The fully refurbished and modern, freestanding midwifery-led unit in Salford is the only one of its kind in Greater Manchester and will offer women from across the city, the choice to give birth to their baby in a home from home environment, should they be suitable.

Women who have been identified as having a low-risk pregnancy, and who are not expected to require support from a doctor during birth, will be able to give birth at Ingleside.

The centre, which is owned by Salford City Council, has been refurbished with the help of a crowdfunding appeal. Local businesses and members of the public donated over £130,000 to help bring the Victorian mansion back to life.

The service will be run by midwives from Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, who have been providing maternity care in the Salford area for a number of years. This will now provide women in the area with access to their full range of maternity services, which also includes home births or accessing one of the maternity suites at the Princess Anne Maternity Unit, Royal Bolton Hospital.

Set in the beautiful grounds of Oakwood Park, Ingleside is steeped in history. The birth centre itself has four birthing suites each with its own birthing pool. Specialist mood lighting, high definition projectors displaying natural images and sounds and the facility to play your own music are just some of the features that will create a positive and relaxing birthing environment for those women who do not wish to give birth in hospital.

It is intended that the centre will become a community hub to women and their families for the whole area, offering antenatal and postnatal clinics and classes, sessions on hypnobirthing, infant feeding support, a range of complementary therapies and much more.

Sue Ainsworth, Head of Midwifery for Bolton NHS Foundation Trust said:

“We’re so excited to now be able to offer Ingleside as a place of birth for expectant mothers in the city. Where a woman chooses to have her baby is so important to her and her family, and being able to provide our families with wider choices is at the heart of what we do.

“So much work has gone into making Ingleside the centre that we all hoped for, and it’s been a pleasure to work with our partners at Salford City Council and Salford CCG to see it come to fruition.

“Please do keep in touch with our updates on Facebook, and we look forward to welcoming you when we open at Easter.”

Councillor Gina Reynolds, lead member for adult services, health and wellbeing, Salford City Council, said:

“People are very proud of coming from Salford and have rallied behind this new centre which will offer pioneering care for families.

I’m delighted we are now able to offer the option of midwife-led births in our city and bring a historic Salford building back to life at the same time.”

Dr Tom Tasker, chair of Salford Clinical Commissioning Group said:

“To have Salford as home to Greater Manchester’s only freestanding midwifery-led unit is a real landmark moment for the city, being able to provide women with the widest choice of maternity services.

“To have that unit also become a community hub so women and their families get access to a wide range of support and activities during pregnancy and beyond is also a really exciting opportunity and we’re looking forward to Ingleside becoming a vital community asset for many years to come.”

Women who would like to book to give birth at Ingleside should discuss this with their midwife at one of their antenatal appointments. Their midwife will be able to discuss their options with them and provide more information about the centre.

Women can also contact Ingleside@boltonft.nhs.uk or follow the centre on Facebook @InglesideSalford for updates and information.

Ingleside will be available for women to give birth 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The centre will be open to the community between 8.30am-4.30pm Monday-Friday.
