They have been helping Salfordian's look up to the wonders of the universe for decades, I should know as I was once a member of the S.A.S. and hold fond memories of peering through the scope as a child.
In recent years the old scope has been upgraded and it's mirror reground and silvered, in fact it is in better condition today than when it was manufactured.
However, I also remember the observatory having no toilet facilities. Not a problem for a youngster in need of a quick pee as it is surrounded by convenient bushes and foliage, but for the ladies and those with disabilities, it is a huge problem should they get caught short.
Now, SALFORD ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY is fundraising and every donation will help this cherished Salford Society to finally have some proper facilities.
Salford Astronomical Society was established in 1964 and in 1971 the Observatory was built on Chaseley Fields in Salford, but when it was built the water and drainage were never installed.
The society is planning to update the facilities on offer at Chaseley Fields by installing water and drainage so that they have toilets available for visitors.
Their ambition is to become a valued addition to the local community (they already are), opening the observatory up to schools and groups such as scouts.
The society already has regular well attended open evenings, allowing the people of Salford to pop along and look at such sights as the Moon, Mars and Uranus. It also holds monthly open lectures which are always well received by members and the public.
So please help if you can, spend a penny so that they can spend a penny.
