Update: 6:55pm,  the road has now been reopened to traffic in both directions but there are long tailbacks and things are moving slowly.

We are told that the injured woman has now been taken to hospital to be treated via ambulance.

Traffic is currently disrupted along Chapel Street after a collision between a female pedestrian and what appears to be a bicycle which happened during the rush hour at around 5:25 pm.

The outbound carriageway was initially closed to traffic between Oldfield Road and Trinity Way with diversions in place but due to the build up of traffic, both sides of the carriageway have now been closed off and the area is gridlocked.

Motorists are being advised to use alternative routes until the incident is resolved.

Deb Clemans, who was on a bus close-by, witnessed the incident and has told us that the woman was still lay in the road being treated by first response paramedics who have managed to push through the traffic to come to her aid.

The driver of a number 34 bus went to the woman's aid and stayed with her until the paramedics arrived.

We are also being told that traffic has come to a standstill on the opposite carriageway due to people slowing down to rubber-neck, this apparently hampered the ambulance getting to the scene but they finally managed to push through the traffic and are now treating with her.

We will update this as we get more information.
