On International Women’s Day 8th March shoppers at Swinton Asda were able to find out the latest news for women born in the 1950s about their case for compensation for changes to their state pension age.

Members of the Salford and Eccles Women Against State Pension Injustice (WASPI) Campaign ran an information stand and gave out leaflets and flowers.

    Campaign Co-ordinator Judith Robertson, explained:

“We celebrated International Women’s Day by making sure as many 1950s women as possible understood how they are affected by a recent ruling by the Ombudsman,

“We had a very productive day meeting lots of enthusiastic supporters. We recruited new members and made sure that everyone we chatted to was up to date with our current position.

“The Ombudsman has ruled that it was maladministration when 1950s-born women were not given proper notice that we would have to wait several years longer to get our State Pension. A cross-party committee of MPs has already recommended we get compensation at the highest level. Some 5,000 women in our area are affected by this ruling and need to understand what is happening.”

“I was very relieved to hear the latest about our situation,” said Patricia Daniels from Salford. “I’m a 1950s women.  I had heard something was going on but didn’t know the details. I’ve joined the local WASPI group now so I will keep up to date with developments.”
