Shortly after 2.20am on Thursday 31 May 2018, police and the fire service were called to a fire at a house at the junction of Pevensey Road and Duchy Road.

On attendance and further investigation, it was discovered that a car in the garage had been deliberately set alight.

The fire had then spread to the house.

Fortunately, there were no injuries but an 88-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman were inside the house.

A 56-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson to endanger life, he has since been released under investigation.

“Thankfully there were no injuries, but this could easily have been so much worse.

“We are appealing for anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously between 1am and 2pm on Thursday 31 May 2018 around the Pevensey Road and Duchy Road junction to get in touch as soon as possible.

“We hope that there are people out there who may be able to help us answer the questions that we and the victims have.”
