At about 3.30am on 18 July, police officers on patrol witnessed a vehicle collide with the Blackfriars Pub on Blackfriars Road, Salford, and subsequently catch fire.
The front door of the historic building which was due to reopen this month was left damaged.
Two male casualties were rescued from the vehicle by police officers, who then tried to put out the fire.
NWAS and GMFRS also attended and the two men were taken to hospital where one of the men, the passenger aged 23, has sadly died despite the best efforts of the emergency services.
The driver, also 23, remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
There is a scene in place and an investigation by GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is under way.
