Salford Council have passed plans for developers Salboy to go ahead with their first phase plans to redevelop the former student village off Cromwell Road and Littleton Road.
The development is close to the site of the former racecourse which has recently been developed as a protective flood basin and wildlife and waterfowl oasis within the city.
The new development will see 157 homes built across four plots on land acquired by the company from the University of Salford in November 2015.
The project will see a mix of two - three and four bedroom homes built at first with two additional phases adding a further 110 and then 233 homes at a later date if further plans are given the green light.
There is also talk of a possible school on the site.

“Getting detailed planning on the first phase of new homes at Castle Irwell means we can now push on and turn this brownfield site into a new community of contemporary high- quality housing with lots of green open space.
“We will be revealing more details shortly with a view to launching sales next month and the first homes will be completed by mid-2021.”
