The international day on August 12 celebrates the contribution young people make to their community and is a chance for young people to organise events for each other and local residents. It will be celebrated in Salford mainly from Monday, August 6 to Friday, August 10 with some events taking place later in the month and into September.

This year’s most unusual event has been organised by the Eccles LGBT group who have invited in a local drag queen to talk about drag history and culture in Greater Manchester, demonstrate skills in make-up and clothing and give a performance.

Other groups will showcase their voluntary work in their community, projects on hate crime, pollution and environmental concerns and organise family fun days with sports, games and barbeques.

Councillor Lisa Stone, lead member for children’s and young people’s services, said:

“We have some fabulous young people in Salford who really give back to the city and Youth Day is a great chance to celebrate that and say thanks for all they do.

“The whole event is led by young people who plan and deliver a range of events and then organise a celebration party to round it all off.”
