Police officers from Swinton Neighbourhood Team executed a search warrant upon a premises on Deans Road, during which they discovered the building had been converted into a Cannabis farm with a number of plants in various stages of growth.

The sealed off room had been kitted out with lamps which artificially mimic the suns rays as well as a hydroponic systems for watering. Fans dotted around the room helped to evenly regulate the temperature and humidity.

As a result of the warrant, two people have been arrested pending further enquiries.

In recent years a number of high profile MP's have proposed that the UK should follow in California’s footsteps and legalise cannabis allowing for proper regulation.

Currently cannabis is designated as a Class B drug in the UK and anyone caught with it could face up to five years in prison.

However, there has been a shift in approach towards medicinal cannabis products, which can now be legally prescribed to some patients.

Campaigners say it is inevitable that the drug will be legalised in the UK within the next 5 to 10 years.

However, the government says it "has no intention of changing the law" when it comes to legalisation.

    A Home Office spokesman said:

    Quote

"The legalisation of these substances would not eliminate the crime committed by the illicit trade, nor would it address the harms associated with drug dependence and the misery they can cause to families and society."
