Shortly after 2.30pm police were called to a property on Liverpool Road to a report of concern for the welfare of a man.
Emergency services attended but sadly the man died.
There were reports by members of the public on social media that he had been involved in a stabbing but this has been dismissed by GMP.
Enquiries are ongoing.
