Today, Monday 19 March 2018, police have received a number of reports of threats made to schools across Greater Manchester.
Specialist officers are working to determine the nature of the reports and are speaking directly with the schools and local authorities.
Although it is thought that there is no risk to the public, the police have a duty to take such threats seriously and so they have launched a full investigation.
More than 400 schools and colleges across the country received an email which claimed a bomb had been planted and would be detonated if cash wasn't handed over.
Police forces in other areas of the UK, including, London, Bristol, Liverpool, Bedfordshire and the North East are among those investigating.
The investigation seems to have come from a number of schools across the UK reporting that they had been sent what appears to be a fake bomb threat email, asking for money.
Assistant Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine, said:
Quote“I understand that parents and the general public will be very concerned and I want to assure you that we are working closely with all of the schools to ensure the safety of pupils and staff.
“We are carrying out extensive enquiries to understand the full circumstances and although there is not currently believed to be any direct threat, as with any report of this nature, they are all being thoroughly investigated.
“This is an ongoing incident and we will provide updates as soon as we can.”
