Salford Council and Greater Manchester Police have given warnings after a sickening scammer contacted a recently bereaved family purporting to be from the Council's bereavement services.
The male caller then shockingly stated that payment for an upcoming funeral had been declined and that the family would have to make a card payment via the phone for their loved ones burial or it would be cancelled.
Fortunately the family refused the payment and contacted Salford City Council who confirmed it to have been a scam.
Police say that the matter is now under investigation and that similar scams have been increasing since lockdown as more common crimes such as burglaries from homes have reduced.
Both the Police and Council are asking members of the public to remain vigilant and report any concerns to GMP or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
Never under any circumstances should you give personal information or payment over the phone unless you are completely sure who you are dealing with at the other end.
