A man who was abused by a rapist in Rochdale when aged just six-years-old has helped us jail his abuser after bravely giving significant evidence over three decades on from the incident.

Ian Nixon - now aged 57 - was sentenced to over 13 years in prison yesterday (Monday 14 March) after pleading guilty to three offences including a rape from 1988.

Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard that Nixon abused the boy at a house in Rochdale when he was expected to look after him on three occasions between January 1988 and December 1989.

The victim contacted us to report the abuse in the summer of 2019 and was able to give us graphic detail of a number of incidents that he was subjected to by Nixon during the period of offending.

Detectives from our Rochdale district's Child Protection Investigation Unit soon interviewed Nixon - who was now living in Blackpool - where he claimed he didn’t remember the victim and he couldn’t recall the incidents that had been described by the victim; but didn’t deny that they had occurred.

Nixon, currently of no fixed address, was later charged with buggery, indecent assault and gross indecency before pleading guilty in December 2021.

He has now been ordered to serve 13 years and four months in jail and has been made to sign the sex offenders register.

The victim - now in his 30s - has been offered continuous support from specialist officers and partner agencies throughout the case.

Detective Constable Dave Neil, of GMP Rochdale's Child Protection Investigation Unit, said:

"Firstly, I have to pay tribute to the patience and stoicism of the survivor of this depraved abuse, as it is his bravery when coming forward - and the subsequent detail of his evidence - that has ensured Nixon will now rightly spend many years behind bars.

"The campaign of sexual abuse that Nixon subjected his young and vulnerable victim to when he was supposed to be in his care was utterly appalling and something the boy has had to grow up dealing with mentally and emotionally all the way up to adulthood.

"It's clear that no abuser can escape the consequences of their actions, no matter how long ago their offending was, and we will do our utmost to bring anyone responsible for such deplorable abuse to justice; while doing all we can with our partners to listen and support any victim of recent or non-recent sexual harm."

Local people and businesses have expressed their support for a public realm strategy for the next phase of development in Ancoats, helping to bring two decades of investment to completion.

A consultation held in January and February this year asked for feedback on plans to enhance the next phase of regeneration in Ancoats, which includes 1,500 new homes that will be brought forward within the improved public realm and enhanced green spaces.

The area currently suffers from unclear street layouts, which are difficult to navigate for pedestrians, and has become a rat run for vehicles attempting to avoid Great Ancoats Street. Local streets are also impacted by commuter and short-term parking, further compounding traffic issues.

From low density uses, vacant plots and unloved streets, the public realm investment will deliver a new environment for the 1,500 homes alongside 31,000 sqm of commercial space set within generous green spaces, safe green streets and cycle ways. And the innovative mobility hub is the catalyst for new safe and calmer streets for city living integrated with new residential investment and green infrastructure.

The new strategy looks to create a low-carbon, sustainable neighbourhood with vastly reduced car use and a focus on active travel, walking and cycling routes – alongside high-quality green spaces - which are all vital components of Manchester’s ambition to become zero carbon by 2038.

Overall, the feedback through consultation showed strong support for the vision and the principles of the Public Realm Strategy. Most notably:

Ancoats Green and Green Space - improvements to Ancoats Green and the establishment of the park as the “green heart” of the neighbourhood with clear and safe walking routes to Jersey Street and the Rochdale Canal. The strategy will protect the size of the existing green space and increase the number of trees planted in the neighbourhood.

Transport and Movement – to improve the street layout and traffic management to reduce rat running through the area. To improve safe walking and cycling routes through the area and ensure the streets are pedestrian friendly, which will better integrate the Poland Street neighbourhood into the wider area.

Crime and Antisocial Behaviour – requests to address crime and anti-social behaviour through further safety measures such as more street lighting.

Ancoats Mobility Hub – Is the catalyst for the innovate, practical and deliverable proposals, shifting the emphasis of public realm design to support active travel and healthy lifestyles.

The outcomes of the consultation are subject to a report going to the Council’s executive committee this week (Wednesday, 16 March):

“Previous development in Ancoats has followed the rigid street structure laid out by Manchester’s historic mills. Officers have arrested a man in connection with a series of robberies on women in Manchester city centre.

