2019, has been jailed.

Paul Little (10/07/1964), of Cutnook Lane, Irlam, was sentenced today (Tuesday 22 December 2020) at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, after being previously found guilty of sexual offences against a total of eight women – aged between 19 and 49.

The court heard how Little had inappropriately touched the women when they had come in the store to have a tattoo done on them and, on two separate occasions, he exposed himself to them.

The worst of Little's offending occurred in May 2014 when he raped a 49-year-old woman after completing a tattoo for her.

Little was originally arrested by police in December 2019, after a report was made that he had sexually assaulted a female client at the parlour.

Initially, Little was arrested and charged for sex offences concerning four women, but further victims and witnesses came forward after seeing the news in the media.

He denied all charges against him and the case was taken to trial with Little being found ‘guilty’ on Monday 23 November 2020 of the following:

- One count of rape;
- Five counts of sexual assault;
- Two counts of indecent exposure.

Little has now been ordered to serve eight years and six months in custody.

All of the victims have been, and continue to be, supported by specialist officers from GMP and partners agencies including St. Mary’s.

Detective Constable Stefani Matthews, of GMP’s Salford CID, said:

“Paul Little is a depraved individual who abused his position of trust and committed atrocious sexual offences against innocent women, who have since bravely come forward to ensure that he now spends a lengthy time behind bars.

“We, alongside our partners, continue to support the victims of Little’s crimes and hope that today’s hearing can bring an element of closure on what has been an exhausting pursuit for justice – going back as far as seven years for some of these women.

“Little seemed to think that he could deny his way out of these shocking and serious allegations, and we are pleased that the jury delivered the guilty verdicts and saw through this man’s deceptive lies. He is yet to show any remorse for the gross impact he has had on these women’s lives, which further compounds his offending.

“Little’s acts towards these women were abhorrent, but the common finding during this investigation is how uncomfortable he would tend to make women feel while they were in the shop as his client, and some of the things these women were subjected to hear were completely unacceptable; I hope others who are victims of physical or verbal abuse feel they can contact police and information will be treat with the strictest confidence.”

Wheelchair users and pushchair pushers will be able to get closer to nature thanks to improvements to an Eccles nature reserve.

The work at Three Sisters, off Rutland Road, Ellesmere Park, will also improve the home of the creatures which live on site, is being funded by Salford City Council through Section 106 funding which is paid by developers to mitigate the impact of housebuilding.

The work will replace an old jetty over the ponds with a more accessible bankside jetty and pond dipping platform and replace two damaged boardwalks with gravel footpaths which will be more ‘wheel’ friendly. Overgrown vegetation will also be cleared from the ponds and a nearby drainage channel to control the water level and prevent flooding and some of the trees overhanging the ponds will be trimmed to allow more light to reach the water.

Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety, said funds for the improvements had come from building new houses in Monton:

A man who stabbed a woman and threatened to stab others before claiming he was a terrorist in the Arndale Centre last year has been given a hospital order.

Ali Algdaner (08/01/1993), of Talbot Street, Eccles, was sentenced today (Friday 18 December 2020) at Manchester Crown Court (Crown Square) to an indefinite order under section 37 of the Mental Health Act 1983.

He had previously admitted affray, section 47 assault and communicating false information causing a bomb hoax.

The court heard how Algdaner had entered a restaurant in the centre, as it was beginning to close for the evening, on Friday 18 October 2019.

He made his way to the centre of the restaurant before suddenly grabbing a handful of knives and forks and stabbing a 20-year-old waitress in the back.

Algdaner proceeded to approach other members of staff and remaining customers – all of whom fled the scene unscathed – before he moved on to a restaurant next door and threatened more staff and members of the public.

By the time Algander paced down the mall, a majority of those inside the Arndale had been evacuated, but members of staff - who he had earlier threatened - bravely tried to stop him before police arrival.

Armed officers soon attended the scene and Algander was arrested.

While in police custody, Algander made false admissions that he was a terrorist and that he had planted bombs in the centre; a thorough search of the building ensued and no suspicious items were found.

Algander continued to state he had committed a terrorist attack and was subsequently assessed by mental health specialists before being detained under the Mental Health Act. He has since been remanded in a specialist hospital.

After being charged with affray, section 47 assault and false information causing a bomb hoax, Algander pleaded guilty on Tuesday 24 November 2020 and will now spend an indefinite time in hospital - requiring an assessment before he can be ever considered for release.

“I would also like to thank the dozen or so witnesses who assisted us with this investigation to ensure that we gathered insurmountable evidence that left this offender with little option but to admit the serious acts he committed that evening.

Two consultations on plans to make Salford’s streets quieter, greener and cleaner will be launched this Friday (December 18.)

Residents are being invited to have their say on plans for low traffic areas in central Salford and designs for an ‘active neighbourhood’ in Ordsall as part of Greater Manchester’s Bee Network.

Councillor Mike McCusker, executive support member for planning, housing and sustainable development, said consultation on the Ordsall proposals was held from mid-November last year to the end of January 2020 and received very positive comments, he said.

“We now want people to have their say on the design proposals and be involved in any changes to their area,

“The idea of an ‘active neighbourhood’ is to slow or remove through traffic in residential areas to encourage more street play, walking, cycling and use of public transport and to make local trips to school or the shops safer. Vehicle access to all homes and for emergency services will be maintained.

“The Bee Network plans in central Salford are also about creating better local connections to shops, schools, medical centres, jobs, parks, public transport and the city centre, quieter streets with cleaner air where children can play and measures to tackle problem parking by commuters.

“It could mean new and improved pedestrian crossings, environmental improvements and new cycle lanes, bike parking and repair stations.

“Funding is not yet guaranteed for either scheme so every comment will help with our business case.”

The Ordsall proposals include creating quiet streets at Colman Gardens/Phoebe Street, King William Street, Howard Street and part of Hulton Street which would mean new and improved pedestrian crossings particularly near schools, wider footpaths, tree planting, seating, cycle parking and sustainable drainage systems.

The mini roundabout at Phoebe Street would be replaced with a four-way junction and a bus gate added to Robert Hall Street to filter through traffic.

Salford City Council is working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) on both sets of plans and will ask for funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

The consultations run from Friday 18 December 2020 to Friday 22 January 2021, and people can leave as many comments as they wish online via Commonplace at https://ordsallfilteredneighbourhood.commonplace.is or https://citycentrebeenetwork.commonplace.is
