In addition to sandwiches, cakes and scones, visitors will be treated to stories about the charter which gave the city the right to hold markets, the history of Salford Civic centre, the role of the sergeant at arms and the mace that all mayors have.

Councillor Peter Connor will also show off some of the more unusual items which have been presented to the city including gold and silver keys which unlock very unusual buildings and why famous local painter Harold Riley called his artwork ‘mimics.’

“It’s a unique chance to go behind the scenes at Salford City Council and  hear some of our history and see some of the many items donated to the city over the years. Plus it’s raising money to support Salford groups who are working with local people in need.”

Money raised from the afternoon teas will go to the Ceremonial Mayor’s annual charity appeal which this year include local mental health, homelessness and children’s cancer research charities.

The event is part of Salford’s Food and Drink Fortnight which this year is celebrating local food heroes – people or businesses which go the extra mile to provide delicious food and drink in the city.

There are two sessions for the charity afternoon tea at 12.30pm to 2pm and 2.30pm to 4pm at Salford Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton.  Tickets must be booked in advance and cost £10 per person. Please contact michelle.lindsay@salford.gov.uk or call 0161 7933618 and say which sitting you prefer.

There is free parking on site and easy access by public transport.
