<p>
	Almost 800 Salford residents have put forward suggestions for making the city more pedestrian and cycle friendly to manage social distancing.
</p>

<p>
	Salford already had plans in place to deliver £60 million of walking and cycling improvements and has secured another £500,000 from Transport for Greater Manchester to implement temporary measures.
</p>

<p>
	The city has seen a huge increase in cycling and walking during the coronavirus ‘lockdown’ and is keen to make sure it continues. A consultation Safe Streets Save Lives attracted 4000 visits and 800 individual responses.
</p>

<p>
	Councillor Antrobus, Lead Member for Planning and Sustainable Development thanked everyone for their suggestions which range from adding new cycle lanes to clearing overgrown vegetation to create more space on footpaths, said:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix">
		<p>
			“We’ve seen huge benefits from people switching to walking and cycling recently and we want to encourage people to continue to do that as much as possible. We’ve seen clear roads and a fantastic improvement in air quality while people have been staying at home and exercising in our parks and walking and cycling routes across the city.  Now we need to protect that as much as we can while balancing it with people returning to work,
		</p>

		<p>
			“We will prioritise a list of short, medium and long-term measures for further discussion with the public but in the mean-time we are putting measures in place,”
		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	<a href="https://salfordliveablestreets.commonplace.is/" rel="external nofollow">https://salfordliveablestreets.commonplace.is/</a>Councillor Jim Cammell Executive Support and Walking &amp; Cycling Champion added:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">

	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents ipsClearfix">

			“We have installed 1600 metres of temporary protected cycle lanes on Liverpool Street between Albion Way and Oldfield Rd and closed the left turn lane on to Trinity Way from Irwell Street to provide another 200 metres of footpath for pedestrians.
		</p>

		<p>
			“We’re looking at where we can remove barriers or obstructions for cyclists, where we can move bus stops to create more space and how we can manage footpaths where people may congregate. People have asked for more bike storage in some areas so we will address that and we will be installing signs across the city to advise people on how to share space safely.”
		</p>

		<p>

		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	The suspended bus lane on Eccles Old Road near Salford Royal Hospital will also be reinstated and the council is working on a number of traffic Modal Filters to restrict through traffic in the Trinity and Islington neighbourhood to create a more pleasant walking and cycling environment.

<p>
	Young people in Salford put their best foot forward to ‘walk’ to the city’s German twin town without leaving home.
</p>

<p>
	The group, which includes Youth Mayor Rose Palmer and youth workers,set out to walk or cycle the equivalent of 506 miles or just over 814 kilometres – the distance from Salford Civic Centre, Swinton to the town of Lünen.
</p>

<p>
	The group logged their hours and the distance of daily exercise they manage on Strava until they all add up to a completed challenge. They logged over 400 kilometres in the first week and reached Lünen on June 3. They have now 'set off' for Salford's French twin town of St Ouen, a short distance from the centre of Paris and a journey of 526 km.
</p>

<p>
	Deputy City Mayor Councillor John Merry said it was a fantastic idea.

<p>
	On Tuesday 26 May a decision was made at Cabinet by the Deputy City Mayor so cladding works in Salford could continue.
</p>

<p>
	The council has approved amendments to the original PFI project to allow Pendleton Together Operating Limited (PTOL) to provide funding to allow important fire safety works at nine blocks of flats in Pendleton to continue.
</p>

<p>
	Work had already started to remove cladding on the nine blocks and the decision was made to ensure the removal can continue without delay, along with council funding for the installation of sprinklers as part of the works.
</p>

<p>
	Councillor John Merry, Deputy City Mayor at Salford City Council said:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">

		</p>

		<p>
			“Unfortunately the government has thrown many challenges in our way which has hampered the speed at which the cladding could be replaced. It has been incredibly frustrating.
		</p>

		<p>
			“In August 2017, a full council meeting was held and the council agreed that to borrow £25m to get the works done. The government then blocked this decision saying we could not loan the money to a PFI project. The government then released £400m of funding nationally and told us we were not eligible for the money.
		</p>

		<p>
			“So at Salford City Council we have had to work through a complex legal routes to get funding secured with our partners at PTOL. Thankfully we have now achieved this so PTOL can speed up the process to get the cladding replaced for our residents.”
		</p>

		<p>

<p>
	The decision by Salford City Council is still subject to government sign off.