Between around midnight and 6am on Sunday (13 March 2022), a series of robberies were reported in the city centre including one where a member of staff received a hand injury.

The first robbery was reported on Portland Street where staff were threatened and cash was taken. Three further robberies were reported at businesses on Dale Street, Piccadilly where two women received minor injuries, and Dickinson Street.

Following extensive CCTV enquiries by local officers, a 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of four counts of robbery and assault. He remains in custody at this time.

Firefighters, volunteers and staff from across Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) have raised thousands of pounds to support the people of Ukraine – thanks to the generosity of people across the city-region.

Fire stations across Greater Manchester held charity car washes on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 March and raised over £27,000, with more to be counted. Colleagues from across the Service and Greater Manchester Combined Authority all chipped in to wash cars and collect donations from members of the public.

All of the money raised will be shared with Greater Manchester-based frontline medical aid charity UK-Med, which has launched an emergency appeal backed by the Mayor of Greater Manchester.

“We stand in solidarity with Ukraine and will do whatever we can to support all those affected by the devastating and tragic events that continue to unfold. The car washing days are just one of the ways the Service is helping this vital cause.

“I’d like to thank everyone that came along to the car washes – whether that be to wash cars, bring food supplies for our staff, or have a vehicle washed for a donation – we are overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the people of Greater Manchester.”

There have been some heart-warming stories of the community’s generosity and support over the weekend. At Marple fire station, local residents Alan and Joyce donated the £100 that they would have spent celebrating their recent 50th wedding anniversary.

At Rochdale fire station, emergency service colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service helped firefighters and GMFRS staff to clean cars.

Meanwhile, when firefighters at Farnworth fire station were called out to an emergency incident, members of the public took it upon themselves to wash cars and still donated generously.

The Service also received thanks from local residents and organisations with links to Ukraine. At Whitefield fire station, a resident from Ukraine dropped by to thank crews and volunteers, while at Agecroft members of the Eccles Polish centre provided thanks and sandwiches to GMFRS staff who have recently been helping to sort donations at the centre.

The car washes come as firefighters continue to support local charities with the ongoing humanitarian effort. This has also included crews helping with the sorting and distributing of donations at the Bury Polish Centre and distributing aid to warehouses in Trafford Park before they are shipped to Poland.

Later this week, a team of volunteers from GMFRS will join a national convoy delivering fire and rescue equipment to support firefighters on the frontline in Ukraine.

Two men, aged 22 and 49, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply and possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs. They remain in custody this afternoon for questioning.

A large quantity of class B drugs were recovered.

The raids were planned as part of the forces County Lines intensification week cracking down on drug supply in Greater Manchester.

County lines is the name given to drug dealing where organised criminal groups (OCGs) use phone lines to move and supply drugs, usually from cities into smaller towns and rural areas.

They exploit vulnerable people, including children and those with mental health or addiction issues, by recruiting them to distribute the drugs, often referred to as ‘drug running’.

Yesterday (11 March 2022) Aaron McKenna (01/10/2002) of Ridgeway Street, Manchester was jailed at Manchester Crown Square Court after pleading guilty to two counts of robbery and one count of dangerous driving.

On 24 May 2020, McKenna arranged to buy a moped that was being advertised for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

Both he and the victim had arranged to meet in Miles Platting so McKenna could purchase the bike and instructed the victim to go to a property on Halmore Road. Whilst outside the address, the victim was approached by two males who invited him around to the rear of the house, where he was then surrounded by a larger group, armed with weapons.

The group threatened the victim and stole the bike and the victim fled the scene in fear. Thankfully, he had been able to record the details McKenna had been using the contact him which later confirmed McKenna to be the orchestrator of the robbery. McKenna was then arrested on the 4 of June 2020 and released under investigation whilst his phone was sent off for decryption after refusing to assist police with the pin code.

Around a year later in April 2021, McKenna and a teenage boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were on Temperance Street, Manchester when they approached the victim who was getting into his parked car.

The two then punched and kicked the victim to the floor before they demanded his phones and keys and attempted to flee the scene in his car. McKenna and the teen then drove at members of the public who had attempted to help the victim and the teenager was detained at the scene by those who had helped.

The victim sustained a fractured finger and broken teeth as a result of the robbery.

