“Once again we are getting ready to join in with this year’s Manchester Pride Festival celebrations and are looking forward to welcoming visitors into our fantastic city.
“To mark the occasion we will be flying the rainbow flag outside our Force Headquarters to show our support. The flag will be raised by the creator of the ‘Bobby Dazzler’ - the sparkling customised police helmet which made its first appearance at Pride last year.
“As with each year we, alongside colleagues from neighbouring forces, will be leading the parade with the rainbow police car taking centre stage.
“I understand that Manchester people will be horrified by the recent events in Barcelona and our thoughts are with everyone affected.
“Whilst there is no specific intelligence of any threat to the LGBT community, or to Greater Manchester, officers will continue to work closely with members of the LGBT community, including independent advisors, local partners and the night-time economy, to offer on-going security advice and additional reassurance.
“We have reviewed our policing plans for the Manchester Pride Festival and have worked closely with the organisers. We are increasing our police patrols in key areas to offer reassurance, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.
“Please remain vigilant at all times, and report anything suspicious that causes you concern to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 or 999 in an emergency.”
Recent terror attacks have demonstrated the necessity for the public to be aware of the police’s Run, Hide, Tellmessaging, while specialist advice for companies operating in crowded places -split into different sectors such as major events, sport stadia, visitor attractions, bars, theatres and shopping centres- was also refreshed earlier this year.
Key advice for anyone would be, know the advice to keep yourself safe don't leave it to someone else to raise concerns around suspicious activity - ACT yourself to report it to police or security staff.
Do not hesitate for a minute or think you might be wasting police time. If something doesn't look right, tell someone.
Key advice for anyone attending an event this summer
· Please arrive early for extra security measures. This will help prevent delays in getting into the event.
· Be patient with security checks and help the staff to help you. We know it is inconvenient but they are there to keep you safe.
· It is essential that you do not bring unnecessary items to the event; this will help to speed up searches and your entry to the event.
· If you spot someone acting suspiciously, report it to police or to security staff immediately: don't leave it to someone else. #ActionCountersTerrorism
· In an emergency, if you think there is an immediate risk, always call 999 and look around you for help from staff - especially those with radios who can raise the alarm quickly.
· Don't leave bags unattended or anywhere they could cause a security scare. And never agree to look after anyone else's bags, no matter how plausible their story.
· If there is an incident, listen to staff and any announcements. Organisers will have emergency plans to help you keep safe.
· Remember, the chance of being caught in a terrorism incident is small. But if it happens - Run, Hide, Tellgov.uk/ACT