	Two men aged 25 and 26 have been arrested on suspicion of burglary after a raid was carried out at a Salford Kwik Fit on Bury New Road yesterday evening (Monday 18th May).
</p>

<p>
	It would seem that both men were neither kwik or fit enough to evade the police helicopter which guided police on the ground to them whereupon they were promptly arrested upon suspicion of the burglary.
</p>

<p>
	Later in the evening members on our Facebook group reported a large police presence seen focusing on a block of flats on Cholmondeley Road which is thought to be linked.
</p>

<p>
	It is unknown what was stolen from the business premises but reportedly a van was taken.

<p>
	Police are appealing to the public for further information following the robbery of a van from a locksmith in the Clifton area of Salford.
</p>

<p>
	Officers were called shortly after midnight on Friday 15 May 2020 to reports that a black Ford Transit van containing around 50,000’s worth of work equipment was stolen from an address on Kestrel Avenue.
</p>

<p>
	Two men are understood to have approached a locksmith in his 70s – while he was sat in his van programming a key for a client – before proceeding to grab and punch him so they could get into his van.
</p>

<p>
	The first man reached through the open window of the van’s door and took the keys out of the ignition while the second man attacked the victim by punching him and pulling him out of the vehicle.
</p>

<p>
	The offenders then fled from the scene in the van, along with the locksmith’s work equipment.
</p>

<p>
	The man received minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment but was dropped off by police to his home in Lancashire as he was left with no alternative way back.
</p>

<p>
	Enquiries made by detectives have since established that the locksmith may have actually been booked by the offenders via a third party who had claimed they had lost their key.
</p>

<p>
	It is believed that the men involved are linked to a silver Fiat Punto and a white transit van which was also seen in the area at the time of the incident.
</p>

<p>
	They are described as white men in their 20s and were both wearing a black hoodie.
</p>

<p>
	No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

	Detectives are appealing for witnesses as part of an investigation into modern slavery.
</p>

<p>
	At around 7.30am on Saturday 2 May 2020 police responded to a report of concern for the welfare of a woman who was found at Dallas Court, off South Langworthy Road, Salford by a member of the public.
</p>

<p>
	Enquiries have established that the woman, aged in her 20s, had escaped from an unknown property where she was being forced to operate as a sex worker.
</p>

<p>
	One line of enquiry is that she travelled to the Salford area from outside Greater Manchester, after asking for help from a passing lorry driver following her escape.
</p>

<p>
	Enquiries are ongoing to determine what area of the country the lorry driver travelled from.
</p>

<p>
	When found, the woman was wearing a blue denim jacket and a dark-coloured dress. She has shoulder-length brown hair, which she was wearing in a ponytail.

	That’s the message from Salford City Council which has collected more than 50 ideas for all the family to celebrate during the weekend of May 8 to May 10 while staying safely at home.
</p>

<p>
	The activities, which can be found at  www.salford.gov.uk/VEDay75 and are being promoted on social media range from making your own Spitfire, designing your own Squander Bug and colouring in bunting, to trying out wartime recipes for a tea party and learning why lipstick was a weapon of war.
</p>

<p>
	The collection also includes links to history, wartime places to visit online such as Churchill’s War Rooms and Liverpool’s War Museum which was the headquarters for the Battle of the Atlantic and tells the story of two local war heroes who now live at Broughton House, Salford which is trying to raise £1 million to build the north west’s first veteran’s care village.
</p>

<p>
	The council has also paid tribute to those who served and sacrificed both in the Second World War and in today’s fight against Coronavirus with giant banners at the Civic Centre in Swinton.
</p>

<p>
	Veterans champions Councillor Margaret Morris MBE and Councillor Barry Warner said it was vital people continued the ‘war effort’ and continued to observe the social distancing instructions.

<p>
	That will be followed by a livestream event on the Legion’s website, sharing Second World War stories and memories, an evening of memories and music from 8pm on BBC One and a national rendition of Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ at 9pm.

<p>
	Salford Council and Greater Manchester Police have given warnings after a sickening scammer contacted a recently bereaved family purporting to be from the Council's bereavement services.
</p>

<p>
	The male caller then shockingly stated that payment for an upcoming funeral had been declined and that the family would have to make a card payment via the phone for their loved ones burial or it would be cancelled.
</p>

<p>
	Fortunately the family refused the payment and contacted Salford City Council who confirmed it to have been a scam.
</p>

<p>
	Police say that the matter is now under investigation and that similar scams have been increasing since lockdown as more common crimes such as burglaries from homes have reduced.

<p>
	Both the Police and Council are asking members of the public to remain vigilant and report any concerns to GMP or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

	Never under any circumstances should you give personal information or payment over the phone unless you are completely sure who you are dealing with at the other end.