McKenna fled the country to Dubai before he returned a few days later and was arrested and subsequently charged.

The teenager was sentenced at a previous date.

McKenna was yesterday sentenced to six years custodial for the April 2021 robbery. He was also sentenced to five years and 2 months imprisonment for the May 2020 robbery and six months imprisonment for dangerous driving. These are set to run concurrently.

He was also disqualified from driving for 63 months.

Philip Daly, (25/1/1980), of Beechlands Avenue, Altrincham, appeared at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court this afternoon (Thursday 10 March 2022), where he was jailed for 18 years with a further five years to be spent on license.

Daly was found guilty of the following offences at trial in October 2021:

	Eight counts of ABH.

One count of controlling and coercive behaviour.

	Two counts of rape.

Five counts of cause/incite to engage in penetrative sexual activity.

The offences all relate to the same victim who bravely reported Daly to the police, after enduring three years of harrowing physical, financial, mental and sexual abuse.

The investigation established that Daly's behaviour became increasingly more abusive week by week, starting with controlling and coercive behaviour such as banning the victim from seeing her family and friends, tearing up her passport, taking all of her wages from her leaving her with no money, and threatening to harm her if she left the house. Daly also regularly physically assaulted the victim following bouts of rage, causing severe cuts and bruising and leaving her fearing for her life.

During the three years Daly's controlling behaviour resulted in the victim complying with taking part in numerous sexual acts that she was uncomfortable with, but felt like she had no choice due to Daly's temper and what she feared the consequences would be if she declined. This left the victim struggling with her mental health.

In an impact statement the victim said:

"I regularly have nightmares about the traumatic events that he put me through, upon waking up from these nightmares I'm in a state of panic and a sense of having to be on high alert in case he's there".

The court heard how at around 6.55pm on Thursday 5 November 2020 a group of 13 males were walking along Moston Lane in the direction of Kenyon Lane, Moston. As they reached the junction, the group begin to run down Kenyon Lane and pull out weapons.

It was at this point the group ran at another group of males - that included John Soyoye - and began to swing machetes and other weapons, including bats, at them.

Brent Tchipenda began to fight with John but he and the smaller group attempted to flee the larger group after they all realised John had been injured.

The larger group began to pursue them on foot towards Birchenall Street. Once they had reached Birchenall Street, John became isolated from his group as he slowed due to injuries sustained which led to him being further assaulted by the larger group.

These injuries caused him to fall to the ground where he was surrounded by nine of the males and subjected to a violent attack as they all continually struck, stabbed, slashed and kicked him. This attack was also filmed by one of the group.

Shocked members of the public came to John's aid. Sadly, he died at the scene.

The larger group fled the area with some of that group jumping into a taxi and heading to Royal Oldham Hospital due to Tchipenda's injuries.

Having arrived at the Royal Oldham Hospital, Tchipenda headed into A&E alone and told staff that he had been the victim of an assault in Oldham. The others who were with Tchipenda in the taxi split off, taking his rucksack and blood stained outer clothing with them.

Later that evening, detectives completed enquiries at local hospitals and were suspicious of Tchipenda's explanation as to how he came by his injuries. As a result, Tchipenda was arrested on suspicion of Murder.

Francesco Raji, Christopher Semedo, Nelson Correia, Octavio Antonio and a 16-year-old boy who cannot be named were all subsequently arrested later that month and items were seized, including phones and clothing that were used on the night of the murder.

Examination of the 16-year-old's phones also uncovered drill lyrics written as notes on 7 November making reference to the death of 'MD', a nickname used by John Soyoye. A video was also uncovered with two of the attackers bragging about the murder.

Octavio Antonio was arrested trying to board a train at St Pancras International train station having earlier been circulated as wanted by the investigation team. Ismael Correia was later arrested on 23 December.

Following an 11 week trial between October and December 2021:

Francesco Raji (19/05/02) and Christopher Semedo (31/12/1998), both of Elm Road, Oldham were jailed for 21 years and 24 years respectively.

Brent Tchipenda (13/10/2002), of Wistaria Road, Gorton was jailed for 21 years.

Octavio Antonio (04/07/2002) of Deepdale Court, Blackley was jailed for 20 years.

Ismael Correia (10/08/2001), of no fixed abode was jailed for 20 and half years.

