Police were called out after reports of a large disturbance involving a group of youths acting anti-socially close to the food court at Manchester's Arndale this evening.
Witnesses have described up to 100 youths acting aggressively towards security staff at the Arndale.
Soon after a large police presence descended on the area and the food court was evacuated as a precaution, so as to ensure the safety of the public who had become caught up in the incident.
A spokesperson for Manchester Arndale issued the following statement.
Quote
"We have been supporting police in relation to an incident involving a large number of individuals at Manchester Arndale. The safety of our shoppers and staff is always our first priority."
Two 16-year-old boys have now been arrested on suspicion of public order offences.
Police officers have safely dispersed the remainder of the large group of youths and the food court has now been reopened to the public.
Pat Carney of Manchester City Council said,
Quote
"The reports we’ve had is that there was a disturbance in the food court.
We have had reports that gas canisters were let off and that’s why people were panicking and screaming.
We will be working closely with Greater Manchester Police to make sure charges are being brought.
It is scandalous behaviour.
We have enough security scares in Manchester without this kind of behaviour."