<p>
	Specials Sergeant Phil Leonard has been producing face masks for local care home staff at his factory in Salford.
</p>

<p>
	Daylight Grip &amp; Textiles usually manufactures textiles for film and TV but since the factory was forced to halt production due to COVID-19, Phil and his staff have been utilising their skills and materials by manufacturing thousands of face masks.
</p>

<p>
	The face masks have then been personally distributed by Phil to local care homes, completely free of charge.
</p>

<p>
	The team has also been producing uniform washbags for key workers and adjustable headbands for carers to hook their face masks on and improve the comfort over the course of long shifts.
</p>

<p>
	Phil, who has been a Specials Sergeant since January 2019 and works across the Bury District, said:

<p>
	A NUMBER of household waste recycling centres across Greater Manchester will reopen from Saturday 2 May, with some restrictions and new measures in place to protect the health and wellbeing of residents and staff during the coronavirus pandemic.
</p>

<p>
	At last week’s Greater Manchester COVID-19 Emergency Committee, the nine councils that make up the Greater Manchester Waste Authority agreed to reopen some recycling centres. The decision was taken in accordance with Government guidelines and is based on staffing, accessibility, and the agreement of traffic management plans with local authorities. Reopening is being carefully planned and managed, with the involvement of Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
</p>

<p>
	Among the criteria being taken into account are staffing arrangements at waste disposal facilities operated by SUEZ, with more staff deployed to handle the increased volume of waste and recycling picked up during household bin collections.
</p>

<p>
	<strong><span>Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said:</span></strong>

			“I want to thank the people of Greater Manchester for their patience while these facilities have been closed. At every stage of this process we’ve taken decisions based on the official guidance, which has been about limiting non-essential journeys and reinforcing the Stay At Home message.
		</p>

		<p>
			“Now that the Government guidance has been updated, we have taken a collective decision to reopen some of our centres. There will be localised traffic management in place to control queuing, with each council taking steps to ensure that centres can reopen and operate safely.
		</p>

		<p>
			“While we are reopening centres, this is not a return to normal. We would ask the public to limit their journeys and only travel to a household waste and recycling centre if it is absolutely essential to do so. If the situation becomes unmanageable we may have to reassess this decision, but that is not something we want to do and, I hope, will not become necessary. Let’s everyone stay safe and look after each other at this difficult time.”

	Centres will be accepting bagged general waste only, and will be open to Greater Manchester residents who show proof of address, such as a council tax, gas, or electricity bill. Social distancing measures will be in place, and the number of cars allowed on to the sites will be limited, with one person allowed out of their vehicle to dispose of their waste. Staff will be unable to assist with unloading and no pedestrian access will be permitted.

	Doorstep collections for general waste continue as normal throughout all boroughs, and people are advised to visit recycling centres only if absolutely necessary.

<p>
	Manchester-based provider of chewable vitamins and supplements, Yumi Nutrition, has donated 1,000 CE approved PPE face masks to help protect doctors and nurses treating coronavirus patients.
</p>

<p>
	Yumi Nutrition made the donation to the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust after essential personal protective equipment was stolen from its offices in a recent break- in. The three-ply face masks provide a high level of protection to help prevent the spread of viruses and will be used to reduce risk to staff as NHS hospitals across the UK face personal protective equipment shortages.
</p>

<p>
	Alongside the donation, Yumi Nutrition is offering a 50% discount on its full range of products to all NHS staff to further support those working across the UK in the fight against coronavirus. The company has also implemented an option on its website for customers to donate to the NHS Charities’ ‘COVID-19 Urgent Appeal’ to raise money for staff, volunteers and patients impacted by the virus, with all customer donations matched by Yumi Nutrition at the end of the month.
</p>

<p>
	As well as taking action to support the NHS, Yumi Nutrition has also made a 53.5kg donation to Manchester Central Foodbank, which has been impacted by the ongoing epidemic with panic-buying leading to a drop in donations. With supplies running low at a time when demand is increasing, the Yumi Nutrition team delivered a selection of products specifically requested by their local food bank, including tinned food, cereals, biscuits, fruit juice, pasta and nappies.

			“We wanted to show our appreciation for those doing incredible work during these unprecedented times. After seeing the news about the shocking break-in at one of Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust’s offices, we were able to donate a number of PPE face masks which will play a small part in supporting the amazing staff working to protect the most vulnerable at this time. Our local food bank has also been hit hard by the pandemic, so we wanted to do our bit to help ensure vulnerable people have access to the essentials. It’s been fantastic to see the lengths people have gone to support those in need at such a difficult time and we’d encourage everyone that can help in any way to continue to play their part.”