Nelson Correria (10/08/1999) of Petworth Road, Oldham was jailed for 23 and a half years.

A 16-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons was jailed for 16 years.

All seven were found guilty of murder and violent disorder.

Mohammed Al-Jaf (01/01/2001) of Bradney Close, Manchester was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter and violent disorder and is due to be sentenced at a later date.

The remaining five suspects are still sought for questioning and are believed to have left the UK shortly after the murder.

Police were called at around 4.40pm on Monday 7 March 2022 to a report that a woman had been approached and grabbed by a man in Medlock Valley, in an area close to the Co-op, Athens Way.

The man then proceeded to sexually assault her, whilst threatening her by telling her he had a knife.

The victim was able to raise the alarm and the offender subsequently fled the scene in the direction of Lees Road.

The man was described as white, between 5ft 9 to 11, of a skinny build and wearing a black beanie hat, grey hoody with the hood up, a black gilet, grey tracksuit bottoms and black trainers.

He is also described as having a local accent.

The woman is currently receiving the appropriate support from officers and high visibility foot patrols are being carried out in the area.

Like many police officers, Wigan's Chief Superintendent Emily Higham faced a range of "horrendous" domestic abuse incidents early on in her policing career.

Attending these incidents sparked her concern over the volume and variety of domestic abuse that she was witnessing in Greater Manchester.

As Emily progressed in her career, she helped bring in several improvements to the way domestic abuse cases were handled.

Some of her work included the introduction of multi-agency risk assessment conferences (MARAC), which are held weekly across GMP districts and involve partnership work with statutory agencies, councils, and charities, to provide the best care path for victims.

In 2005, Emily also helped to introduce specialised domestic violence courts - a programme in place to bring domestic abuse perpetrators to justice and to improve the safety and welfare of victims.

Speaking about the courts, Emily said:

 Quote

"I trained the Magistrates on domestic abuse, stalking and harassment, repeat victimisation, and the voice of children.

"I gave them some statistics around the point in which the victim comes forward to the police, which is usually around crisis point after they have suffered domestic abuse several times before calling the police or other partner agencies.

While this work has improved the handling of domestic abuse incidents and criminal justice cases within GMP, Emily says there is still so much to do and working in partnership is key to supporting victims, children and families.

She said: "I think with domestic abuse, it's very much a hidden crime. A lot of it takes place behind closed doors, and a lot of it is subtle – controlling and coercive behaviour, restricting money being available, what a person wears and who their friends are. Some people will be subject to domestic abuse and they don’t even know it”

"People don't realise they are in a controlling relationship, and it is often hidden from family and friends. If and when it does unfortunately escalate to violence, that's when it becomes more visible because of injuries or hospital treatment and then people will call the police in their hour of need."

"I have some really close friends who have been subjected to horrendous violent abuse and these are strong and independent women. It just opens your eyes to the fact that domestic abuse affects everybody.

Domestic abuse is one of the highest volume of crime types in Wigan/Leigh and remains a key priority for Emily in her role as Chief Superintendent.

	She added:

 Quote

"We talk about domestic abuse a lot more now and encourage and support those victims, but it can be really difficult for those subjected to abuse. But actually, everybody should be looking out for it and reporting it. If you take smoking now for example, someone who lights up in a pub now is challenged. They're told get out and stop smoking, the social ‘norm’ around this has completely changed, so why aren’t we so forceful around domestic abuse? Why do people stand by and let somebody be assaulted, or know there is something going on in a relationship and do nothing about it?

"For me, there is more that we need to do as a society to say that domestic abuse of any kind is unacceptable. It is about the third party reporting, the neighbour ringing up, the school telling somebody, the best friend knowing that their mate's relationship is not right. Our tolerance levels still need to change a lot in this area."

"I have attended too many homicides that are domestic related and in some of them friends and family knew something was not right but did not speak out.

Domestic abuse can be a lot more than what meets the eye, and can involve threatening behaviour, violence or physical abuse, as well as controlling, psychological, emotional or financial abuse, which can sometimes be harder to recognise and can often go under reported.

	Emily says:

 Quote

"Partnership work is strong in this area but collectively we want to do more.

