Salford City Council has now been accredited with a silver award for its commitment to supporting defence services within its origination and the wider armed forces community.

The award recognises the council for ‘going the extra mile and turning written pledges into concrete action.’

The local authority is also praised for acknowledging the contribution serving personnel, veterans, cadet force adult volunteers and their families make to the country – and making sure they are not disadvantaged by their service.

The silver award follows City Mayor Paul Dennett picking up the bronze award In March from the Naval Regional Commander for Northern England and Isle of Man, on-board HMS Prince of Wales at Royal Albert dock in Liverpool.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said:

“At the local authority we want to acknowledge the service by the armed forces community and the issues that face them. By working together, we can make sure they get the recognition they quite rightly deserve.”

In October 2013, Salford City Council with members of the armed forces, together with a number of partners signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant.

Salford City Council has a dedicated housing support services for members of the armed forces community to help with any housing/welfare issues.

Councillors Margaret Morris and Barry Warner, both former members of the armed forces, are veterans champions for the city.

    Councillor Morris said:
