Residents on Crowther Avenue in Ordsall were awoken by an explosion just after 11:30pm on Monday 30th Dec.
The bomb squad was called in after an explosion tore a hole in the roof of a grey car, not far from the scene of another explosion on Robert Hall Street earlier this month in which police say an industrial firework was involved.
GMP have not yet disclosed the cause of the explosion but residents in 20 homes within the immediate vicinity were evacuated to a nearby hotel as a precaution but have since returned to their houses. No injuries have been reported.