"In Wigan, we have some really good pro-active work going on with partner agencies and there is a great early intervention service, but I don't think that happens everywhere and there needs to be more investment in early invention, support for children and perpetrator programmes.

"Domestic abuse can affect women, men and children, as victims and as perpetrators.

"On International Women’s Day, think of those loved ones in your life and if they are in an abusive relationship think about what you can do to help, even if that means just speaking to them or making a call to the police or a local support service to see what help is available".

An organised crime group who were found to be in possession of guns that were converted to become lethal weapons have been jailed for a total of 98 years following an investigation as part of a crackdown on gun crime by detectives.

The investigation, codenamed Operation Rivington, was a proactive investigation and part of GMP's aim to tackle the supply and possession of firearms in Greater Manchester. The group, spearheaded by Nathan Godfrey (03/06/91) of Rockley Avenue, Barnsley but originally from Salford, were found to be in possession of Retay firearms - blank firing firearms converted into live-firing lethal guns - with members of the group travelling from across the country to transfer the guns.

Just before 4.30pm on 27 January 2020, the group made a 150-mile trip from Hemel Hempstead when a stolen BMW driven by Sebastian Benjamin (11/08/88) of Long Chaulden, Hemel Hempstead, and a VW Golf driven by Michael McDonagh (29/06/93), of Three Cherry Trees Lane, Hemel Hempstead, with passenger Stuart Nicholson (06/05/89) of Dysart Road, Grantham, pulled up boot-to-boot on Reins Lea Avenue in Oldham and two men got out and exchanged a loaded handgun and put it in the BMW. Armed officers then pursued and stopped the vehicle on Cavendish Street in Asthon-under-Lyne and seized the gun. It was found that the gun was originally a Retay gun which had been converted to into a loaded live-firing handgun with three rounds of ammunition inside, along with eleven rounds of ammunition found in a sock within a carrier bag in the boot.

The exchange took place on Reins Lea Avenue, near the home address of Hedley Brown (05/04/64) of Reins Lea Avenue, Oldham. Just before the vehicles left the scene, Brown was spotted coming out of his home address and approaching the Golf and leaning into the drivers' side. He then walked away, took out a mobile phone, removed a Latex glove and walked into a nearby pub.

Under an hour later, detectives searched Brown's home address and found another firearm - the exact same make and model as the one seized from the boot of the BMW - in the address along with 16 rounds of ammunition. Following enquiries, it was found that Brown had been in communication with Godfrey on WhatsApp over a week before the transfer with images of the gun and ammunition.

The manhunt for the OCG continued and McDonagh was arrested at a service station in Queensway in Hemel Hempstead on 18 March 2020 and Nicholson was arrested outside an address in Grantham, Lincolnshire, on 11 April 2020.

The OCG was led by Nathan Godfrey who was the key link between McDonagh's group and Hedley Brown, organising the exchange and taking significant steps to evade being caught by our officers which included using an unregistered phone, dropping phones after the event, using other defendants to stay at from the transfer and going into hiding for a number of months to evade the police. He was found in a flat in Salford Quays and was in possession of false ID documents in another name and detectives found he had exchanged messages where he'd discussed about escaping the country. Godfrey was found guilty of conspiring to transfer a firearm and sentenced to 14 years on 15 July 2021.

Detectives carried out thorough enquiries on the men's phones and found that Godfrey would speak to Ryan Catton (13/03/1986), of, Ruston Parva, Driffield, North Yorkshire, who would then speak with Lee Nicholson (05/08/91), of Queens Road, Barnsley, who would in turn speak to his cousin Stuart Nicholson. That link would then go the other way so the message was passed back, and then Godfrey would speak to Brown.

-Nathan Godfrey was found guilty of conspiring to transfer a firearm and jailed for 14 years.

-Ryan Catton was found guilty of conspiracy to transfer a firearm and was jailed for 13 years.

-Lee Nicholson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transfer a firearm and was jailed for eight years and 3 months.

-Hedley Brown pleaded guilty to transferring a firearm, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of ammunition with intent to endanger life, possession of Class B with intent to supply and possession of class A and was jailed for 13 years 6 months.

-Michael McDonagh pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life and was jailed for seven years and two months today (7 March 2022) at Minshull Street Crown Court.

