Manchester families are being invited to step into the realms of their imagination as Tangled Dance Company’s professional dancers and musicians unlock the frozen secrets of Salford’s Ordsall Hall and its enthralling world of wizards.
Set in a magical wizarding world, the spellbinding promenade dance performance focuses on the world of the ‘Tailors of Illusion’, following the Tailors, as they move from room to room in the venue, working their magic to untangle the growing roots of greed and restore the warmth of Christmas.
Each year at Christmas one of the Tailors is called to the Sirens of Yore(Choir) to be tested. Siblings Greta and Kristoff are both young Tailors and this Christmas Greta has been selected to visit the Sirens. She must collect one strand of each of their voices, to produce a magical cloak. Greta has to resist the urge to look into the Sirens’ eyes or a freezing curse will befall her and all in the land. However, Greta cannot resist and she looks into their eyes, then steals all their voices. Her heart turns to ice, and she is poisoned with such greed and hate that she goes on to rule the land and its people very harshly. Can Kristoff steal back the powerful voices and find a way to break the spell that has been cast on his sister?
Says Frosted By Magic artistic director and choreographer, Amy Hallam:
Quote“We’re delighted to be bringing the Frosted by Magic production to Ordsall Hall for the first time. The performance brings melody and movement, musicians and dancers together with Ordsall Hall adds an enchanting dimension to the Tailors’ story . The show promises to be an unforgettable festive spectacle of magic and is perfect for all the family, young and old.”
The Frosted by Magic production has been performed in previous years at Heaton Park, with feedback from audience members including:
Quote“What an enchanting performance, my kids were captivated all the way through and my mum (aged 70) thought it was brilliant. There’s not many shows that we can all enjoy together but this was definitely one! We will definitely be back” and “It was magical, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I think they should do more stuff like this in stately homes because everyone should get a chance to see something like this.”
This all-Manchester show will see Tangled Dance accompanied by live classical musicians from MAPAS, Crumpsall Concert Band, Blackley Band, and will feature dance students from Salford University, Oldham College and Salford City College.
Tickets cost £10 for adults and £8 for children and are now available on Skiddle and in person at Ordsall Hall. Performances run at 2.30pm, 4.30pm and 6.30pm on Saturdays and at 4.30pm, 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Sundays. Each performance lasts approximately an hour.
Tangled Dance Company was founded in 2013 by Manchester choreographer and dance artist, Amy Hallam. Amy graduated from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2012 and now works as a freelance dance artist touring internationally with companies such as Wired Aerial Theatre, alongside running Tangled. In February 2014 Tangled received a Research and Development residency with Dance Manchester exploring initial ideas for a project and Amy’s first production ‘Once Upon A Twisted Tale’ was born and toured venues and festivals throughout the North West since then; the success of these performances inspired her to continue creating work that engages the public.
Since then, Tangled has performed at such festivals as Ignite Imaginations - Sheffield Light Night, Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival and Manchester's Urban Moves International Dance Festival. The company has continued to expand, creating more and larger scale site specific productions and developed a unique strand of Dance Photography Workshops. Tangled has received funding from Arts Council England to support their projects since 2016 and Frosted by Magic is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
A real family affair, Amy works alongside mum Vicky Eccleston, a professional costume and props designer, who creates unique portable sets for all of Tangled’s productions.
Tangled Dance Company is committed to making contemporary dance accessible to the public and creating opportunities for Manchester and Northern based artists to work in the North of England.
