Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! Have I got your attention? good then I shall begin.
We have all had a few miserable years of late and so it has been decided that to cheer us all up, the Great Eccles Cake Bake Off will take place on Sunday 18th September this year, a competition open to all ages and standards and held in the centre of Eccles at The Eccles Cross... no, not the Wetherspoons pub! the ancient monument.
The history of Eccles Cakes has been long documented with a mention of them as far back in 1769 by that domestic goddess, Elizabeth Raffald, but more famously, when made by James Birch at his bakery on Church Street in Eccles more than 200 years ago, making the Eccles Cake one of the town’s most famous exports.
There will be three different rounds of competition, with prizes for each, with the best Eccles Cakes being chosen by our expert panel of judges and general cake lovers, hopefully me.
There will also be stalls for the competitors, set up for people to come along and try some of the Eccles Cakes on offer.