-Sebastian Benjamin pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition without a certificate and was jailed for five years.

-Stuart Nicholson pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition without a certificate and was jailed for five years.

-Craig Steenson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply a firearm, conspiracy to supply Cocaine and possession of criminal property (cash) and was jailed for 16 years.

-Cody Hurley pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition without a certificate and was jailed for seven years and six months.

-Peter Locker pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without a certificate, possession with intent to supply Cocaine and possession with intent to supply Cannabis and was jailed for eight years three months.

McDonagh was sentenced today (7 March 2022) at Minshull Street Crown Court. All of the others were previously sentenced in July last year at the same court.

Serious Crime Prevention Orders were also placed on Godfrey, Catton, Nicholson, McDonagh and Steenson meaning there are further restrictions when they are released from prison.

A man from Manchester has been jailed for nine and a half years today (4 March 2022) for rape and sexual activity with a child.

Jordan Lanzon (13/10/1995), of Stanley Road, Manchester, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court this morning for two counts of rape of a child, two counts of sexual activity with a child, and causing/inciting a child to engage in sexual activity as well as an unrelated assault.

He was found guilty of the rape offences following a trial in January 2022 and pleaded guilty to the additional offences in November 2021.

The court heard how Lanzon first made contact with his victim - a 15-year-old girl - via social media in 2019.

He used multiple social media accounts to contact her and lied about his age, claiming he was 17 when in fact he was 23.

The pair met for the first time in Manchester City Centre in November 2019 where they went to the cinema.

The following month they met again and Lanzon informed the victim that he had booked them a hotel room to escape the cold. It was there that Lanzon forcefully had sex with the victim.

The pair continued to communicate following this incident. This led to further contact in December and Lanzon inviting the victim into hotel rooms he had pre-booked. The victim reported feeling scared and forced into having sex multiple times with Lanzon.

During the time that the pair were in contact, Lanzon would ask that the young woman perform sexual acts over the videos calls and via texts.

The incident was reported to police in April 2020 and Lanzon was subsequently arrested. During the interview he denied knowing the victim. However, further evidence from his mobile phone confirmed the pair's relationship and he later admitted to being in contact with the victim.

"Sadly, we can't take away the impact that Lanzon's actions will have on the victim and her family's life. However, I want to thank the victim and her family for their unwavering cooperation and I hope that today's sentence acts as some form of justice and help bring some form of closure.

"This kind of offending and abuse is horrendous and I hope today's sentence also sends a stark warning to those who feel that they can commit these offences - from in person or behind a computer screen - that we will do all in our power to seek prosecution.

"I would encourage anyone affected by this case to contact police, or our partners, to report any abuse or exploitation so that the relevant authorities can act on it."

GMP volunteer group – the Scambusters, a group made up of mainly older and retired volunteers who offer peer-to-peer support to those who have been a victim of fraud, have created a new scheme aimed at engaging with elderly members of the community.

The scheme will see a member of the Scambusters team delivering a presentation to residents at care homes and independent living accommodation across Greater Manchester, arming them with knowledge on the latest scams and sharing key advice on how to avoid falling for them.

The Scambusters are part of GMP's Cyber and Economic Awareness Service (CECAS) which was launched in 2017 and is dedicated to providing prevention and awareness information to the public and safeguarding victims. Those over 65 are the group most commonly referred to CECAS for support so it is hoped that the new scheme will allow GMP to further target those pockets of the community more effectively.

Nearly 400 people have attended 31 presentations since September 2021, with even more residents being reached through the crime prevention material that the Scambusters provide to the homes.
"Fraud can have a real lasting impact on victims, both financially and emotionally. In GMP, we are committed to lowering the number of people who fall victims to scams. One way we can do this, is by making sharing up-to-date fraud information and ensuring that people in Greater Manchester know how to spot a scam, how to protect themselves and how to report it.

"Anyone can fall victim to a scam, which is why our teams are dedicated to using a variety of channels to engage with the public in Greater Manchester. This includes regular posts on our @gmpfraud Twitter account, leaflets shared in food banks and posters in local supermarkets. Unfortunately, older people are more likely to be targeted by fraudsters, so I hope that this new scheme is another way that we can share our scam busting messages and help stop these abhorrent crimes."
