A huge search was carried out on a stretch of the the River Irwell close to Peel Park after reports that 'people' were seen entering the water.
Emergency services were deployed to Meadow Road, which lies beside the River Irwell at around 10pm this evening (14th Feb).
Reportedly an inflatable search boat was seen, ready to be deployed into the water.
Search teams also used flashlights and drones to scour the area with the forces helicopter said to be assisting.
There have been claims elsewhere in the media that the incident follows a police chase but this is unconfirmed by police at this time.
The search has since been scaled down and we are awaiting a response from Greater Manchester Police.
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said:

“Just after 10pm on Tuesday 14 February, fire crews were called to assist with an incident near Peel Park in Salford following a report of people entering the nearby river.
“Three fire engines from Phillips Park, Broughton and Eccles, as well as the water unit from Eccles and the technical rescue unit from Ashton, quickly attended the incident.
“Firefighters remain at the scene alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police.”
