A team of seven athletes aged 13-to-15 from the City of Salford Synchronised Swim Team has been crowned the best in the UK.
The team, coached by Jess Fletcher won the National Youth Team gold award at the Artistic Swimming National Age Group Championships earlier this Spring.
This is the first time the group, which trains at Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre has won a team gold medal at championship level, which sees around 130 swimmers attending to compete over two days every year.
The team had to show five hybrids and three acrobatic movements throughout their routine and were marked on execution, artistic impression and difficulty which resulted in a combined score of 119.7415 - almost 5 full points ahead of the rest of the competitors.
The winning synchro team are Sophie Flemming (14), Frankie Derbyshire (14), Lotti Horsman (14), Ailsa Fox (15), Lena Ramanah-Beck (13), Neve Lambert (14) and Grace Jenkins (14) all from Salford.
The team picked up another medal at the leading annual swimming event which was bronze in the National Youth Duet (for ages 13-15). In the Solo category, Lena Ramanah-Beck finished 5th and Sophie Flemming finished 10th out of 127 swimmers.
In the 12-and-under Duet event, the team’s youngest swimmers, Abbie Pullen, Zosia Holyniewska and reserve athlete Eleanor Burlinson, all aged 12, finished in 6th place and this marks the first time in six years’ that there has been Salford representation in this event.
