ANGELS, ARCHERS, HATS AND FAIRIES – IT’S THE BIG DAY OUT!

The free event also includes a chance to make your own bird feeder, bunting or hat from recycled materials workshops, followed by a hat fashion parade, a chance to step back in time to see 12^th century crafts and combat and see a display of flowers and plants by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Salford Angels Women’s Institute will launch their new recipe book at as well as running the tea tent on site and Est 1761 will be promoting their new Bridgewater Canal events for autumn and winter with an I Spy wildlife workshop where children can make their own binoculars.

The Big Day out is organised by Salford City Council working with partners from across the city and takes place on the lawns outside the Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton from11am to 4pm.

Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety, said: “Salford’s Big Day Out is designed to celebrate our city and local communities and offer families a free day of fun. We’ve got a fabulous programme lined up this year with music, birds of prey, competitions and a fabulous range of food and drink.”

Historia Normannis, a 12 century re-enactment group will be bringing history to life with coin hammering, archery, combat displays, cooking and an armoury while a trio from the BBC Philharmonic will run three interactive musical workshops for young children.

There will be a chance to meet fairies roaming the site and enjoy face painting, crafts, birds of prey, a who’s the baby competition and cake raffle in aid of Salford Birth Centre and a chance to meet your local councillors.

Event sponsor West Way Nissan will be showcasing a range of vehicles including the all electric Leaf in the big vehicle zone which will also feature a digger, fire engine and a vintage double decker bus. Partner sponsors Campanile Hotels will be holding a guess the number of balloons in a car competition and the Holiday Inn Manchester West is offering the chance to win a party for the fastest hotel bed maker in town.

And there’s a range of fabulous food and drink on site from paella to pie and mash, American style hotdogs, cocktails, cakes and bakes from the WI, chimney cakes, BBQ, churros, wood oven pizzas and a beer bar featuring their new Salford Pale Ale from Eccles-based First Chop Brewery.

There’s free parking close to the site and it’s easily reached by bus or train.
