A new Lidl store has opened its doors for the first time this morning, built upon the former site of Mocha Parade in Lower Broughton.
As expected it has been busy all day with people streaming in to check out the popular middle isle bargains. I myself grabbed one or two.
The low cost super-market chain is the fastest growing in the country and was signed up by Salford City Council as a preferred retailer partner.
The former shopping centre which the new store replaces, was built in the 60's and at the time was considered to be state of the art, however, over the years it had fallen into decline and quickly came to be considered to be one of the biggest eyesores in the city.
The new super-market has provided around 40 new jobs for the area as well as provided a valuable local resource fo the area.
It’s part of a long-term plan to revitalise the whole Broughton area, which has seen considerable investment in new homes, schools and parks over the last few years. The council is seeking to create a thriving, vibrant local shopping centre for the community.
