Discount supermarket chain Lidl is launching a bid to overturn a council planning decision which previously rejected its plans for a store on the corner of Littleton Road and Cromwell Road.
Salford Council refused the scheme which would have seen a 23,500 sq ft store built back in July 2021, citing a failure to contribute positively towards local identity and distinctiveness. A similar store was allowed by planners to be constructed on the former Mocha Parade in Lower Broughton, which has been well received by the local community after opening in February 2022.
The store would have been built in close proximity to Castle Irwell where Salboy acquired land from the University of Salford to build a new homes development upon.
At the time the council said the store would, “weaken the positive and high-quality urban design attributes of the emerging [Castle Irwell] neighbourhood”.
