Greater Manchesters entire MetroLink Tram network has ground to a halt this afternoon after what is being described as a massive communications failure.
Trams are currently unable to run on any line and passengers have been forced to take replacement busses and trains, or find alternative travel.
It is unclear when the issue will be resolved or how long the line closures will last. It is not thought to be related to recent ransomeware attacks that affected the NHS earlier in the week.
A spokesperson for Metrolink said..
QuoteThe drivers can still communicate with the control room. There is no issue with that, everything can be communicated back and forth.
Visibility is the difficulty in terms actually getting people around. They are not able to see the position and location of the trams from the control room so for safety reasons they wouldn’t want them driving round the system.
It is a bit frustrating but they are trying to resolve it as soon as possible.
There are no problems with anybody being stuck on trams or between stops, everybody has got off, they are just waiting for further information.
If staff from MetroLink are reading this, have you tried turning it off and on again?
