When complete in May 2023 it will be the largest Net Zero 'Green Wall' in Europe and it is being constructed by Bowmer + Kirkland right here on the corner of Irwell and Stanley Street in our very own City of Salford.
The English Cities Fund has invested £36m in the construction of the ground-breaking 12-storey block which will provide 115,00 sq ft of useable floorspace.
The building aims to break new ground in sustainable development as the EFC aim for a 5.5 Star NABERS rating which would mean it is in a league of its own within the UK if achieved.
It has been designed with Net Zero in mind and will make use of a range of innovative technologies and approaches to achieve its ambitious goals.
A few of the technologies to be employed are:
Enhanced, demand-controlled ventilation.
CO2 monitoring throughout the building.
An array of Solar Panels.
Air source heat pumps & a total ban on fossil fuel usage within the building.
'Eden' as it has been named, will add to its sustainability credentials by the addition of a striking 'Living' facade, the largest in Europe.
The 43,000 sq ft exterior wall will be covered with an array of plants, bird boxes and insect hotels, providing a habitat for birds and pollinators. The lavish greenery will also function as a barrier to the elements and will increase the buildings thermal performance as a result.
An additional bonus will be that the wall will be completely self sufficient, requiring minimal maintenance.
The project is slated for completion in May 2023 and will be a welcome sight amongst the otherwise dull and dreary office blocks which festoon the area.
