Officers from the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident; however at this time it is believed that this was a tragic accident and that there are no suspicious circumstances.

Police Sergeant Brian Orr of the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:

“This was a heart-breaking incident involving a young boy which has understandably left his family distraught and the thoughts of everyone in the SCIU are with them at this terrible time.

“At the moment this appears to have been a truly tragic accident and not a suspicious incident; however we have launched an investigation to establish a full understanding of exactly what happened.

“I would ask that anybody who witnessed the collision to please contact police.”

23:00 We are being told by police that a young boy had tragically died at the scene.

22:55 Armed police were first to respond as they were closest to the incident and in the area at the time.

22:40 Police have said that they are responding to a road traffic accident involving a vehicle hitting a child.

Reports came in of a huge police presence and possibly armed officers at the IBIS Hotel on Trafford Road, Salford.

Up to 15 police units and reportedly 3 ambulances have been called to the scene, where one witness described a woman covered in blood as well as screams heard in the area.

It has now been established that a young child was tragically hit by a vehicle on the car park to the rear of the building, sadly he has died at the scene.

Police say that the armed officers were there as they were closest to the incident and first to respond.

Anybody with information should contact the SCIU on 0161 856 4741 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go to the family at this time.
